What does Quake II Enhanced include?
Bethesda announced the enhanced release on August 10, 2023, in partnership with Nightdive Studios. The package brings together five distinct pieces of campaign content:
- Quake II: the original campaign.
- The Reckoning: the first original mission pack.
- Ground Zero: the second original mission pack.
- Quake II 64: the version originally released for Nintendo 64, presented as a separate included campaign.
- Call of the Machine: a new episode created by MachineGames.
Nintendo describes Call of the Machine as 28 campaign levels plus one deathmatch map. That is separate from the Quake II 64 content, which Nightdive lists as 19 campaign levels and 10 deathmatch maps. These figures describe those specific additions, not the total level count for the whole remaster. Nintendo’s 2023 announcement and Nightdive’s product page provide those counts.
How is the enhanced version different from the original?
Bethesda distinguishes Quake II (Original), which it says remains untouched and moddable, from Quake II (Enhanced), which adds visual improvements, new campaign content, enhanced multiplayer, crossplay and controller support. The enhanced release also includes modern resolution support, improved cinematics and lighting options, and restored or improved gameplay and AI elements, as described by Bethesda and the Xbox listing. These are presentation and feature changes, not evidence that every platform has identical settings or performance.

In its August 10, 2023 announcement, Bethesda described the release as “Experience Quake II, enhanced in partnership with Nightdive Studios to bring the ground-breaking shooter to modern hardware with new content, online multiplayer, visual upgrades and more!” Bethesda also said PC owners of Quake II, including owners on Steam or GOG, would gain access to both versions. Because that entitlement statement dates to the 2023 launch announcement, check the current store listing for your account before buying or reinstalling.
Which platforms can play Quake II Enhanced?
Bethesda lists the enhanced release for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Bethesda also describes Game Pass access, which requires an eligible subscription. The Xbox store provides a current platform listing for Xbox: Buy Quake II on Xbox. Store availability, subscription terms and regional access can change, so confirm them with the relevant storefront.
What multiplayer and split-screen options are available?
Bethesda describes online and local multiplayer and co-op, with crossplay among the listed console versions, Game Pass, and controller-enabled PC. The PC qualification matters: the FAQ does not characterize crossplay as unconditional for every PC setup. Bethesda’s 2023 release FAQ gives these local split-screen limits:

For a player who wants the classic shooter and its associated campaigns in one modern release, the package’s breadth is its clearest strength. It preserves a separate original version for PC players who prefer the untouched, moddable game, while the enhanced edition adds convenience and multiplayer features. The combination makes the remaster feel like a considered preservation effort rather than a bare visual refresh; that is an editorial judgment about its stated contents, not a claim that it performs identically on every system.
