The safest fix is to identify the program showing the error, then repair or reinstall that program from its official installer. The application should restore its own matching Qt files beside the executable.

What qt5serialport.dll does
Qt applications use Qt5SerialPort.dll to configure and communicate through serial ports. Windows filenames are not case-sensitive, so an error referring to qt5serialport.dll normally means the same file.
Programs that may use it include:
- Device-configuration utilities
- Industrial-control software
- Robotics and measurement tools
- Firmware programmers
- Embedded-device utilities
- Hardware testing applications
- Other Qt 5 programs that communicate with serial equipment
The filename alone cannot identify the application that installed it. Look at the error dialog, shortcut, installer, or executable path. The file normally belongs in the application’s own folder, not in a Windows system directory.
It is also not the hardware driver. A device can require both a vendor’s driver and a Qt application that uses Qt5SerialPort.dll. Installing a generic serial driver will not recreate the missing application file.
Why the error appears
The usual causes are:
| Cause | What happened | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete installation | The application never received all of its Qt files | Repair or reinstall the application |
| Failed update or uninstall | Files were removed or only partly replaced | Run the official repair or installer |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software isolated the DLL or a dependency | Check protection history before restoring |
| Wrong architecture | A 32-bit and 64-bit file were mixed | Install the matching application package |
| Missing dependency | Another Qt or runtime DLL cannot load | Restore the complete application runtime |
| Moved portable program | The executable was separated from its libraries | Restore the original folder structure |
| Corruption | Storage or application files were damaged | Reinstall and check broader system health |
A “module could not be found” message can also mean that Qt5SerialPort.dll exists but one of its dependencies does not.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the most likely solution.
First, locate the program
- Read the error window and note the application name.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field to see the executable path.
- Open that folder and look for
Qt5SerialPort.dll.
If the file is absent, do not copy one from another program. The application needs its complete, matching Qt package.
Try Windows’ repair option
For a Microsoft Store or modern packaged application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If Repair does not work, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
For traditional desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the program, restart Windows if requested, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. For a portable program, download the complete archive again and extract every file into one folder. Do not copy only the executable or only Qt5SerialPort.dll.
The repair worked if the application starts and its other Qt files remain together beside the executable. If the error changes to another missing DLL, the original installation was incomplete and needs a full reinstall rather than another isolated download.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
A program that worked yesterday but suddenly reports a missing DLL may have been affected by antivirus software.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the relevant detection.
- Confirm that it belongs to the application you installed from a trusted official source.
- Verify the application publisher and installation source.
- Restore or allow the file only when you are confident it is legitimate.
Restoring a quarantined file can allow malware to run. If Defender repeatedly removes the file, reinstall the application from its official source and contact the application developer or security-product vendor. Do not create a broad exclusion for an unknown DLL.

If the file is restored but the application still fails, check whether Defender quarantined a companion file such as a Qt core library or compiler runtime.
Fix 3: Correct a 32-bit or 64-bit mismatch
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit software, but a 32-bit DLL cannot replace a 64-bit DLL and vice versa.
Install the application version that matches the program:
- An x86 application needs its compatible 32-bit Qt files.
- An x64 application needs its compatible 64-bit Qt files.
- ARM-based systems require software packages supported by that application and Windows installation.
To check the Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Look at System type.
The operating system’s architecture does not always reveal the application’s architecture. If the program has separate x86 and x64 installers, use the package specified by the vendor. A wrong-architecture file may produce “not designed to run on Windows” or status 0xc000007b.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 4: Restore the Visual C++ runtime when applicable
Some Qt applications are built with Microsoft Visual C++ and require runtime files such as vcruntime140.dll or msvcp140.dll. Others use MinGW and need a different runtime. Therefore, Visual C++ Redistributable is not a universal fix.
If the application vendor identifies an MSVC build:
- Download the supported Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft.
- Choose x86 for a 32-bit application, x64 for a 64-bit application, or ARM64 where applicable.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
The x86 and x64 packages can coexist. Do not remove older redistributables automatically because another application may depend on one of them.
If the program uses MinGW, install the runtime supplied by the application vendor instead. The Microsoft package will not replace a MinGW deployment.

Qt5Core.dllQt5Gui.dllQt5Widgets.dllQt5SerialPort.dll- Application-specific plugins
These files must match the application’s Qt version, compiler, architecture, and release configuration. Combining Qt5SerialPort.dll from one program with Qt5Core.dll from another can cause loading failures or crashes.
Use the application’s installer or vendor package to restore the complete set. If you are the developer deploying the program, Qt’s deployment tool can scan the executable and copy the required modules, including the Serial Port module. The tool must come from the same Qt build environment as the application.
If the program starts and then displays a Qt platform-plugin error, that is a separate deployment problem. A Windows Qt application commonly needs qwindows.dll in a platforms subfolder.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall the related device driver
The DLL is not itself a driver, but the affected application may control a USB-to-serial adapter, programmer, controller, or other device.
Check the hardware separately:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Ports (COM & LPT).
- Look for a warning icon or an unrecognized device.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install the signed package supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
- If the device remains broken, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and reinstall the vendor’s driver.
Do not expect a driver update to restore Qt5SerialPort.dll. If the application itself is missing the file, reinstall the application as well.
When manually hunting through device entries and driver versions becomes repetitive, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. The hardware vendor’s signed driver remains the preferred source, and reinstalling the affected program is still the definitive fix for this DLL.
Fix 7: Check Windows components only when Windows has wider problems
System File Checker and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally reconstruct a private Qt DLL installed by a third-party application.
Use them when Windows itself has broader symptoms, such as broken built-in apps, repeated system errors, or damaged system features.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If both commands complete successfully but the Qt error remains, return to the application installer. SFC and DISM are not substitutes for reinstalling the program.
Repeating these commands without knowing whether Windows files changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows detected issues, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and the application’s official reinstall remains the correct fix when this specific DLL is missing.
Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering components that provide an entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX files.
Qt5SerialPort.dll is normally a runtime library, not a self-registering component. Running:
regsvr32 Qt5SerialPort.dll
will usually fail with an entry-point error and will not repair the application. A successful registration message would not prove that the application has the correct Qt companion files.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
System-wide copying creates more problems than it solves:
- The architecture may be wrong.
- The Qt build may not match.
- Companion libraries may still be missing.
- Another program may load the wrong copy.
- A tampered DLL can create a security risk.
- Future application repairs may overwrite or ignore it.
Qt applications generally use private, application-local deployment. Keep the DLL beside the executable that requires it.

Is qt5serialport.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a Qt 5 application library and is not normally installed by Windows in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is it a serial-port driver?
No. It provides application APIs for serial-port communication. The device’s hardware driver is separate.
Can I download the DLL by itself?
Normally, no. Restore it through the affected program’s official installer, repair function, launcher verification, or vendor support package.
Why does Windows say the file is missing when it is visible?
A dependency may be missing, blocked, damaged, or incompatible. Check the other Qt files, compiler runtime, architecture, and antivirus history.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does reinstalling Visual C++ always fix it?
No. It helps only when the program uses MSVC and its required runtime is missing or damaged. MinGW-built applications need their compatible runtime instead.
What if the error began after a Windows update?
Repair or reinstall the affected application first. Do not assume Windows replaced or deleted this third-party Qt library. If several Windows features also malfunction, then investigate Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
What information should I give the developer?
Provide the exact error text, application name and version, executable path, Windows version, application architecture, whether the DLL exists beside the executable, antivirus history, and any accompanying error code.
