What are PSSR and AMD FSR?
PSSR: Sony’s PS5 Pro upscaler
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s image-upscaling library for PS5 Pro. Sony describes it as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel during upscaling. It is a feature of the console platform, not a separate accessory, and a game must support it.
Sony said in February 2026 that the original PSSR had been used in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles as of that announcement. That is Sony’s dated count, not a live total.
FSR: AMD’s broader feature family
FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is AMD’s family of rendering features rather than one fixed upscaler. AMD’s current naming calls its machine-learning upscaler FSR Upscaling, formerly FSR 4. The current suite also includes Frame Generation, Ray Regeneration, and Radiance Caching. Those features do different jobs, so a comparison should name the specific one in use rather than treating “FSR” as synonymous with upscaling.

AMD lists broader support for earlier FSR generations than for its ML-based FSR Upscaling. Check the specific game, feature, GPU model, and current requirements before assuming compatibility; support lists and rollout plans can change.
What changed with PSSR in 2026?
On March 16, 2026, Sony announced a substantially revised PSSR neural network and algorithm. Sony said the upgraded version was rolling out broadly to supported titles and could also be enabled through an optional PS5 Pro system setting for games that already supported PSSR. Sony describes its intended benefits as “enhanced image stability, improved clarity in fine details, and more consistent performance across supported titles.” That is Sony’s description, not a matched independent test against FSR.

Sony says the system-level enhancement can be turned off if it causes unexpected visual effects. The practical result can vary by title, so assess the game and its settings rather than assuming the update looks or behaves identically everywhere.
Which looks better: PSSR or FSR?
There is no sound universal winner in the available official material. Sony describes PSSR’s intended improvements, while AMD presents FSR Upscaling as a way to reconstruct crisp visuals from lower-resolution frames. Neither vendor’s descriptions establish that its technology looks better than the other in every game, and they are not a controlled comparison.

Image quality depends on the specific game implementation and conditions. Fine detail in a still frame is only part of the picture: movement can reveal instability, flicker, ghosting, or other artifacts. A useful comparison should identify the game and patch, exact technology and version, hardware, internal and output resolution, quality mode, whether frame generation is enabled, and the observed frame rate and motion behavior.
For example, Sony quoted Remedy graphics technical director Tatu Aalto describing upgraded PSSR in Remedy’s games: “The upgraded PSSR improves image upscaling quality and stability.” That is a developer observation about particular titles, not a head-to-head result against FSR.

Does FSR work on PS5 Pro?
The cited sources describe PSSR as Sony’s PS5 Pro upscaling feature and FSR as AMD’s feature family for supported games and listed hardware. They do not establish FSR support as a PS5 Pro feature. For a PS5 Pro game, check the developer’s specific feature support; on PC, check the game and GPU requirements for the exact FSR option.
How should you compare them in a real game?
- Match the game and build. Compare the same title, patch, scene, and graphics mode wherever possible.
- Name the feature and version. Distinguish PSSR from the upgraded PSSR rollout, and identify FSR Upscaling or another FSR feature and its version where available.
- Record the rendering conditions. Note hardware, internal resolution, output resolution, and quality preset; these determine what work the upscaler is being asked to do.
- Keep frame generation separate. If enabled, report it explicitly. Frame generation is not the same function as upscaling and can affect frame-rate and latency interpretation.
- Inspect motion as well as stills. Look at fine detail, stability during movement, and visible artifacts rather than judging only a paused screenshot.
What performance figures are available?
AMD reports that FSR Upscaling renders 4K frames in approximately 1.3 milliseconds on a Radeon RX 9070 XT in Performance mode. This is an AMD-reported figure for that hardware and mode, not a general measure of FSR performance and not directly comparable with Sony’s PS5 Pro claims. The cited official material provides no neutral, matched PSSR-versus-FSR performance statistic.

AMD’s March 2026 FSR “Redstone” SDK article lists FSR Upscaling 4.1, Frame Generation 4.0.0, Ray Regeneration 1.1.0, and Radiance Caching 0.9 in preview. SDK versions do not by themselves establish that a particular game exposes every feature or version.
