In a November 17, 2021 interview with GeekWire, Seattle gaming veteran James Gwertzman discussed joining Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) as a general partner focused on games, his career supporting game developers, and his views on where gaming was heading. He planned to leave Microsoft at the end of that month and stay in Seattle. The interview records his role and outlook at that time; it does not establish his current position or whether his forecasts came to pass.

Why Gwertzman joined a16z

Gwertzman told GeekWire that a mutual friend who served on Roblox’s board introduced him to a16z. After more than two decades supporting game creators, he saw investing as a way to help them more directly. As he put it: “And becoming a GP at a16z, focused on games, is the ultimate form of empowering game creators — to directly invest in their success.”

GeekWire reported that Gwertzman was joining a16z’s consumer investing team as a general partner focused on games and would be the firm’s first Seattle-based GP. He said he planned to leave Microsoft at the end of November 2021 and remain in Seattle. These are details of the move as reported in 2021, not confirmation of his role or location today.

His career from game studios to infrastructure

Gwertzman’s background spans game development and the services that support studios. The interview describes him as having founded and run studios, founded PlayFab, and later led Microsoft’s business serving game companies.

  • Sprout Games: Gwertzman founded the studio, which GeekWire reported was sold to PopCap in 2005.
  • PlayFab: He founded the game-services company, which GeekWire reported Microsoft acquired in 2018.
  • Microsoft: After the acquisition, he led work to establish Microsoft as a cloud platform for the game industry, a mission that grew out of PlayFab.

In the interview, Gwertzman said PlayFab worked with thousands of game studios and hosted billions of player profiles, including profiles for Minecraft, Roblox, and PUBG. Those figures are his 2021 statements as quoted by GeekWire, not independently verified statistics in the interview.

What he thought would shape gaming

Gwertzman described games not simply as products released once, but as live communities that can sustain player engagement and monetization over time. He also argued that technology developed for games could spread into other industries. These were his investment views in 2021, rather than conclusions supported by independent market data in the interview.

His excitement centered on changes to both the games players experience and the way developers create them. “I’m seeing unprecedented innovation not just in gameplay, but also in how games get built,” he said.

AI and machine learning

Gwertzman saw AI and machine learning as tools that could enable new kinds of content, more intelligent characters, and larger game worlds. The interview captures his expectations at the time; it does not measure subsequent adoption or outcomes.

Crypto and blockchain gaming

He said crypto gaming was attracting new people and ideas. GeekWire also noted that a16z had led a $5 million financing round for Seattle blockchain-gaming startup Irreverent Labs earlier that week. That funding report is historical context from November 2021, not a statement about the company’s current portfolio or later financing.

Why Seattle mattered to the move

Gwertzman’s appointment stood out in part because a16z described him as its first Seattle-based general partner. He argued that remote conversations with founders could make physical location less important, while noting that gaming talent was distributed widely. This was his perspective on investing geography in the 2021 interview, not a general finding about how venture firms operate.

GeekWire also reported that a16z had added Riot Games’ Jon Lai to its gaming investment effort. Together with Gwertzman’s appointment, that detail placed his move within the firm’s gaming focus as it stood in 2021.

What the interview establishes—and what it doesn’t

The interview is useful as a contemporaneous account of Gwertzman’s career, the rationale he gave for becoming an investor, and his gaming thesis at the time. It reports his planned departure from Microsoft, his intended Seattle base, and his statements about PlayFab’s reach. It does not establish his current job, the present status of a16z’s gaming investments, or whether his predictions about AI, crypto, and gaming technology have since been realized.
