The numbers point toward a growing share of PvE in the mix of games played—but not toward a universal victory over PvP. Newzoo’s 2021–2024 data shows the clearest shift on Steam, while PlayStation and Xbox remain close to parity. It measures shares of titles played, not hours, unique-player totals, or a direct vote on which mode people prefer.
What do PvE and PvP player numbers actually measure?
Newzoo’s The PC & Console Gaming Report 2025 uses player-panel data from Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox across 37 markets, excluding China and India. Its 2024 figures, with comparisons back to 2021, divide the titles played into PvE, PvP, and mixed PvP/PvE categories. The denominator is titles played—not time spent in each mode or the number of players who chose one mode over another. Newzoo report, pp. 59–60.
That distinction matters. A person can play several PvE titles and still spend most of their gaming time in one competitive game. The chart also does not appear to separate single-player from multiplayer titles, according to PC Gamer’s analysis of Newzoo’s report. So the figures describe the composition of games played in this panel; they are not a global player census or a direct preference poll.
How did the PvE, PvP, and mixed shares change by platform?
Here is the reported share of titles played in 2021 and 2024. Percentages may not total 100% because of rounding.

| Platform | Year | PvE | PvP | Mixed PvP/PvE |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | 2021 | 47% | 34% | 18% |
| Steam | 2024 | 58% | 30% | 12% |
| PlayStation | 2021 | 39% | 39% | 23% |
| PlayStation | 2024 | 42% | 42% | 16% |
| Xbox | 2021 | 39% | 37% | 23% |
| Xbox | 2024 | 41% | 41% | 18% |
Steam had the largest change: PvE’s share rose by 11 percentage points between 2021 and 2024, while PvP and mixed titles took smaller shares. On PlayStation and Xbox, PvE’s share increased by three and two percentage points respectively. In 2024, PvE and PvP each represented 42% of titles played on PlayStation and 41% on Xbox. The console results therefore show movement in the mix, but not a decisive separation between the two categories.
Do players prefer PvE or PvP?
The Newzoo data cannot answer that for players as individuals. It supports a narrower conclusion: in this panel, PvE accounted for a larger share of titles played in 2024 than it did in 2021 on all three platforms, with a substantially larger increase on Steam. It does not establish that all, or even most, players prefer PvE, nor that they spent more hours in it.

Newzoo also examined the composition of titles played by people who reached the 30-title point in 2024. It says that point represents approximately 90% of all titles played during the year on each platform. Within that group’s title mix, the shares were:
| Platform | PvE | PvP | Mixed PvP/PvE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | 66% | 22% | 12% |
| PlayStation | 52% | 33% | 15% |
| Xbox | 51% | 32% | 18% |
This is a relationship between the breadth of titles played and their mode composition. It does not show that an individual player grows more interested in PvE as they play more games.

Are PvP games dying?
These figures do not show that PvP games are dying. PvP still made up 30% of the titles played in Newzoo’s 2024 Steam panel and 41–42% on the two consoles. A declining share on one platform is not the same thing as declining player counts, hours, revenue, or the disappearance of games in that category—and this dataset does not measure those outcomes.
The title’s “debate is getting worse” framing is about the argument around game modes, not a trend established by these statistics. The sources quantify play patterns, but do not measure whether public discussion has become more hostile over time.

Why can PvPvE games resist a two-camp reading?
One reported example is Arc Raiders. PC Gamer reported on April 16, 2026, that Embark Studios shared figures with The Guardian showing roughly 30% of players focused on co-op, roughly 30% focused on PvP, and roughly 40% enjoyed both. These are game-specific figures, relayed second-hand through PC Gamer’s account; they are not an industry-wide estimate. The categories also allow for overlap, unlike an either-or framing. PC Gamer, April 16, 2026.
The same story reports that more than 95% of Arc Raiders players use proximity chat. Executive producer Aleksander Grøndal described one encounter in which players stopped shooting each other and faced a larger threat together: “In an instant—like literally in less than 30 seconds—everyone on that server stopped shooting each other and faced the bigger challenge together.” Grøndal also said, “And I hadn’t really anticipated the fact that every single one would cooperate that easily in a 30-second timeframe.” These are his recollections of a particular encounter, not measured evidence of general player behavior. His stated design intent was: “We want to instil hope in the player.”
What the figures settle—and what they don’t
- They do show: PvE’s share of titles played rose from 2021 to 2024 in Newzoo’s panel on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox; the increase was largest on Steam.
- They don’t show: a universal player preference, the share of total gaming hours, a headcount of PvE and PvP players, or a global result that includes China and India.
- They do not establish: that PvP is collapsing or that online arguments have become more hostile over time.
Unity’s 2025 Gaming Report does not fill the preference gap: it reports developer survey responses collected from October 17, 2024, through February 4, 2025, about multiplayer plans and player-experience priorities—not a direct comparison of players’ PvE and PvP preferences.
