What happened in the July 24 PSN outage?
The July 24 outage affected multiple PlayStation Network categories rather than a single game or feature. Reports described problems across PS5, PS4, PS3, PS Vita, web services, and other PlayStation platforms, including:
- Signing in to PlayStation Network accounts
- Launching or connecting to online games
- Friends, trophies, challenges, and other social features
- Browsing, purchasing, downloading, or redeeming content from the PlayStation Store
- PlayStation Video and PlayStation Direct services
The timing made the incident especially visible because it coincided with the start of the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls open beta. Sony’s status information and contemporary reports did not establish a confirmed technical cause. Claims linking the outage to a PS5 system update, cloud infrastructure, hacking, or maintenance remained speculation.

What does a PSN outage affect?
PSN is a collection of services, so an outage may be partial. Sony separates its status information into Account Management, Gaming and Social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct.
- Account Management: Sign-in, account changes, and some license-related functions may fail.
- Gaming and Social: Multiplayer, friends lists, trophies, challenges, and network-dependent game features may be unavailable.
- PlayStation Store: Purchases, downloads, browsing, and voucher redemption may be interrupted.
- Digital games: A console may be unable to validate ownership unless the account or console was previously authorized for offline play.
A green status page does not guarantee that every individual game, account, region, internet provider, or backend feature is working normally.

Sometimes. Disc-based games that do not require an internet connection or account authentication are the most likely to work. Digital games are more complicated: licensing checks and offline authorization can still matter, even for a primarily single-player title.

On PS5, Sony calls the relevant setting Console Sharing and Offline Play. On PS4, the comparable account setting is the console designated as the account’s primary PS4. These settings are preventative. Enabling them during an outage may not immediately fix a license problem if the console was not previously authorized.
Always-online games, cloud streaming, cloud saves, online progression, leaderboards, and multiplayer will generally remain unavailable when their required servers cannot be reached. Sony’s PlayStation Network terms explain the relevant offline-play and licensing distinctions.
Is the problem PSN, your console, your ISP, or the game?
- Check Sony’s status page. Red or degraded categories point toward a service-side problem.
- Check the game publisher. If only one title is failing while PSN is green, look for that game’s server-status notice or official social account.
- Test other PSN features. Try Account Management, the Store, friends, and another online game.
- Test your network. Check another internet-connected device on the same connection.
- Compare user reports. An outage tracker can show whether reports are widespread, but it cannot prove the cause.
If only one account is affected, or the console displays a credential, suspension, or timeout error, treat it as a separate issue rather than assuming PSN is down.

What to do during an outage
- Wait if Sony has marked a broad service disruption.
- Do not repeatedly change DNS settings, reset the router, delete saved data, rebuild the database, or factory-reset the console.
- Do not repeatedly retry purchases or downloads while Store services are unstable.
- Try an already-authorized offline game, provided it does not require online authentication.
- Save screenshots and error codes if the problem continues after recovery.
Buying PlayStation Plus, a VPN, third-party DNS service, router, or new console will not repair a Sony-side outage. PlayStation Plus requirements also vary by game and do not turn an unavailable PSN service back on.

What to do after Sony reports recovery
- Restart the console once.
- Sign in and test Account Management.
- Check the Store separately from multiplayer.
- Confirm that downloads, licenses, trophies, and cloud features are behaving normally.
- Check the individual game’s servers if one title still fails.
- Use Sony’s PS5 error-code guide or the broader PlayStation error-code index.
Useful error-code distinctions
Codes do not all indicate an outage. For example, CE-112839-4 indicates a connection error with PSN; NW-102636-8 indicates a connection timeout; and WS-116329-2 indicates that the sign-in ID or password does not match. Codes such as WS-116331-5 and WS-116367-4 may indicate account or console suspension. Follow the instructions for the exact code rather than applying a generic outage fix.
For persistent problems after Sony’s status page returns to normal, use the official PlayStation Support hub.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The latest major documented PSN outage was on July 24, 2026, and service was later restored. The last supplied U.S. status check, recorded August 18, showed all listed services operational. Check Sony’s live status page first, distinguish PSN problems from game or account errors, and avoid destructive troubleshooting during a confirmed outage.
