PSN was down during a PlayStation Network outage on March 21–22, 2026, when Gaming & Social problems affected game launches, apps, and network features. PlayStation later showed services restored, but some players still had trouble. At the August 17, 2026 research timestamp, the official status page showed all services online.
The weekend incident was a mixed recovery rather than a universal, simultaneous failure and repair. Sony did not confirm a public cause in the available reporting, so the safest way to diagnose a remaining PS5 problem is to separate a platform outage from a local console or household-network issue.

Key takeaways
- The PSN outage covered here happened on March 21–22, 2026, and does not show that PlayStation Network is down on August 17, 2026.
- PlayStation identified Gaming & Social as the affected service category during the weekend incident.
- Recovery was uneven: some players regained access while others still saw sign-in, game-launch, or network-feature problems.
- Sony did not confirm a public cause for the March outage, so claims about hacking, maintenance, or an update are unverified.
- A router restart or wired connection can help with a local problem, but no home-network change can repair a Sony-side outage.
Is PSN down right now?
The outage in this report happened over March 21–22, 2026. At the research timestamp of August 17, 2026, PlayStation’s official service-status page showed all listed services online, including Account Management, Gaming & Social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct. Individual PS5 or account connection problems can still occur even when the status page is green, so the historical outage should not be treated as proof of a current platform-wide failure. Check the official PlayStation Service Status page for the latest live result.

What happened during the March 21–22 PSN outage?
PlayStation acknowledged problems affecting Gaming & Social during the March 21–22, 2026 incident. Reported symptoms included difficulty launching games, opening apps, and using network features. The official wording reproduced in the incident coverage said: “You might have difficulty launching games, apps or network features. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.” That statement came from the official PlayStation Status page, not from a named Sony executive. TechRadar’s March 22 incident report documented the outage and PlayStation’s status updates.

The recovery was not an instant return to identical service for every player. The status page later showed services restored, but some users continued reporting connection trouble. TechRadar’s report described partial recovery in which the writer could browse the PlayStation Store, download a game, and launch some content while appearing offline or lacking access to certain online features. That example shows that different PSN components and individual accounts can recover at different times; it is not a guarantee that every player had the same access.
Why were some players still having trouble after PSN showed green?
An all-services-online message indicates that Sony’s monitored services had recovered, but it does not guarantee that every console, account, region, game session, or network path has immediately returned to normal. Residual problems can therefore look like a continuing PSN outage even after the platform status page changes to green.

| Situation | Typical scope | What the status page may show | Best next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform outage | Many users or multiple PSN services | An incident affecting Gaming & Social or another category | Wait for Sony’s recovery updates and retry later |
| Uneven recovery | Some accounts, consoles, games, or features still fail | All services may already appear online | Retry, restart locally, and check whether the failure is limited to one feature |
| Local connection failure | One console, account, or household | All services appear online | Run the PS5 connection test, reset network settings, and restart network equipment |
Sony did not publish a confirmed public cause in the retrieved coverage. The available reporting does not establish that the incident was caused by hacking, a DDoS attack, maintenance, an authentication failure, or a system update. Those explanations should not be presented as fact without a specific official source.

When PlayStation Network is operational but a PS5 still cannot connect, Sony’s recommended troubleshooting sequence is to check service status, reset the console’s network settings, restart the router and modem, try again later, and contact PlayStation Support if the error continues.

- Check PSN status first. Open the PlayStation Service Status page and look for an incident affecting Account Management, Gaming & Social, the Store, or another service you need. If Sony is reporting an outage, local troubleshooting will not restore Sony’s servers.
- Test and reset the PS5 connection. On PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. If the connection test or error page directs you to reset network settings, remove and recreate the relevant network connection.
- Restart the router and modem correctly. Turn off the router and modem, wait five minutes, and turn both devices back on. Sony gives this sequence in its PS5 connection-error guidance. See the official instructions for PS5 error WS-115338-1 and PS5 error NP-103107-2.
- Try again later. If the status page is clear but the problem began during or immediately after a known outage, wait and retry. A green status page and a still-failing console can reflect delayed recovery or a separate local issue.
- Contact PlayStation Support. If the error remains after the status check, network reset, router restart, and another attempt later, use PlayStation’s support workflow for the exact error code.
Can a wired Ethernet connection fix PSN?
A wired Ethernet connection can help determine whether home Wi-Fi is contributing to a PS5 connection problem, but an Ethernet cable cannot fix a platform-wide PlayStation Network outage. If PSN is online and the console works over Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, the result points toward the wireless network, router placement, interference, or configuration. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable for PS5 is therefore a diagnostic option, not an outage remedy.
Can you play PS5 games offline during a PSN outage?
Some PS5 games and features may remain usable offline during a PSN outage, but access depends on the game, how the game was obtained, and whether the required feature depends on Sony’s network. Downloaded games or Store functions may work while sign-in, multiplayer, trophies, social features, account checks, or other online-dependent functions fail.

Physical PS5 game discs are not a universal workaround. A disc-based game may still need an internet connection for multiplayer, updates, authentication, or other features. Community reports about digital games and discs are anecdotal and should not be treated as proof that every physical or downloaded game will work offline. The March incident coverage itself showed that access could vary by service component and game.

Bottom line
PSN was down during the March 21–22, 2026 incident, with Gaming & Social explicitly affected and recovery uneven for some players. The official status page was showing all services online at the August 17, 2026 research timestamp, while Sony had not confirmed the outage’s cause. If a PS5 still will not connect, first check PSN status; then follow Sony’s network-reset and router-restart steps, try again later, and contact support if the problem is limited to your console or account.
