Qt5Multimedia.dll is either not designed to run on Windows
or it contains an error.
qt5multimedia.dll is a Qt 5 Multimedia runtime library used by a third-party Windows application. The file is not a normal Windows component, so the safest repair is to identify the application that requested it and repair or reinstall that application.

The 60-second answer
- Note the application name shown in the error.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not work, uninstall the program and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
- Restart Windows and launch the program again.
For a game, use its launcher’s Verify files, Verify integrity, or Scan and repair command before reinstalling the entire game.
Do not download a standalone copy of qt5multimedia.dll from a random DLL website. The file may have the wrong Qt build, architecture, or dependencies, and the download may be unsafe. A replacement DLL can also hide the real problem: an incomplete application install, missing Qt plugins, or a missing Visual C++ runtime.

What qt5multimedia.dll does
Qt Multimedia is a software module used by Qt applications for features such as:
- Audio playback and recording
- Video playback
- Cameras
- Media recording
- Radio and media devices
- Multimedia controls in desktop or QML interfaces
The application normally keeps its Qt runtime files beside its executable, rather than in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. It may also have Qt plugin folders below its installation directory.
The filename alone does not identify the owner. Different utilities, media programs, engineering software, launchers, games, and hardware applications can use the same Qt library.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSome old file catalogs show a 32-bit 5.1.1.0 variant around 0.52 MB. That is only one historical build, not a universal replacement. File size, version, compiler, architecture, and dependencies can differ between applications.
What caused the failure
The most common causes are:
- An interrupted application update or reinstall
- A partial uninstall
- Antivirus quarantine
- A deleted or damaged application file
- A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
- A missing Qt dependency or plugin
- A missing Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- An application loading an incompatible copy from another directory
- A developer deployment that copied only the executable
- Less commonly, Windows component corruption or malware
The message “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that Qt5Multimedia.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load one of that DLL’s dependencies and report the failure against the file that was requested.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the correct first fix for most users.
Use Windows App repair
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally restores missing application files without removing personal settings.
If the program has no Advanced options or Repair button:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Select the program in Installed apps.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official website.
- Install the program again.
- Restart once more and test it.
For a traditional desktop application, open Control Panel, select Programs > Programs and Features, select the program, and look for Change, Repair, or a similar maintenance option.
How to tell whether this worked
The application should open without the Qt5Multimedia.dll message. If it still fails and names another file, the original missing DLL was only one part of an incomplete installation. Continue with the dependency and architecture checks below rather than copying individual DLLs.
Fix 2: Verify files for a game or launcher
If the error appears when starting a game, do not immediately download the DLL.
- Open the game launcher.
- Open the game’s Properties, Manage, or Installed Files page.
- Choose Verify files, Verify integrity, Scan and repair, or the equivalent command.
- Wait for the launcher to replace damaged or missing files.
- Restart the launcher and test the game.
If verification reports that files cannot be repaired, uninstall and reinstall the game through the launcher. A launcher-managed application may need more than the main DLL, including Qt plugins and other runtime files.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a Qt DLL after an application update or a reputation change.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving the affected application’s installation folder.
- Confirm that the application came from a trusted official installer.
- If the vendor confirms a false positive, use the security product’s restore or allow action.
- Prefer reinstalling the application after the quarantine rather than restoring an unknown file manually.
Do not restore a file only because its name matches Qt5Multimedia.dll. A suspicious file, unexpected installation folder, invalid signature, or multiple unrelated DLL errors may indicate that the application was modified. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan if the file’s origin is unclear.
Fix 4: Install the required Visual C++ runtime
Qt5Multimedia itself is not the Visual C++ runtime. However, an application built with Microsoft’s compiler may also require files such as:
VCRUNTIME140.dll
MSVCP140.dll
If the error names one of those files, or a dependency inspection tool confirms it is missing, install the matching Microsoft package from Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Use the architecture that matches the application:
- A 32-bit application needs the x86 package.
- A 64-bit application needs the x64 package.
- An ARM64 application needs the ARM64 package.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the x86 runtime. Do not choose the package based only on your Windows edition.
Installing Visual C++ will not recreate a missing Qt5Multimedia.dll. Repair the application as well.
Fix 5: Check the application architecture and Qt build
A 32-bit executable cannot use a 64-bit Qt5Multimedia.dll, and a 64-bit executable cannot use a 32-bit copy. Qt runtime files must also match the application’s Qt release and compiler build.
Architecture or build mismatches often produce:
The application was unable to start correctly.
Bad Image
The procedure entry point could not be located.
The file is not designed to run on Windows.
To check the executable:
- Open the program’s installation folder.
- Right-click the main
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and note any available product information.
- If the vendor documents the architecture, confirm it matches the installed runtime.
For a more technical check, use a trusted dependency inspection tool and inspect the executable and Qt5Multimedia.dll together. Look for missing dependencies and mismatched architectures.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not mix files from another computer, another Qt version, or another application. If an older Qt5Multimedia.dll is combined with newer Qt5Core.dll or Qt5Gui.dll files, the program may report an entry-point error even though every DLL exists.
The reliable fix is to reinstall the complete application runtime.
Fix 6: Restore missing Qt plugins
Some applications need more than the main DLL. Qt applications commonly use plugin directories below the application folder. Multimedia features may require media-service plugins in addition to platform plugins.
Symptoms include:
Failed to load the media service plugin.
Available media service plugins are ...
The program may also start successfully but fail when playing, recording, or opening a camera.

Repair or reinstall the application so its complete directory structure is restored. Do not move plugin DLLs into the application root or into a Windows system folder.
If you are deploying your own Qt application, use the matching Qt build’s windeployqt tool:
QTDIRbinwindeployqt.exe C:PathToYourApp.exe
For a QML application:
windeployqt --qmldir C:PathToqml C:PathToYourApp.exe
Deploy the complete output, including the Qt libraries, compiler runtime, platform plugins, and multimedia-related plugin folders. Copying only the executable is not a complete Qt deployment.
Fix 7: Check for an incompatible copy in another folder
The DLL may exist and still fail because Windows is loading the wrong copy.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWindows normally searches the application directory before standard system locations for an ordinary unpackaged desktop application. Problems can occur when:
- An older copy was left in the application folder.
- A launcher points to a different executable than expected.
- Several versions of the program are installed.
- The application was copied manually.
- A system-wide DLL was added in an attempt to fix an earlier error.
Check the folder containing the executable that actually starts. Confirm that its Qt DLLs belong to the same application build. Remove unofficial replacements through the application’s own uninstaller or reinstall process rather than deleting files at random.

- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.

Fix 9: Update drivers only when the symptom points there
A display, audio, camera, or capture-device driver can affect multimedia features, but a driver update does not normally recreate a missing Qt5Multimedia.dll.
Use Device Manager when the program starts but media playback, recording, cameras, or audio devices fail:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Cameras.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Also install updates supplied by the hardware manufacturer when Windows does not find a suitable driver. Do not remove a working driver merely because the Qt error appeared.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the versions involved; driver installation through the full version is optional, and updating drivers will not replace a missing application DLL.
Why regsvr32 is not the answer
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Qt5Multimedia.dll is normally an application runtime library, not a COM component.
Do not run:
regsvr32 Qt5Multimedia.dll
It commonly produces an error stating that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. Registration does not repair Qt deployment. Restore the matching application files and plugin folders instead.

FAQ
Is qt5multimedia.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a Qt application runtime file and is normally installed with the program that needs it.
Which application owns the file?
The filename alone cannot tell you. Use the application named in the error dialog, check which program was recently updated, and inspect the executable or shortcut that launches when the error appears.
Should I download the DLL?
No, not from a generic DLL site. The correct file must match the application’s architecture, Qt build, compiler runtime, plugins, and version.
Does installing Visual C++ fix it?
Only when the application also lacks a required Microsoft C/C++ runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. It does not provide Qt5Multimedia.dll.
Does regsvr32 fix the error?
Normally no. This Qt runtime is not normally registered as a COM DLL.
What if the DLL is present but the error remains?
Check for a missing dependency, wrong architecture, mismatched Qt files, antivirus quarantine, or missing multimedia plugins. Reinstalling the complete application is safer than replacing one file.
What information should I provide when asking for further help?
Include the application name, executable path, exact error text, Windows 10 or Windows 11 version, whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit, and what changed immediately before the failure. Also mention whether Repair, reinstall, launcher verification, and the Visual C++ check changed the message.
