If a PS5 Pro game looks soft, smears during camera movement, or shimmers around fine textures, start by comparing the game’s graphics mode with the console’s optional Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting. PSSR behavior varies by game and mode, so there is no single setting that improves every title. If the whole screen flickers or loses signal, troubleshoot the HDMI/display connection separately: that is not the same symptom as an image-reconstruction artifact.
Why PSSR can look blurry, smeary, or shimmery
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s upscaling technology. Sony says it analyzes each frame pixel by pixel. Its upgraded version is intended to reconstruct images more precisely, improve stability in motion, and clarify fine detail—but those aims are not a guarantee that every game, mode, or scene will look better to every viewer. Sony explicitly says results vary by title. Sony’s PS5 Pro page explains that qualification.
In March 2026, Sony announced broad support for upgraded PSSR through a PS5 system software update, describing its goals as enhanced image stability, clearer fine details, and more consistent performance across supported titles. The system option applies only to certain PSSR-compatible games; an individual game’s implementation and graphics mode still matter. A soft image or shimmer confined to one game’s fine textures or motion is therefore best approached as a title- or mode-specific rendering issue, not proof of a console fault. Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement describes the upgrade.
Try these checks in order
- Identify where the symptom occurs. Note whether softness, motion smear, or shimmer appears only in one game or graphics mode, particularly around fine detail or while the camera moves. If the entire display flickers, blanks, or loses signal in menus or other games too, treat it as a broader output or connection problem and use the signal checks below.
- Compare the PSSR enhancement setting. On PS5 Pro, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and compare the same scene with Enhance PSSR Image Quality enabled and disabled. Sony describes the option as an improvement for certain compatible games and cautions that results vary by title. Change only this setting for the comparison; look at the same fine textures and repeat the same camera movement. Sony’s instructions for the setting give its location and scope.
- Check the game’s current support and graphics mode. Review the game’s latest patch notes or in-game graphics options. Different modes in one title need not use the same image-reconstruction path, and the console option does not mean every game or mode will respond identically. Sony’s examples of upgraded-PSSR titles include Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Crimson Desert; that list is not a claim that all modes in those games behave alike. See Sony’s announcement for the title examples.
- Install available system and game updates. Sony’s upgraded PSSR support arrives through system software and title support. Update the console and the affected game, then compare again. An update is worth checking, but unless the game developer identifies a relevant fix, do not assume it will resolve a particular blur or shimmer.
- If the whole display flickers or drops signal, check the connection. Connect the PS5 Pro directly to the TV or display rather than through an intermediary, try another HDMI port or cable, and check the display’s firmware. Sony also says setting Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 may improve picture quality when troubleshooting screen flicker. These are signal checks, not established fixes for PSSR reconstruction artifacts. Follow Sony’s picture and sound troubleshooting for the relevant output guidance.
- Escalate persistent, broad display faults. If flicker, blanking, or signal loss continues beyond one game after the basic connection checks, use PlayStation’s support route. Sony’s cited guidance does not recommend a factory reset or buying new hardware as a first response to PSSR shimmer.
How to compare settings fairly
Use one scene and hold other variables steady. Compare the game’s available graphics modes, then compare the optional PSSR enhancement on and off where applicable. Watch fine-detail clarity, stability during camera movement, how motion looks, and whether the game shows any mode-specific glitches. A setting that looks preferable in one title may not be preferable in another; Sony does not identify one universally best configuration.

Blur, shimmer, and screen flicker are not interchangeable
- Soft detail or motion smear in one game: Compare the game mode and PSSR enhancement setting, then check the game and system updates.
- Shimmer or instability around fine textures: Treat it as a title/mode-specific image issue first; compare the same scene and movement with the optional setting changed.
- Whole-screen flicker, blanking, or signal loss: Check the HDMI path and display output separately. Sony’s advice about cables, ports, firmware, and Video Transfer Rate addresses picture/signal troubleshooting, not a proven cause or cure for PSSR shimmer.
