If R.E.P.O. keeps crashing on your Steam Deck, update SteamOS and restart first. Then close third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode, check for mods if the game gets stuck loading, and test a different compatibility tool only after recording your current setting. These are troubleshooting steps—not guaranteed fixes—because the right next step depends on whether the game fails at launch, during loading, or in a session.
Is R.E.P.O. compatible with Steam Deck?
Steam currently labels R.E.P.O. Playable on Steam Deck. That means the game works but may need manual configuration; it is not the same as Verified, Steam’s label for games that work well by default without additional modification. Compatibility labels can change, so check the live Steam listing for the current status.
R.E.P.O. is an Early Access game by semiwork, released on Steam on February 26, 2025. Its Steam technical issue page lists Windows 10 and 1 GB of available storage among the minimum requirements. Those are Windows requirements, not a specification for a native SteamOS version.
What to try first when R.E.P.O. crashes
Follow Steam’s general Steam Deck troubleshooting sequence before making several game-specific changes at once. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether it affected the problem.

- Install SteamOS updates and restart. Open Settings > System, install any available software updates, then restart the Deck. Steam recommends updates and a restart as initial steps for system instability.
- Close third-party apps. If Steam applications remain unstable, exit or disable third-party applications you installed through Desktop Mode, then restart the Deck. Steam’s guidance does not identify a particular add-on as the cause of your crash.
- Check whether mods are involved. If you use mods and R.E.P.O. gets stuck loading, remove them completely and test the game again. If it loads, update the mods and reintroduce them one at a time.
- Test a different compatibility tool. In your Steam Library, open R.E.P.O.’s Properties > Compatibility. Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then try the latest Proton version. Record the existing choice first so you can restore it if needed.
Steam’s steps are general troubleshooting advice, and trying the latest Proton is an option—not a confirmed fix for every R.E.P.O. crash. Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux; an individual Proton configuration can work differently from another.
Choose the next step by when the crash happens
If R.E.P.O. crashes on startup
After updating and restarting, try closing third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode. If the crash continues, test a different compatibility tool using the steps above. A Steam Community user reported that disabling Steam Overlay fixed that person’s startup crash, but this is a single anecdote, not an official or Steam Deck-verified remedy. Treat it as an optional experiment after the official steps, not a dependable fix.

If R.E.P.O. crashes or hangs while loading
If mods are installed, remove them and retest before changing other settings. In its Common Issues Troubleshooting post, semiwork says unsupported mods can cause the game to get stuck loading. That guidance is specific to stuck loading; it does not establish that mods cause every type of crash.
If R.E.P.O. crashes during a session
Start with the update, restart, and third-party-app checks. Then test the compatibility setting if the issue persists. Note whether it happens in solo play or co-op and what was happening just before the crash; those details can help support staff distinguish a repeatable problem from a one-off failure.

Why Proton reports and individual fixes may not apply
Changing Proton is a reasonable diagnostic step, but reports about one configuration do not establish a universal best version. For example, a Valve Proton issue report describes a Linux desktop user having trouble launching R.E.P.O. under Proton Experimental. It does not show that Proton Experimental is generally unsuitable or that the same issue affects Steam Deck.
Likewise, one player’s successful workaround does not identify the cause of another player’s crash. If a change appears to help, test it by repeating the same situation where the crash occurred rather than assuming it fixed every symptom.

What to include when asking for help
If the crash continues, gather the details below before contacting support. Steam’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide also directs users to Steam Support and the Steam Deck forums when its advice does not resolve instability.
- Whether the failure happens at launch, while loading, or during play.
- Whether it happens in solo play, co-op, or both.
- Your SteamOS and selected Proton versions.
- Whether you use mods or third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode.
- Any visible error message and the troubleshooting steps you have already tried.
