The Queen Bismuth Oreback Crab is defeated from its shell, not by trading attacks with its legs. Find it south of the Well of Enlightenment in the Valley of Grief, climb onto its back, break the bismuth formations, cling to and pierce the three exposed white weak points, then destroy the pots on its back. Walkthroughs report 30 Bismuth Ore, one Abyss Artifact, and liberation of the area after the kill. The exact quest gate is not consistent between guides, so use the faction tracker if the encounter is not active.
Where to find the Queen Bismuth Oreback Crab
Travel to the Crimson Desert region and look south of the Well of Enlightenment. PowerPyx places the boss directly south of that landmark, while Gaming ProMax identifies the wider area as the Valley of Grief, outside the Well and south of the “F” in Forebearer’s Barrens on the map. Those descriptions point to the same broad location. If a quest marker is available, follow it; otherwise, use the Well as your navigation reference.

PowerPyx says the crab can be fought by visiting the location at any time. Gaming ProMax instead ties the encounter to the Sage of the Desert faction chain and says that completing War Song of the Dusk unlocks The Oreback Crab in the Desert. Because the two walkthroughs describe different access conditions, do not assume that one progression rule applies to every version or save. Check the faction quest category and the map before leaving the area if the boss or marker is missing.

Access and quest checks
If the crab is already marked
Select the boss objective and let the in-game marker lead you from the Well of Enlightenment. The marker is the most reliable way to handle minor differences in map naming or the exact edge of the Valley of Grief.
If no objective appears
- Open the faction or regional quest list and look under Sage of the Desert.
- Check whether War Song of the Dusk is complete and whether The Oreback Crab in the Desert is now listed.
- Return to the map and inspect the area south of the Well of Enlightenment.
- If the location is present without a quest, try entering the arena directly, as one walkthrough reports that no quest completion is required.
- If the arena is empty, advance the faction chain and recheck the tracker rather than treating the absence as a combat bug.
This procedure accommodates the conflicting access reports without claiming a universal unlock requirement.
What to prepare before engaging
This is a positional, shell-mounted encounter. Your useful preparation is therefore anything that lets you stay on the crab long enough to complete several climb, break, cling, and pierce actions. Set the primary and secondary weapons, element, arrows, food, and instant-use items you want before entering the fight. Pearl Abyss notes that several of those selections are retained when you retry a boss battle, which can save setup time after a failed attempt.

- Carry the weapon and element you already use comfortably; the available walkthroughs do not establish a special damage type that is mandatory.
- Make sure you know the controls for climbing, clinging, piercing, and releasing. The encounter depends on those actions more than on ordinary ground combos.
- Leave room in your inventory for the reported ore and artifact rewards.
- When learning the fight, watch the crab’s movement before committing to a climb. The current version contains an additional attack pattern, and its exact animation is not described in the official notes.
Do not build a plan around a numerical defense value or a guaranteed ranged strategy. Gaming ProMax says ordinary ground attacks do little damage and emphasizes fighting from the back; the documented method is the shell weak-point sequence.
The documented defeat sequence
- Approach the crab and get onto its shell.
- Break the bismuth crystal formations covering the relevant areas of its back.
- When a formation is removed, cling to the exposed white weak point and pierce it.
- Repeat the crystal-breaking and weak-point attacks for all three weak points and continue until the main health phase is depleted.
- After that phase, attack the pots stacked on the crab’s back. Destroying the pots completes the encounter.
The steps are sequential rather than interchangeable. Ground attacks may keep you occupied without making meaningful progress, while the shell objectives advance the boss toward its finishing state.
Step 1: get onto the shell
Move toward the crab’s rear or side and use the game’s climb action to reach the shell. The fight is designed around a back-mounted route, so remain focused on finding a safe path onto the carapace instead of trying to empty the health bar from the ground. Once you are mounted, orient yourself toward the visible bismuth formations.
If you are thrown off, reset your position and attempt the climb again rather than spending the entire opening phase attacking the legs. The available guides do not document a special leg weak point. Their consistent instruction is to work from the shell.

Step 2: break the bismuth formations
The crystal-like bismuth formations are the armor layer that hides the next targets. Attack those formations while you are on the back. Breaking them is not the final damage step; it exposes the white points that can actually be pierced.
Work on the formation in front of you, then reposition along the shell as the crab moves. If a crystal does not break, verify that you are striking the formation rather than the shell surface or a limb. The guides do not specify a particular weapon, element, or damage threshold for this step, so changing equipment should not be your first troubleshooting move.
Step 3: cling to and pierce the white weak points
Once a bismuth covering is gone, look for the white weak point underneath. PowerPyx reports three weak points in total. The required action is not simply a ground strike: cling to the exposed point and use the piercing attack. Treat each point as a separate objective and confirm that its attack has registered before moving to another section of the shell.
This is the answer to the common “where are its weak points?” question: they are revealed beneath the bismuth formations on the crab’s back. They are not presented as permanently visible targets on the legs or around the arena. If you cannot see one, continue the crystal-breaking step or move around the shell until the next covered section is accessible.

Because the crab can move while you are attached, prioritize staying aligned with the exposed point. A missed pierce does not mean the encounter is broken; return to the shell, reattach, and attempt the action again. The published walkthroughs do not establish a separate timing window, so avoid inventing one from an older video or a different boss.
Step 4: repeat until the main health phase ends
Cycle through the shell sections: remove a bismuth formation, expose a white point, cling, and pierce. Continue until the crab’s primary health phase is depleted. You should not expect the fight to end immediately when the last weak point is pierced; the documented finale uses a separate object on the back.
If the health bar appears to stop moving, check whether one of the three weak-point sections still has its covering intact. The guides describe the process as repeatable, not as a single break followed by one decisive hit.
Step 5: destroy the pots to finish the fight
After the main phase, target the pots stacked on the crab’s back. Attack the pots until they are smashed. PowerPyx and Gaming ProMax both describe this pot destruction as the final trigger that completes the battle.

Do not leave the arena after the weak-point phase assuming the boss is already dead. If the victory state has not appeared, climb back onto the shell and look specifically for the pot stack. The pots are a separate finishing objective, not another bismuth formation or one of the three white points.
Version 1.12.00: a new attack pattern
Pearl Abyss’s official version 1.12.00 notes state: “Added a new attack pattern for the Queen Bismuth Oreback Crab.” The notes do not name the move, show its animation, or provide a timing or counter. Older guides and videos can therefore omit an attack you encounter in the current version.
Use the established shell sequence while treating unfamiliar movement as a version difference rather than a signal to abandon the strategy. When the new attack interrupts a climb, wait for a safe opening, reapproach the shell, and resume the crystal and weak-point steps. Do not rely on an unverified claim that the move has a particular range, element, warning, or dodge direction.
The same patch notes say that, after retrying a boss battle, the following settings from the previous attempt can be retained: observed knowledge, primary and secondary weapon, selected element, quick-slot arrows and food, and instant-use items. This is useful for practice because a failed attempt does not necessarily require rebuilding that entire loadout.

Troubleshooting the encounter
The boss is not at the marked area
Confirm that you are south of the Well of Enlightenment in the Valley of Grief, not at a similarly named landmark elsewhere in Crimson Desert. Then inspect the Sage of the Desert quest category. The conflicting walkthrough reports mean that a missing quest marker may reflect progression state rather than a wrong location.
I cannot find any weak point
Weak points are revealed under the bismuth formations. Climb onto the shell and break the covering first. The white targets are not expected to remain visible from the ground or before their crystal armor is removed.

The crab takes almost no damage
Stop relying on ordinary attacks from the ground. The documented method is to fight from the back, break the formations, and pierce the exposed points. Gaming ProMax specifically warns that ground attacks do little damage, but it does not establish a universal numerical defense value.

Reattach to the exposed point and use the piercing action while positioned directly against it. If the crab has moved, reposition on the shell rather than attacking from a nearby ground angle. Check the other covered sections as well; PowerPyx reports three points, so one successful pierce does not complete the sequence.
The boss still stands after the weak-point phase
Look for the pot stack on the back. The walkthroughs identify the pots as the finishing objective after the main health phase. Smash them to trigger completion.
An unfamiliar attack defeats me during a retry
Account for the version 1.12.00 attack-pattern addition. Its behavior is not described in the patch notes, so learn its visual warning in your own game rather than following a fabricated timing from an older guide. The patch’s retry-setting retention can preserve your selected weapons, element, quick-slot arrows and food, and instant-use items while you practice.
Rewards and area liberation
Both walkthroughs report the same reward package:
| Reward or result | Reported amount or effect | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bismuth Ore | 30 | Walkthrough-reported in-game reward |
| Abyss Artifact | 1 | Walkthrough-reported in-game reward |
| Location status | Liberated | Gaming ProMax specifically names the Well of Enlightenment; both guides describe liberation of the location |
The quantities come from the cited walkthroughs, not from an independently measured drop-rate study. If a later update changes the reward screen, use the result shown in your game as authoritative for that version.

Fast decision guide
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| No marker, no crab | Check Sage of the Desert progression and the The Oreback Crab in the Desert objective; also verify the southern Well of Enlightenment location. |
| Crab visible, damage is negligible | Climb onto the shell and stop spending the phase on ground attacks. |
| Bismuth covering remains | Break the formation before searching for a white point. |
| White point exposed | Cling to it and pierce it; repeat for all three. |
| Main health phase is empty | Attack the pots stacked on the back. |
| New move appears in version 1.12.00 | Treat it as the officially added attack pattern, observe its warning, and resume the shell sequence when safe. |
Following that order keeps the encounter focused on its documented objectives: shell access, bismuth removal, three white weak points, and the final pots.
How the objectives fit together
Think of the fight as an armor-removal loop rather than a conventional health-bar duel. The shell is your route to every meaningful objective. A bismuth formation blocks access to a white point; breaking that formation creates the opening to cling and pierce; completing the weak-point cycle advances the main phase; and the pots provide the separate finishing trigger. Skipping ahead leaves the next objective unavailable.
This order also explains why a low-damage opening can be misleading. A sword, arrow, or other ordinary attack may connect while you are on the ground, but the documented progression is tied to the objects on the crab’s back. Once the shell route is understood, each movement has a purpose: climb, clear the covering, attach to the revealed target, pierce, then relocate.

The supported strategy is the intended shell weak-point route. It is repeatable, identifies all three white points, and ends with the pot stack. It does require climbing and clinging, so a player who keeps falling must spend time learning those actions rather than searching for a different damage type.
Ranged attacks, leg attacks, or a stagger-focused plan may sound attractive when the crab is moving, but the walkthroughs do not establish any of them as a reliable alternative. Gaming ProMax specifically says ordinary ground attacks do little damage. No source here supplies a ranged damage test, a leg weak point, a stagger threshold, or an element that bypasses the shell mechanics. Treat such claims as unverified rather than replacing the documented sequence with them.

The version 1.12.00 note changes the encounter’s attack pattern, not the published objective order. If a new move makes one approach unsafe, wait for an opening and return to the same shell sequence. There is no confirmed counter or special loadout for that added move.
Attempt checklist and reset routine
Use this short routine before every attempt:
- Confirm the map marker or verify the southern side of the Well of Enlightenment in the Valley of Grief.
- Check that your chosen primary and secondary weapons, element, arrows, food, and instant-use items are set.
- Approach from a side or rear angle and identify the climb route.
- After mounting, locate a bismuth formation before committing to attacks.
- When it breaks, look immediately for the exposed white point and perform the cling-and-pierce action.
- Count the three weak-point sections as you complete them, then check the main health phase.
- Once that phase is depleted, search for and smash the pots instead of disengaging.
If an attempt fails, use the retry option and verify the retained settings before changing equipment. Pearl Abyss lists observed knowledge, both weapons, the selected element, quick-slot arrows and food, and instant-use items among the settings that can carry over. That lets you practice the climb and attachment sequence without rebuilding the entire setup.
What is confirmed and what remains version-dependent
The location, shell route, three white weak points, pot finale, and reported reward package are consistent across the two walkthroughs. Quest access is the exception: one says the location can be visited at any time, while the other connects it to War Song of the Dusk and The Oreback Crab in the Desert. Use the tracker and map together rather than treating either condition as universal.
The official patch note confirms an added attack pattern in version 1.12.00 but does not describe its appearance, damage, range, or counter. Likewise, the 30 Ore and one Abyss Artifact are walkthrough-reported rewards, not a guaranteed drop-rate measurement. These limits matter when comparing an older video with a current fight: rely on what the game displays, while keeping the documented objective order intact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where exactly is the Queen Bismuth Oreback Crab?
It is in the Crimson Desert region south of the Well of Enlightenment, in the Valley of Grief. Gaming ProMax places it outside the Well and south of the “F” in Forebearer’s Barrens. Use the quest marker when one is available.
Is the boss locked behind a quest?
The guides disagree. PowerPyx says you can visit the location at any time, while Gaming ProMax says completing War Song of the Dusk in Sage of the Desert unlocks The Oreback Crab in the Desert. Check your faction tracker and map if the marker is missing.
Where are the crab’s weak points?
They are on the crab’s back, beneath the bismuth crystal formations. Break a formation first, then cling to and pierce the exposed white point. PowerPyx reports three weak points in total.
Why does the crab take so little ground damage?
The documented encounter is built around the shell objectives. Ground attacks are reported to do little damage, so climb onto the back, break the bismuth coverings, and pierce the exposed points instead of trading attacks with the legs.
What do I do after piercing all three points?
Depleting the main health phase is not the final trigger. Climb back onto the shell and destroy the pots stacked on the crab’s back. Both walkthroughs identify the pots as the action that completes the fight.
What changed in version 1.12.00?
Pearl Abyss added a new attack pattern for the Queen Bismuth Oreback Crab. The official note does not describe the move or its counter, so observe its warning in your own game and resume the shell sequence when safe.
What rewards does the boss provide?
PowerPyx and Gaming ProMax report 30 Bismuth Ore, one Abyss Artifact, and liberation of the location. Gaming ProMax specifically names liberation of the Well of Enlightenment. Treat these as walkthrough-reported results for the relevant version.
Can retry settings carry over after a failed attempt?
Pearl Abyss says retries can retain observed knowledge, your primary and secondary weapons, selected element, quick-slot arrows and food, and instant-use items. Check the retained setup before changing it for the next practice attempt.
The Bottom Line
Go south of the Well of Enlightenment, enter the Valley of Grief, and fight from the crab’s shell. Break each bismuth formation, cling to and pierce all three exposed white weak points, then smash the pots on its back. If the boss is missing, check Sage of the Desert progression; if a new move appears, remember that version 1.12.00 added an attack pattern without publishing its counter. The reported payout is 30 Bismuth Ore, one Abyss Artifact, and location liberation.
