PSSR is Sony’s upscaler for supported PS5 Pro games; FSR is a family of PC technologies whose availability depends on the feature, game, GPU and driver. There is no established universal image-quality winner: the useful comparison is between specific implementations in the same game, at comparable settings and output targets.
What are PSSR and AMD FSR?
PSSR is Sony’s PS5 Pro upscaler
Sony describes PSSR as “an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” It is available in supported PS5 Pro games and, for some existing supported games, through a system-level image-quality enhancement option. Sony reported on February 27, 2026, that PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 titles. That is Sony’s adoption count, not an independent quality measurement, and it does not mean every title uses the upgraded PSSR.
FSR is a family, not one fixed upscaler
AMD’s current branding groups its technologies under FSR “Redstone.” FSR Upscaling, formerly called FSR 4, reconstructs visuals from lower-resolution frames. Other FSR components address frame generation, ray regeneration and radiance caching; those are distinct features, not synonyms for upscaling. A meaningful PC comparison should identify the exact FSR version or component rather than treating “FSR” as a single implementation.
How do the PS5 Pro and PC implementations differ?
Sony says the updated PSSR algorithm and neural network grew out of Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD. Shared development roots do not make PSSR and AMD’s PC implementation interchangeable. PSSR is attached to supported PS5 Pro game implementations or supported system enhancements. On PC, AMD’s feature support varies by game integration, feature, GPU and driver.

One example of platform-specific implementation is 007 First Light: IO Interactive says the PS5 Pro version uses upgraded PSSR, while other platforms use FSR 3.1.5. The same game name across platforms therefore does not establish that the two versions use matching upscalers or revisions.
What versions and hardware are supported?
PS5 Pro: upgraded PSSR and the system option
Sony announced upgraded PSSR in February 2026, describing a new algorithm and neural network approach. Resident Evil Requiem was its first cited example. Sony also announced a broader rollout and an optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” system setting for existing supported PS5 Pro games. PC: AMD FSR support depends on feature and driver
AMD’s current FSR page says ML-based FSR upscaling is available on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. AMD’s supported-games information gives additional Redstone requirements: Redstone titles require Adrenalin 25.12.1 or newer on RX 9000, while Redstone upscaling alone is available on RX 7000 with Adrenalin 26.6.2 or newer. These are feature-specific requirements, not a blanket statement about every FSR version or game. Check AMD’s supported-games list and FSR overview for current compatibility before making a purchase decision.
How to compare image quality fairly
Compare a specific game and rendering setup, not console and PC branding in the abstract. A fair test needs to account for the following:

- Match the game and implementation. Record the game version, platform and exact upscaler version or feature. A patch or platform port may change the implementation.
- Compare equivalent modes and internal resolution. “Quality,” “Balanced” and “Performance” are labels, not guaranteed matching render resolutions. Ubisoft notes that Assassin’s Creed Shadows on PS5 Pro uses different internal resolutions across modes and dynamic resolution scaling. Compare the actual rendering goal where it is known, not mode names alone.
- Record output resolution and frame-rate target. Note what resolution the game outputs and the frame rate it targets. Hardware and other graphics settings also affect results, so a visual difference cannot automatically be credited to the upscaler.
- Inspect difficult detail in motion. Watch vegetation, thin geometry, particles, transparency and ray-traced effects, both while still and during movement. Ubisoft’s technical discussion of Assassin’s Creed Shadows identifies these as challenging reconstruction cases; it is an example from one game, not a universal benchmark. - Look for temporal artifacts. Check for shimmer, flicker, ghosting, errors around newly revealed areas, and detail loss as objects move. Vendor claims about improvements are useful context, but do not substitute for a matched independent comparison.
- Include compatibility in the practical verdict. PSSR requires a PS5 Pro and a supported game or supported system-level enhancement path. FSR availability depends on the particular feature, game, GPU and sometimes driver.
Does PSSR look better than AMD FSR?
The official sources cited here do not establish a controlled PSSR-versus-FSR winner. They do not provide matched tests using the same game builds, settings, rendering resolutions, output targets and hardware. Sony and AMD describe their own technologies, while the developer examples explain particular implementations; none of that supports a universal image-quality ranking.
For a real decision, look for comparisons of the exact game and versions you care about, with equivalent modes and frame-rate goals. If those conditions are not reported, treat the result as a platform comparison rather than evidence that one upscaler is inherently superior.
