qwt6.dll is a Qwt plotting and widget library used by Qt applications, not a Windows system file. When qwt6.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or reports a missing procedure entry point, repair the application that installed it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Identify the qwt6.dll installation first
The error message, executable name, or DLL path usually identifies the owning program. QGIS is a common example, but other Qt applications can ship their own copy, including UaExpert.

| What you find | What it usually means | Correct repair |
|---|---|---|
qwt6.dll is missing |
The application installation is incomplete, or the file was deleted or quarantined | Repair or reinstall that application |
| “Could not be loaded” | A dependency, search path, or architecture may be wrong | Check the complete application DLL set |
| “Procedure entry point not found” | An incompatible version of qwt6.dll or another Qt DLL is being loaded |
Remove mixed versions and reinstall one matching build |
| File is under a QGIS folder | QGIS or OSGeo4W is the likely owner | Repair the affected QGIS distribution |
File is under another program’s bin folder |
That application owns the file | Use its repair, verify, or reinstall feature |
The file’s size and embedded version information are not universal specifications. Although some listings show a 64-bit file with version 0.0.0.0 and a size near 1.04 MB, builds differ by application, architecture, and packaging.

Do not assume every copy belongs to QGIS. An application-specific bin folder is normally more important than a copy elsewhere on the computer.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely solution when the file is genuinely absent. The application installer supplies qwt6.dll together with the matching Qt and Qwt libraries.
Use Windows repair options
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find QGIS, OSGeo4W, UaExpert, or the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Not every desktop program exposes a Windows Repair button. If it is unavailable, use the application’s own maintenance installer or reinstall it from the developer’s official download page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReinstall QGIS or OSGeo4W cleanly
Use the official QGIS Windows download page or the official OSGeo4W installer. Choose the same architecture required by the application and avoid combining files from both distributions.
- Back up QGIS projects and any custom settings you need.
- Close QGIS, OSGeo4W shells, and related Qt applications.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected QGIS installation.
- If several old QGIS or OSGeo4W installations are present, record which one you intend to keep.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the required QGIS release using one official distribution method.
- Start QGIS from its new shortcut, not an old shortcut pointing to a removed folder.
If you maintain multiple QGIS versions, confirm that each shortcut points to the intended installation. A shortcut or environment setting aimed at an old directory can load an incompatible Qt library even after a newer version has been installed.
For another Qt application, use its Repair, Verify, or equivalent launcher function first. If no repair function exists, uninstall the affected build, restart Windows, and install a fresh copy from that application’s official vendor source.
A new QGIS profile will not restore a missing binary. It is useful only if QGIS starts far enough to load a profile and the problem is caused by settings rather than application files.

Fix 2: Remove mixed QGIS, Qt, and architecture conflicts
An entry-point error is usually a compatibility problem rather than a simple missing-file problem. It can occur when qwt6.dll comes from one build while qgis_gui.dll, qgis_app.dll, Qt DLLs, or another dependency comes from a different build.
This often follows:
- Upgrading or downgrading QGIS
- Installing multiple QGIS versions
- Installing both standalone QGIS and OSGeo4W
- Uninstalling an older QGIS directory manually
- Copying DLLs between application folders
- Restoring an old application directory
- Adding a separate Qt installation to
PATH - A failed or interrupted installation
Search for duplicate copies
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for:
qwt6.dll
- Record every full path.
- Pay particular attention to:
- Old QGIS directories
C:OSGeo4W64appsQt5binSystem32SysWOW64- Folders listed in the system or user
PATH - Standalone Qt installation folders
Do not delete files automatically. Confirm which program owns each copy. Remove or quarantine only files clearly left by an abandoned installation, and keep a backup or use the application’s uninstaller where possible.
Windows searches several locations when loading an unpackaged DLL, including the application directory, system directories, and PATH. An unrelated copy can therefore interfere with the copy supplied by the application.
Check the application architecture
A 32-bit application needs a 32-bit qwt6.dll and compatible 32-bit Qt libraries. A 64-bit application needs the corresponding 64-bit set. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit applications, but it does not make 32-bit and 64-bit DLLs interchangeable.

Then reinstall the matching application build. Do not replace one DLL manually while leaving the rest of the application’s libraries untouched.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security or third-party antivirus software may quarantine an application file. Treat this as a possibility, not proof that the file is malicious or that antivirus is the usual cause.
Check Windows Security Protection History
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events.
- Expand an event that refers to the affected application folder.
- Confirm the file path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only when you have verified that it came from the trusted application installer and the installation has not been tampered with. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can expose the device.
The safer recovery is usually to remove the damaged application and reinstall it from the official vendor source. If the file repeatedly disappears after reinstalling, review Defender history and third-party antivirus logs before trying another replacement. Also investigate failed storage hardware or malware.

Fix 4: Install required runtimes only when the application needs them
qwt6.dll is not the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable will not replace a missing Qwt file.

A runtime can still matter if the application reports that another dependency is missing or cannot be loaded. Use the application vendor’s requirements first. If the installer specifically requires a Microsoft Visual C++ package, obtain the appropriate x86, x64, or ARM64 package from Microsoft and install it.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application.
- If the same
qwt6.dllerror remains, return to the application repair or reinstall step. - Do not install several unrelated runtime packages simply because the filename contains
.dll.
Fix 5: Repair broader Windows components
Use Windows repair commands when multiple unrelated programs show DLL errors, Windows features are malfunctioning, or system files appear damaged. They do not normally recreate a private Qwt library supplied by QGIS or another application.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run the following command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Run DISM before SFC. If either command reports that it could not repair files, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the commands again. If only one application still fails, repair that application rather than repeatedly running system scans.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repairs are handled by the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program’s private qwt6.dll is missing.
Fix 6: Update the application and relevant drivers
Install the latest supported version of the affected application when the vendor lists a startup or compatibility fix. For QGIS, use the official QGIS installer or OSGeo4W channel rather than copying libraries from a different release.
Drivers are not the usual source of a missing Qwt file, but graphics or other device problems can produce separate startup failures in Qt applications. Update only the driver associated with a device or error you have identified.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters or the device category related to the error.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and version.
- Use Update Driver if an appropriate update is available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain it from the computer or hardware manufacturer. Do not treat a driver update as a replacement for the application’s qwt6.dll.
When checking every device manually means hunting through versions and guessing which of many drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can show the detected driver issues in a scan; installation of updates is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling QGIS or the application that owns qwt6.dll.
What not to do
Do not download qwt6.dll from a random DLL website
A downloaded file can contain malware, target the wrong application, use the wrong architecture, or be built against incompatible Qt libraries. It often leaves the original broken installation untouched.
Use the official QGIS download page, official OSGeo4W distribution, or the software vendor’s own installer instead.
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
qwt6.dll is an application library, not a Windows component. Copying it into a system directory can create version conflicts and make DLL search behavior less predictable. Copying from another computer is equally unsafe because the other computer may have a different application build or architecture.
Do not run regsvr32 as a general DLL fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly associated with self-registering components. Qwt is normally a private runtime library, so this command is not a repair method:
regsvr32 qwt6.dll
It may produce an error and will not make an incompatible Qt library compatible.
Do not delete system files blindly
If a duplicate appears in System32, SysWOW64, or another shared directory, do not delete it without confirming ownership and preserving a recovery path. Resolve the application installation and PATH conflict first.
If qwt6.dll still fails
Collect this information before contacting the application vendor or launcher support:
- The complete error text
- The executable path
- The path Windows reports for
qwt6.dll - The application name and version
- Whether it is x86, x64, or ARM64
- All duplicate
qwt6.dllpaths - Whether the error began after an upgrade, uninstall, restore, cleanup, or antivirus event
- Any other failing DLL names
If several Qt DLLs fail together, report that detail. It points toward mixed application versions or an incorrect search path. If a game or launcher reports the file, use its Verify integrity, Repair, or equivalent feature before attempting Windows-wide repairs.
The correct solution is to restore a matching set of files from the program that requested qwt6.dll, not to install a universal Windows copy.
