QSSR is Sony’s AI upscaling tier for standard PS5; PSSR is the higher-end tier associated with PS5 Pro. QSSR is not the same implementation as PSSR on Pro: Sony describes it as a streamlined, performance-oriented design for the base console, while saying PSSR remains its top option on PS5 Pro. Both are optional, game-dependent technologies—not system-wide upgrades that automatically change every game.

Sony calls QSSR “a new performance tier of AI upscaling” and says it is intended to bring AI-guided upscaling to standard PS5. The company says PSSR remains the “gold standard on PS5 Pro.” Those labels describe Sony’s product positioning, not an independently measured ranking. Sony’s QSSR announcement explains the base-console design; the upgraded PSSR announcement describes the Pro feature.
What changes between the two technologies?
Different hardware targets
The clearest difference is the console each technology is designed for. Standard PS5 has QSSR, while PS5 Pro is associated with PSSR. Sony presents QSSR’s more streamlined architecture and hand-tuned implementation as a way to fit the base console’s constraints. It does not describe QSSR as the same PSSR implementation simply moved to less powerful hardware.
Different implementation tiers, not a published performance score
Sony says the PSSR library analyzes each frame pixel by pixel. For upgraded PSSR, Sony says both the neural network and the overall algorithm have changed. For QSSR, the company identifies a simplified neural network and tuning for base PS5 performance. Sony has not published a direct numerical comparison of QSSR and PSSR image quality, processing cost, resolution gains, or frame-rate effects. There is therefore no reliable percentage or benchmark that says how close QSSR gets to PSSR.

Similar intended benefits, with game-dependent results
Sony and its developer partners describe benefits such as clearer fine detail and more stable images, especially in motion. Those are qualitative claims, not a guarantee that every player will see the same improvement in every supported game. The result depends on the title’s implementation and presentation, and the available official statements do not provide controlled QSSR-versus-PSSR testing.
Which games support QSSR?
In its October 1, 2026 announcement, Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games using QSSR. Sony said patches would offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. The two games are first examples, not a complete or permanent compatibility list; Sony says it will make QSSR available to PlayStation developers and expects more titles to adopt it. Check each game’s current patch notes for its options and availability.

Developers described the benefits in their own games. Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry said it resolves fine character and environment detail with temporal stability in Ghost of Yōtei. These are studio statements about specific games, not independent tests or promises of identical results across the library.
Which games support PSSR and upgraded PSSR?
PSSR support is also title-specific. Sony named Resident Evil Requiem in February 2026 as the first game using an advanced PSSR revision and described a global rollout for PS5 Pro. In March 2026, Sony announced an optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting for PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. Sony cautioned that results may vary and unexpected visual effects are possible.

Sony’s March article discussed adoption or support involving Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Crimson Desert, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077. That is a time-bound list from March 2026, not a current guarantee of each game’s support or setting behavior. Consult current game patch notes and console settings.
In June 2026, id Software described upgraded PSSR in DOOM: The Dark Ages on PS5 Pro. The studio said its reconstruction uses motion, depth, exposure and sub-pixel sampling information, and discussed keeping details consistent during fast movement and effects-heavy scenes. Its examples—such as snow patterns, broken stone, chains and sparks—are specific to the studio’s implementation of that game.

Does QSSR make standard PS5 look like PS5 Pro?
No equivalence has been established. QSSR adds an AI upscaling option to supported standard-PS5 games, but it does not turn the base console into a PS5 Pro or make their hardware and game modes interchangeable. Sony’s public descriptions explain the intended implementation tiers but do not offer a head-to-head image comparison or numerical measure of the gap.
If you already own standard PS5, you do not need a Pro simply to use QSSR in a game that supports it. Conversely, owning a PS5 Pro does not mean every game uses PSSR: support and options depend on each title. Sony’s PS5 Pro product announcement also notes that enhanced features are limited to select games and vary by title.

How to interpret the image-quality claims
- QSSR claims: Sony says it improves image detail and stability on standard PS5; the named developers describe clearer detail and temporal stability in their own games.
- PSSR claims: Sony describes more precise reconstruction, improved motion stability and finer detail for the upgraded Pro technology. In February 2026, Sony Lead Architect Mark Cerny said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles “to date.” That is his dated Sony figure, not a current independently audited count.
- What those claims do not establish: The cited official material does not provide a controlled QSSR-versus-PSSR benchmark, universal frame-rate gain, fixed resolution uplift, or assurance that every player will prefer the result.
QSSR and upgraded PSSR are both connected in Sony’s announcements to its collaboration with AMD, Project Amethyst. That connection does not make QSSR a general AMD consumer feature or mean it is supported across AMD products.
