Its main challenge is not simply surviving monsters: your team must find valuable objects, carry them through hazardous environments using physics-based interaction, and extract enough value to meet the current quota.

What kind of game is R.E.P.O.?
R.E.P.O. combines online co-op horror with a physics-based extraction loop. Players enter haunted environments, search for valuable objects, pick them up with the game’s grabbing tool, and transport them back to an extraction point. The team must collect enough value to satisfy the quota while avoiding monsters and protecting its cargo.
Objects are not just inventory icons. Their weight, size, fragility, and awkward shapes affect how they can be moved. A valuable item may need to be rotated, carried through a narrow route, placed on the cart, or handled by more than one player. This creates a trade-off between moving quickly and bringing the haul back intact.
You can play by yourself, but the game supports a total lobby size of up to six players. Six-player co-op is the maximum rather than a requirement; smaller groups and solo players can also play.
First run: the basic extraction loop
- Complete the tutorial. Learn movement, grabbing, object rotation, the cart, extraction, and proximity voice chat before committing to a serious run.
- Begin at the truck. Each level starts with the team preparing at the truck and taking the cart into the environment.
- Search for valuable objects. Explore rooms and routes while keeping track of threats, teammates, and the safest way back.
- Move the haul carefully. Use the grabbing tool and cart to reduce unnecessary trips. Heavy or fragile objects can be difficult to handle, so controlled movement is usually safer than rushing.
- Reach the extraction pad. Bring enough value to the extraction area to meet the current quota.
- Return to the truck. Once the level is complete, regroup at the truck before moving on.
- Visit the Service Station. Spend earnings on upgrades between levels and treat the transition as an important progression checkpoint.
The central decision is whether an extra object is worth the risk of another trip. Carrying more loot can help meet the quota, but every additional journey exposes the team, the cargo, and the current run to more danger.

Beginner tips that make early runs easier
Run the tutorial before hosting a campaign
The tutorial is the quickest way to understand the game’s unusual physical interactions. Learn how grabbing and rotating work, how to use the cart, where extraction happens, and how proximity communication behaves before a group is relying on you to move valuable cargo.
Use the cart as a shared team resource
Keep the squad’s haul together where practical instead of making repeated individual trips. The cart can reduce backtracking, but it does not remove the need for careful positioning. Avoid forcing valuable objects through tight spaces at speed, and leave room for teammates to help or retreat.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCommunicate with short, location-based callouts
R.E.P.O. uses proximity voice chat, so teammates may not hear one another equally well from every distance. During a dangerous moment, say what matters: your location, the object involved, and the next action. For example: “Large item in the east room—bring the cart,” or “Monster near the hallway—fall back to the truck.”
A gaming headset with microphone is useful if you plan to rely on proximity voice chat and push-to-talk. It is not a required brand-specific accessory, and the game does not require a particular headset model.
Do not sprint everywhere
Beginner guidance for the current game recommends controlled movement and warns that sprinting can be loud and may attract monsters. Treat this as practical advice rather than a permanent universal rule: enemy behavior and balance can change while the game is in Early Access. Sprint when the situation calls for it, but do not make constant running your default while carrying valuable cargo.
Spend earnings between levels
The Service Station is where the team purchases upgrades and advances its progression. Avoid assuming that every action inside an unfinished level is safely preserved if someone quits or disconnects. When possible, finish the level and reach a recognized transition or checkpoint before leaving.

R.E.P.O. controls on keyboard and mouse
| Action | Typical input |
|---|---|
| Move | WASD |
| Jump | Space |
| Sprint | Shift |
| Crouch | Shown in the game’s current control settings |
| Grab and rotate objects | Mouse input |
| Push to talk | Assigned push-to-talk key |
Key assignments can be remapped through the game’s settings. Exact defaults and labels can change with updates, so check the current controls menu if an input does not behave as expected.
Can you use a controller?
Native controller support is not established by the official Steam listing. Community guides and Steam discussions describe using Steam Input to map controller buttons to keyboard-and-mouse actions. That is a workaround, not confirmation of official native controller support. If you use it, expect to spend time adjusting bindings for movement, grabbing, object rotation, crouching, sprinting, and push-to-talk.
Saving, checkpoints, and multiplayer progress
Save behavior is one of the areas readers should verify against the current build. Existing save guidance identifies the Service Station and level transitions as important checkpoints and reports that the multiplayer host owns the save. It also reports that a complete team wipe can delete the save. However, official Steam announcements have documented later changes involving save backups and exit behavior, so older absolute claims may no longer apply.
The safest practical approach is:
- Finish a level before quitting whenever possible.
- Reach the Service Station or another recognized progression transition before closing the game.
- Make sure the intended host is present when continuing a multiplayer campaign.
- Do not assume that an unfinished level, a disconnect, or a team wipe preserves all progress.
- Check the current Steam announcements and build notes before relying on a manual backup procedure.
Manual save backups require particular caution. The correct save location and behavior can change with updates, so do not copy an old path from an unrelated guide without confirming that it matches the current version of R.E.P.O. and your Windows installation.

That status affects how the information in this guide should be read:
- System requirements can be revised.
- Controls and menu labels can change.
- Monster behavior and the effects of sprinting can be rebalanced.
- Save, backup, and exit behavior can receive patches.
- Feature counts and progression systems should not be treated as final.
- Steam price and regional availability can change independently of the game’s mechanics.
Before publishing or troubleshooting a new installation, check the live Steam listing, the current game build, and recent developer announcements. This is especially important if you are comparing a new update with advice written for an earlier version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Not enough disk space: Confirm that the selected Steam library has at least 1 GB free, with additional room available for updates.
- Game will not install: Check that Steam is signed in to the account that owns the game and that the selected library is accessible.
- Performance concerns: Compare your PC with the minimum and recommended specifications, but do not interpret either table as a frame-rate guarantee.
- Voice chat problems: Check the selected Windows microphone, the game’s voice settings, the push-to-talk binding, and whether teammates are close enough for proximity chat.
- Controller problems: Treat Steam Input as a mapping workaround and review each binding rather than assuming native controller behavior.
- Lost multiplayer progress: Confirm who hosted the campaign, whether the team reached a recognized checkpoint, and whether a recent update changed save or backup behavior.
Should you download R.E.P.O. on Windows?
R.E.P.O. is a good fit if you want co-op horror built around communication, physics-based object handling, and risk-versus-reward extraction rather than a purely combat-focused experience. Its up-to-six-player structure makes it easy to play with a group, while the solo option is available for players who prefer a more demanding run.
The main qualification is Early Access. Buy and install it with the expectation that content, balancing, controls, progression, and save systems can evolve. For the safest start, install it through Steam, complete the tutorial, communicate with short callouts, move the cart and cargo deliberately, and reach a progression checkpoint before quitting.
