PvP pinball is not one single rule set. It can mean taking turns on one machine and comparing scores, playing a multi-game match in which wins advance you through a bracket, arranging a best-of series with a friend, or using a rare machine designed for simultaneous attacks. The machine, turn order and win condition determine what actually changes.
In an ordinary game, your goal is usually to keep the ball alive and post the highest score you can. Against another person, you must also account for that player’s result, the format’s scoring system, the order in which choices are made and the rules that govern turns and interference. The sections below separate those formats so “PvP” does not imply that two people normally control one ball at the same time.

What “PvP pinball” can mean
“Player versus player” describes competition, not a particular piece of pinball hardware. Before starting, identify four things:
- Turn structure: Do players alternate turns on one machine, or can they play simultaneously?
- Unit of competition: Is the result one game, several games, or a tournament stage?
- Win condition: Does the highest score win, do finishing places award points, or does a player need a target number of game wins?
- Interaction: Are opponents merely comparing results, or can one player directly damage or disable the other?
Those questions distinguish conventional multiplayer pinball from head-to-head tournament play and from purpose-built simultaneous machines. A venue or event may use “PvP” for any of them, so its published rules are more precise than the label.

Common formats at a glance
| Format | What players do | How the result is decided | What differs from a solo high-score game |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turn-based multiplayer | Players share a machine and take their player slots in order. | Scores or finishing-place points. | You monitor the group’s standing as well as your own score. |
| Tournament qualifying | Players are grouped in scheduled multiplayer games over one or more sessions. | Points based on finishing position and the event’s advancement rules. | Consistency and group results affect qualification or seeding. |
| One-on-one tournament match | Two opponents play a sequence of selected games in a bracket. | Match wins; the bracket determines who advances. | Machine choice, playing position, seed and the current match score matter. |
| Casual head-to-head series | Friends agree on a fixed number of games or a first-to-target contest. | The player who reaches the required number of wins. | The series result matters more than one unusually high or low game. |
| Simultaneous purpose-built PvP | Players operate a machine designed for live interaction between sides. | Machine-specific attack, defense or health objectives. | Mechanics can directly affect the opponent instead of only comparing scores. |
These are useful categories, not universal rules. A local league may combine them or use different scoring. Always read the event’s current format before assuming how a “PvP” game works.
Classic pinball: the baseline
For this comparison, “classic pinball” means the ordinary single-player score game, whether the cabinet is modern or vintage. You plunge a ball, operate the flippers and try to maximize points before losing your allotted balls. The machine’s rules determine jackpots, modes, bonuses and extra balls; there is no opponent whose score can change the machine’s objective while you play.
That baseline is important because most multiplayer pinball does not change the physical playfield. Players still use the same flippers and usually play separate turns. What changes is the information you need and the way the final result is calculated.
How ordinary multiplayer pinball works
On a standard machine, multiplayer usually means that several player slots are started at the beginning of the game. Each person plays their own turn, then the machine advances to the next player. After all players have completed their balls, the displayed scores are compared. A winner may simply be the highest score, or a venue may award points by finishing position.
Starting a legal multiplayer game
- Agree on the number of players and confirm the machine is set for that count.
- Start every player slot before the first player plunges.
- Confirm the order shown by the machine and keep that order throughout the game.
- Take only your own turn. Do not plunge, nudge or operate the cabinet while another player is active.
- Record or verify the final scores after the last player’s ball ends.
The 2024.02 PAPA/IFPA Complete Competition Rules make all participants responsible for starting the correct number of players. Adding a player after player one has plunged is not allowed. The practical reason is simple: an omitted slot changes the game’s turn sequence and can make the scores incomparable.

What you are tracking
A solo player can concentrate on ball control and the machine’s available modes. In multiplayer, you also watch whether your current score is ahead of the other players and how many balls remain for each person. A large score lead may disappear if another player has several balls left, so the visible ranking is only meaningful when the players are at comparable points in their turns.
Tournament qualifying is different from a single game
Competitive events often use multiplayer games during qualification, then apply a separate format for the finals. Finishing first in one game may earn more points than finishing fourth, but the objective is usually to accumulate enough points across scheduled games to qualify. A player who avoids disastrous finishes can advance even without recording the event’s largest single score.

IFPA21: a documented example
The International Flipper Pinball Association’s IFPA21 rules provide a specific example rather than a universal template. The championship has eight qualifying sessions. Each session contains three four-player games, and players receive points according to finishing position. After qualification, the top 32 players advance to final rounds conducted as head-to-head single elimination.
The same rules describe final matches as a race to four wins across selected machines. Each player has machine-selection choices under the event’s procedures, and seed or prior selections determine who chooses in particular situations. If the six scheduled games finish with the match tied 3–3, the rules provide a sudden-death best-of-three stage. The official overview summarizes the finals as: In the final rounds, qualifying players play against each other in head-to-head single elimination matches until a winner is determined.
This example shows why “head-to-head” can be misleading. In the qualifying stage, four players can be in one multiplayer game taking turns. In the final stage, two players are competing in a sequence of games for match wins. Neither stage normally has both players controlling the same ball at once.

What the bracket changes
- One game is not the whole result. A player can lose an individual game and still win the match by taking more games overall.
- Seeding has practical consequences. Under the IFPA21 rules, seed and earlier selections affect machine or starting-position choices. That is a rule feature of this event, not a universal tournament convention.
- Consistency has a new value. Qualifying rewards repeated finishes across sessions, while the elimination bracket rewards winning the required number of games against one opponent.
- The opponent’s choices become relevant. You may have to choose a machine or position with the match score and the other player’s selection in mind.
Casual PvP: turning a friendly game into a match
Friends do not need a formal tournament to play competitively. A simple agreement can define a series before anyone starts:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Choose the machines that are allowed and decide whether both players use the same machine for every game.
- Set the target, such as best-of-three or best-of-fifteen. In a best-of-three, the first player to win two games wins the series.
- Decide how ties, malfunctions, extra balls and machine outages will be handled.
- Keep a visible game-by-game record rather than relying on memory.
- Stop as soon as one player reaches the required number of wins, unless both players agree to finish the remaining games for practice.
Match Play’s challenge documentation uses best-of-three and best-of-fifteen as examples and distinguishes a group challenge from a single-game high-score challenge. The important choice is whether you are comparing one score or declaring a series winner. The service documentation describes those formats; availability and features can change, so confirm the current setup if you use it to track results.
Simultaneous head-to-head machines are a separate category
Two people can play at the same time only when the machine is designed for it, or when an event links separate games with a defined live objective. That is not how ordinary pinball cabinets work.
PinBaltimore’s tournaments and competition page describes rare examples. Challenger, produced in 1971, is reported there as having 110 units made. Joust, produced in 1983, is reported as having 402 units. The page presents both as simultaneous head-to-head machines, not as typical examples of the wider pinball market.
The same page describes a Battle Stations prototype in which players attack an opponent’s reactor or health bar. An attack can temporarily disable the other side’s flippers. The objective therefore is not simply to finish with the larger conventional score; it is to manage attacks, defense and the machine’s health-based goal. These mechanics are specific to that design and should not be generalized to standard tournament machines.

How simultaneous play feels mechanically different
- Shared timing: You make decisions while seeing the other player act, rather than waiting for a turn to end.
- Direct consequences: A successful attack can alter the opponent’s available controls or progress.
- Machine-specific goals: Health, reactor damage or another objective may replace the normal high-score finish.
- Rarity: The documented machines are historical or event examples, not broadly available retail recommendations.
What changes in your decisions when another player is involved
You track a result, not just a score
In score-based multiplayer, the relevant question is often “What position will this score produce?” rather than “Is this my personal best?” In a match, the question becomes “How many wins do I still need?” A conservative game can be correct when one win is enough, while an aggressive attempt may be justified when you must win the current game to avoid elimination. Those are format-based inferences, not universal advice about the best way to play every machine.
Selection and position can be rule-controlled
Some tournaments let players select machines, choose a starting position or receive those choices according to seed. The IFPA21 rules document such procedures. If your event has no selection rule, do not assume that seed grants an advantage; ask the director how choices are assigned.
Turn order becomes part of fair play
In a normal multiplayer game, the order is established at the start and remains visible on the machine. In a tournament, officials may assign or confirm the order. A player who begins the wrong slot can give one person an extra turn or leave another person out, so verify the player count before the first plunge.
Psychological claims need caution
An opponent can make a game feel more urgent, but the available rules do not establish that PvP is universally more stressful, social or skillful. What can be stated confidently is mechanical: you have another result to monitor, and the format may impose match decisions that do not exist in a solo game.
Rules and etiquette that prevent disputes
The 2024.02 PAPA/IFPA rules provide concrete multiplayer safeguards. Local events can add requirements, so treat these as a baseline and then read the event’s own rules.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Start the correct player count. Everyone shares responsibility for checking that all intended players are entered before player one plunges.
- Do not add players late. Adding a player after the first plunge is prohibited.
- Play only when it is your turn. Playing out of turn can result in a score of zero.
- Do not interfere deliberately. Deliberate interference can also result in a zero score.
- Ask for an official when needed. Tournament officials or scorekeepers can be asked to start a final-round game.
- Follow the posted event rules. A tournament may specify machine order, extra-ball treatment, malfunction procedures or tiebreakers that differ from another event.
Good etiquette also means announcing an uncertain situation before plunging, keeping hands away from the cabinet during another player’s ball and confirming scores while the result is still visible. Those habits reduce disputes without changing the game’s competitive objective.
How to choose a PvP format
| If you want… | Use… | Agree on… |
|---|---|---|
| A quick comparison on one machine | Turn-based multiplayer | Player count, order and whether the highest score or finishing-place points win. |
| A repeatable contest with friends | Best-of-three or another best-of series | Allowed machines, target wins, tiebreaks and how to record each game. |
| A ranked competitive event | Qualifying plus a published bracket | Qualification points, advancement cutoff, machine choices and match tiebreakers. |
| Live attacks and shared action | A purpose-built simultaneous machine | The machine’s attack, health and victory rules; do not assume standard scoring applies. |
If you are organizing the contest, write the answers down before the first game. “We are playing PvP” is not enough to tell participants whether they should expect turns, a series or simultaneous control.
Common misunderstandings
“PvP means both players use the same ball.”
Usually it does not. Conventional multiplayer gives each player separate turns and compares the resulting scores. Shared live control is a special machine feature.
“Every pinball tournament is a head-to-head bracket.”
No. The IFPA21 championship example uses four-player qualifying games before its one-on-one finals, and other events can use different structures.
“The highest single score always decides the winner.”
Not in a multi-game match or a qualifying system that awards points by finishing position. Confirm whether the event counts scores, placement points or match wins.
“Rare head-to-head machines are normal commercial options.”
The documented Challenger, Joust and Battle Stations examples illustrate a specialized format. Their rarity and event-specific availability make them examples to seek at a venue or exhibition, not assumptions about ordinary pinball access.
A practical pre-game checklist
- Name the format: turn-based game, best-of series, tournament qualifying, bracket match or simultaneous machine.
- State the win condition: highest score, placement points, first to a target number of wins or a machine-specific objective.
- Confirm the player count and order: enter every player before the first plunge.
- Explain choices: identify who selects machines or positions and whether seed affects those choices.
- Set dispute procedures: decide who pauses play for a malfunction or rules question and who records the result.
- Record outcomes: write down scores or game wins immediately so a series result is unambiguous.
Once those details are clear, the physical act of flipping and plunging may look familiar, but the competitive task is different: you are managing a result against another player under a defined set of constraints.
