If PuTTY accepts your SSH credentials but leaves an empty or black window, authentication has succeeded but an interactive terminal may not have been created or its output may be invisible. Check the session in this order: request a pseudo-terminal, make sure PuTTY starts a shell rather than suppressing it, leave the terminal type at xterm, test the background-colour erase option, then inspect the Event Log and session log. If those settings are correct, the account shell or its startup files on the server are the likely cause.

Use one change at a time so you can tell which layer is responsible. Disconnect and reconnect after changing a setting that affects terminal negotiation.

- Request a PTY. In Connection > SSH > TTY, do not select Don’t allocate a pseudo-terminal. Interactive Unix shells normally run inside a pseudo-terminal (PTY), which gives the SSH server a terminal device for input, output and terminal control.
- Allow a shell to start. Check that the session is not configured to run a one-shot command or to use Don’t start a shell or command at all.
- Use a conventional terminal type. In Connection > SSH > Data, set Terminal-type string to
xtermfirst. Testvt220only if the remote program is incompatible withxterm. - Test screen rendering. In PuTTY’s Terminal settings, toggle Use background colour to erase screen, then reconnect. A clear-screen operation can otherwise leave text apparently invisible when the erase colour matches the window background.
- Collect evidence. Open the Event Log and enable session logging. Printable output and terminal control sequences in the log show whether the server sent data that PuTTY failed to display or sent nothing usable at all.
If the window remains blank after these checks, the server administrator needs to examine the account’s login shell and shell startup files. A successful password exchange does not prove that a shell process or PTY was created.
Why SSH authentication can succeed while the screen stays empty
SSH performs several separate operations. The client and server negotiate a connection, authenticate the user, request channels, optionally allocate a PTY, and then start either an interactive shell or a specified command. PuTTY can therefore report a successful login even when the final interactive stage is missing.

- No PTY: the server may provide a channel without terminal semantics. Programs that expect a terminal can produce no useful prompt or output.
- No shell: a command-line option or saved-session setting can deliberately suppress the shell. Authentication still completes, but there is nothing interactive to display.
- Incompatible
TERMvalue: the terminal-type string tells programs which control sequences PuTTY understands. A program that assumes capabilities absent from the announced type can render incorrectly or clear the display. - Invisible rendering: output and clear-screen sequences may arrive, but colour settings can make the text blend into the background.
- Server startup failure: the account’s shell, profile scripts or forced command can exit, loop, clear the screen or redirect output immediately after authentication.
These causes look similar in the window, which is why changing several options at once makes diagnosis harder. Treat PTY allocation, shell startup, terminal type and display rendering as separate tests.
Fix pseudo-terminal allocation in the PuTTY interface
Enable a PTY for an interactive login
- Load the affected saved session in PuTTY.
- Open Connection > SSH > TTY.
- Ensure Don’t allocate a pseudo-terminal is not selected.
- Return to the session screen, save the session if you want the correction to persist, and reconnect.
PuTTY’s documentation explains that most interactive Unix shell sessions run in a pseudo-terminal. The PTY lets the remote system treat the SSH channel as a terminal device, so line editing, prompts, window-size handling and terminal control sequences work as expected.

Check the equivalent command-line options
When starting PuTTY from a command prompt or script, inspect the options as well as the saved GUI profile. The relevant flags have opposite effects:

For a test launch, use the PuTTY executable with -t and the same destination and account you normally use. If a script contains -T or -N, remove those flags for the interactive test. A command that deliberately opens no shell cannot show a shell prompt, even though the SSH connection itself is valid.

Make sure PuTTY is starting a shell, not suppressing it
A blank window after login often means PuTTY was instructed to do something other than start an interactive shell. Review the session’s SSH options for a configured remote command and for the setting that says not to start a shell or command. A one-shot command may run and exit before you can see output, while the no-shell option leaves the authenticated channel with no interactive program.

- Create a temporary PuTTY session instead of editing the profile you use for automation.
- Select SSH, enter the same host and port, and leave the remote-command field empty.
- Enable PTY allocation and leave shell startup enabled.
- Connect with the same account.
If the temporary profile displays a prompt, compare it with the saved profile. The difference is usually a no-shell setting, a forced command, a terminal option or another automation-specific value. Save the working profile under a new name before changing the original.
A session that is intentionally used for port forwarding or another non-interactive purpose may correctly contain -N or its GUI equivalent. Use a separate profile for administration so that an automation setting is not mistaken for a failed login.
Use the right terminal type
PuTTY announces its terminal type to SSH servers as xterm by default. Most Unix command-line programs recognize that description. Keep it as the baseline while troubleshooting.
- Open Connection > SSH > Data.
- Find Terminal-type string.
- Enter
xterm, reconnect, and test whether a prompt and ordinary commands appear. - If the remote application’s documentation specifies another terminal, test
vt220and reconnect.
Change only this field for the test. A different TERM value changes the control sequences programs emit; it does not repair a missing PTY or a suppressed shell. If changing from xterm to vt220 fixes one legacy application, keep that value in a dedicated profile and use xterm for systems that expect it.

Terminal-type compatibility is application-specific. A login prompt that works while a full-screen editor is blank points more strongly to terminal capabilities than to authentication. Follow the remote application’s manual when it requires a particular terminal description.
Rule out text that is present but invisible
PuTTY processes terminal control sequences such as clear-screen commands. Depending on the colour settings, a clear operation can paint the screen with the same colour used for the apparent text or otherwise make received output look empty.
Toggle background-colour erase
- Open PuTTY’s Terminal settings.
- Find Use background colour to erase screen.
- Toggle the option to the opposite state.
- Reconnect, or reset the terminal after changing it, and watch for the prompt.
This test addresses rendering only. If the log shows no printable output and no terminal control sequences, changing colours cannot create a shell; return to PTY and shell checks.
Distinguish a cleared screen from a dead session
- Pressing Enter and seeing a new prompt indicates that the shell is alive and the original display was likely cleared or drawn invisibly.
- Typing a harmless command and seeing its output after changing the erase-colour option points to rendering.
- No response to input, together with a log that stops after authentication, points to shell startup, a forced command or server-side failure.
Reconnect after each display change so that old screen contents do not confuse the comparison. A fresh connection also repeats terminal negotiation with the new settings.
Use Event Log and session logging as evidence
PuTTY’s Event Log records connection and negotiation messages. Session logging can capture printable characters and terminal control sequences received from the server. Together they separate “the server sent nothing useful” from “PuTTY received output that was rendered invisibly.”

What to record
- Open the PuTTY Event Log for the affected connection.
- Enable session logging in PuTTY’s logging settings before reconnecting.
- Connect again and reproduce the blank screen without issuing sensitive commands.
- Save the log and note the last event, whether printable characters appear, and whether control sequences are present.
Do not publish a session log that contains passwords, tokens, private keys, personal data or command output from a production system. Redact those values before sending diagnostic excerpts to an administrator.
Interpret the two main outcomes

When the server, not PuTTY, is at fault
If a clean PuTTY profile has SSH selected, requests a PTY, starts a shell, uses xterm, and still shows no prompt, stop changing client display settings. Ask the server administrator to check the account and the login path.
Account login shell
Unix accounts have a configured login shell. If it is missing, points to a non-interactive program, exits immediately or is blocked by policy, SSH can authenticate the user without producing an interactive prompt. The administrator should verify that the account is assigned a valid shell and that the shell binary is available and executable.

Shell startup files run immediately after the shell starts. A syntax error, an unconditional exit, a command that waits for input, an unexpected clear-screen command or output redirection can make the session appear blank or terminate. The administrator should review the files for the affected account and compare them with a known-good account, while preserving any required site policy.
Forced commands and access policy
Server-side SSH configuration can attach a forced command to a key or account. That command may intentionally provide no prompt, emit output only for a particular request or close the channel. The administrator should inspect account restrictions, key options and SSH server rules when the same PuTTY settings work for another user.

Because shell behavior depends on the remote operating system and administrator configuration, there is no universal PuTTY-side switch that can repair a broken login shell. Provide the administrator with the Event Log, a redacted session log and the exact client settings used.
Compare the failure patterns before changing more settings

Practical recovery playbooks
The window is blank immediately after a successful password
First verify the TTY page and remove any no-PTY choice. Then check that no remote command and no-shell option is configured. Reconnect with xterm and the default display settings. If the log still ends after authentication, send the evidence to the administrator for shell and startup-file checks.
A prompt appears only after forcing -t
The connection itself is healthy; the original launch path omitted a PTY. Correct the saved GUI session or script rather than relying on a one-off command. Keep -T only in profiles that intentionally run without terminal semantics.
The log shows data but the window looks empty
Toggle the background-colour erase option and reconnect. Leave the terminal type at xterm while testing. If a specific application remains unusable but ordinary shell text is visible, consult that application’s terminal requirements and test vt220 in a separate profile.
The command-line launch closes or never displays a prompt
Look for -N or a configured remote command. Those settings intentionally prevent an interactive shell. Remove them for the test profile, request a PTY with -t, and reconnect.
Every client setting appears correct
Stop changing colours and terminal types. Capture the Event Log and a redacted session log, then ask the administrator to verify the account’s login shell, startup files, forced commands and access policy. The same test from another account or host can help isolate an account-specific problem.

PuTTY’s documentation index lists version 0.85 as the latest release documentation in the material used for this guide, while the detailed pages describing these options are versioned 0.70, 0.76 and 0.78. Newer builds can alter wording or menu placement slightly; look for the same settings by function if a label differs.
The behavior described here applies to SSH sessions that are expected to provide an interactive Unix-style shell. Server shell behavior, startup files, access restrictions and firewall handling vary by operating system and administrator configuration. No authoritative figure establishes how often blank PuTTY SSH screens occur, so the symptoms should be treated as diagnostic patterns rather than a prevalence claim.
