If Quake Champions crashes, hangs, shows a black screen, or will not start, begin with low-risk checks: confirm your PC meets the game’s current requirements, update Windows and your graphics driver, restart, and verify the Steam files. Test after each change so you can tell what helped. Bethesda and Steam recommend these steps, but none is a guaranteed fix for every PC.
Identify when and how the game fails
Note whether Quake Champions closes immediately, stays on a black screen, hangs during its first load, or crashes during play. The timing helps you choose a relevant step instead of changing several settings at once.
- Immediate close or failure to start: begin with requirements, updates, file verification, and background software.
- Black screen: try Bethesda’s executable compatibility setting below.
- First-load hang: Bethesda acknowledges this can happen to some players, but its support article does not give a specific fix. See the live support article about a hanging client for any current instructions.
- Crash during play: check requirements and drivers, verify files, then try reducing video settings and closing background programs.
Check requirements, Windows, and graphics drivers
Compare your PC with the current minimum requirements on the Quake Champions Steam listing. Bethesda recommends checking requirements and graphics drivers when crashes are frequent; Steam also notes that a PC at or just below a game’s requirements may have launch or performance problems. Requirements can change, so use the live listing rather than relying on an old copied specification.
Install available Windows updates and update your graphics driver using the appropriate source for your graphics hardware. Restart the PC after updates, then try launching the game again.

Restart Steam and verify the game files
Steam Support says a failure to launch can result from corruption in extracted game files. Restart the computer, open Steam, and verify the installation before trying more disruptive remedies.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Quake Champions and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam complete the check, then launch the game. Avoid other system-intensive work while verification runs.

Close overlays, monitoring tools, and other background software
Close non-essential programs and test the game again. Bethesda specifically recommends checking for conflicts with third-party software, including overclocking utilities. It names FRAPS, Plays.TV, Razer Cortex, MSI Afterburner, and EVGA Precision X as examples; that does not mean any particular app is necessarily the cause on your PC.
Change one thing at a time: close one overlay or monitoring utility, launch the game, and note the result. If nothing changes, restore it if needed and test another. This makes it easier to identify a conflict without leaving unrelated settings altered.

For a black screen, run the executable as administrator
Bethesda’s suggested black-screen workaround is to enable administrator mode for the game executable. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
- Open the Quake Champions installation folder. The default Steam location is
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommonquakechampions. If you installed Steam or the game in a custom library, use that library’s corresponding game folder instead. - Right-click
QuakeChampions.exeand choose Properties. - Open the Compatibility tab and select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then try launching the game.

If crashes continue, reset or reduce video settings
Bethesda’s frequent-crash guidance recommends resetting video settings with Auto Detect. If crashes persist, lower the options in Advanced Video and try Windowed mode. Retest after each adjustment; changing one setting at a time helps reveal whether a particular configuration is involved.

Leave reinstalling or DNS changes until later
If the checks above do not help, Bethesda also suggests reinstalling Quake Champions and Steam with both installed on the same drive, and changing the router’s DNS servers to Google’s addresses: 8.8.8.8 as primary and 8.8.4.4 as alternate. These are more involved steps, not proven diagnoses for an individual PC. Consider them only after the reversible checks, and note your original network settings before changing DNS so you can restore them.

When general troubleshooting does not resolve it
Steam’s general launch guidance says causes vary with individual hardware and software configurations, and recommends contacting the game’s developer if its general checks fail. When you ask for help, include the exact error message, when the failure occurs, your Windows version and PC hardware, and the steps you have already tried. That information is more useful than assuming a particular component or setting is responsible.
