ra_player.dll is the RealAudio player plug-in used by IrfanView. If Windows says ra_player.dll is missing, cannot be found, or could not be loaded, restore the official IrfanView 32-bit plug-in rather than downloading a standalone DLL.
The file is not part of Windows, Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or a hardware driver. It belongs in IrfanView’s PlugIns folder and is intended for the 32-bit edition of IrfanView.

The most likely fix
Reinstall the official 32-bit IrfanView plug-in package.
The preferred package is:
iview475_plugins_setup.exe
The official media plug-in archive is:
iv_mmedia.zip
Download these only from the official IrfanView PlugIns page. Do not obtain ra_player.dll as an isolated file.
Install the plug-in package
- Close IrfanView.
- Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- On the Processes tab, check that IrfanView is no longer running.
- Open the official IrfanView PlugIns page in your browser.
- Download the 32-bit plug-in installer,
iview475_plugins_setup.exe. - Run the installer.
- When it asks for the installation directory, select the existing IrfanView-32 folder.
- Allow the installer to place the files in the IrfanView
PlugInsfolder. - If Windows blocks the installer from writing to Program Files, close the prompt, right-click the installer, select Run as administrator, and repeat the installation.
- Start IrfanView again.
- Open a known
.rafile.
If the file was missing because the plug-in was never installed, the error should disappear when IrfanView starts or when it attempts to open the Real Audio file.
Install from the ZIP archive
Use the ZIP package if you prefer a manual installation or the installer does not detect your IrfanView directory.
- Download
iv_mmedia.zipfrom the official IrfanView PlugIns page. - Right-click the ZIP file and select Extract All.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Locate the media plug-in files, including
ra_player.dll. - Open the folder where IrfanView-32 is installed.
- Open its
PlugInsfolder. - Copy the extracted media plug-in files into that folder.
- Approve the administrator prompt if Windows requests permission.
- Restart IrfanView and test a
.rafile.
Do not copy the DLL into a Windows folder just because your computer runs 64-bit Windows. The important match is between the IrfanView executable and its plug-ins.
Check whether IrfanView is 32-bit or 64-bit
The RealAudio plug-in is documented for IrfanView 32-bit. A 64-bit IrfanView installation cannot use a 32-bit plug-in simply because the file has been copied into its directory.
Check the installation you are actually launching:
- Start IrfanView.
- Open Help.
- Select About IrfanView.
- Check whether the program identifies itself as 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Close IrfanView.
- Confirm that the plug-ins are installed in that same edition’s
PlugInsfolder.
Keep the architectures separate:
- 32-bit IrfanView uses 32-bit plug-ins.
- 64-bit IrfanView uses 64-bit plug-ins.
- The RealAudio plug-in is documented for the 32-bit edition.
If you installed 64-bit IrfanView but specifically need RealAudio support, install the official desktop 32-bit edition and place the plug-ins in that installation. Do not mix files from the two editions.
Make sure you are not using the Microsoft Store edition
The Microsoft Store edition can use a protected application folder. IrfanView’s FAQ states that additional plug-ins cannot be added to the Store app folder in the normal way.
To check which edition you have:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for IrfanView.
- Check whether it was installed through the Microsoft Store.
- If the
PlugInsfolder cannot be modified, uninstall the Store edition if appropriate. - Install the desktop edition from the official IrfanView download source.
- Install the matching 32-bit plug-in package into its
PlugInsfolder.
Back up any custom IrfanView settings or plug-ins before removing an installation.
Repair an incomplete IrfanView installation
A missing file can result from an interrupted installation, an accidental deletion, cleanup software, or a damaged plug-in directory.

Reinstall over the existing installation
- Close IrfanView and check Task Manager for remaining IrfanView processes.
- Download the current IrfanView installer and the official plug-in installer.
- Right-click the IrfanView installer and select Run as administrator.
- Install it into the existing IrfanView directory.
- Run the plug-in installer as administrator.
- Select the matching IrfanView-32 directory.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Open IrfanView and test a
.rafile.
IrfanView supports installing over an older version. This normally restores missing program and plug-in files without requiring you to search for individual DLLs.
Perform a clean reinstall if the normal reinstall fails
Use this when the same installation repeatedly loses files or refuses to load plug-ins.
- Export or note any custom IrfanView settings.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find IrfanView and select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the old IrfanView installation folder remains.
- Remove the remaining folder only if you no longer need its custom files or settings.
- Install the official desktop IrfanView edition.
- Install the official plug-in package.
- Confirm that the plug-ins are in the new installation’s
PlugInsfolder. - Test IrfanView before restoring custom files.
If a clean installation works but the old installation did not, the original program directory was probably incomplete or damaged.
Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a plug-in after installation. Do not restore an unknown copy merely because its filename matches.
To inspect Microsoft Defender’s history:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving IrfanView or
ra_player.dll. - Expand the event and review its location and detection details.
- Restore the file only if it came from the official IrfanView package and you have verified that the detection is a false positive.
- Reinstall the official plug-in package if the file was removed.
- Run a Microsoft Defender scan before continuing.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause it to be detected again. If the detection returns, do not repeatedly restore the file or add broad exclusions. Verify the installer source and investigate the detection first.
Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM are not the primary repair for ra_player.dll. They repair Windows components and protected system files, while ra_player.dll belongs to IrfanView.
Use them when you also see missing Windows files, broken built-in apps, failures across several unrelated programs, or other evidence of system corruption.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the official IrfanView plug-in if
ra_player.dllis still missing.
DISM should be run before SFC because Microsoft’s repair guidance uses DISM to service the Windows image before checking protected system files.

ra_player.dll is not a display, audio, chipset, printer, or storage driver. Updating Device Manager drivers will normally have no effect on it.
You can still check drivers if you have separate hardware symptoms:

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider and driver date.
- Use Update Driver only when the hardware itself is malfunctioning.
- Restart Windows and retest the hardware.
Do not uninstall a working audio or graphics driver merely because IrfanView reports ra_player.dll.

Historical IrfanView plug-in documentation states that RealPlayer must be installed for Real Audio playback. That information is old, and a currently supported official RealPlayer package or modern Windows compatibility guarantee has not been established.
This matters mainly when:
ra_player.dllis present in the correctPlugInsfolder.- IrfanView starts normally.
- Opening a
.rafile still fails. - The error refers to a missing Real Audio component rather than
ra_player.dllitself.
Do not download an obsolete RealPlayer installer from an unofficial source. If Real Audio playback is not essential, use a currently supported media application or convert the file through a trusted, compatible workflow. If it is essential, inspect the complete error and verify compatibility before installing any legacy runtime.

Do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64
Those directories contain Windows shared components. Placing an application plug-in there can create confusion, permission problems, and architecture mismatches.
The correct location is the PlugIns folder belonging to the IrfanView installation that you launch.

Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download pages can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong architecture
- A different build from the one expected by IrfanView
- A file with missing dependencies
- A replacement that hides the real installation problem
The safe source is the official IrfanView plug-in package, not an isolated DLL.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair command
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary application plug-in may not provide that entry point.
Running a command such as this is generally inappropriate for ra_player.dll:
regsvr32 ra_player.dll
It can produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not mean the file needs a different registration command. Restore the plug-in through IrfanView instead.

Do not install Visual C++ packages at random
The current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable documentation covers applications built with supported Visual Studio toolchains. There is no evidence that installing or repairing a Visual C++ package specifically restores ra_player.dll.

Use a Visual C++ repair only when the error names a Visual C++ runtime DLL, such as a particular VCRUNTIME or MSVCP file.
Do not enable unrelated Windows Features
Windows Features such as .NET Framework components, legacy media features, or optional playback components are not a substitute for the IrfanView plug-in. Enable an optional feature only when another application explicitly requires it and the error identifies that feature.
If the error still appears
Work through these checks in order:
- Read the full error message and confirm that it names
ra_player.dll. - Check which executable generated the error.
- Confirm that the executable is IrfanView rather than another application.
- Confirm that you are launching the same IrfanView installation where you placed the plug-in.
- Check that the plug-in is in that installation’s
PlugInsfolder. - Confirm that the installation is the 32-bit edition.
- Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Reinstall the official IrfanView and plug-in packages as administrator.
- If the DLL exists but fails to load, inspect the complete error for another missing dependency.
- Use a dependency-analysis tool only to identify missing supporting components, not to replace random DLLs.
System Restore is reasonable when the problem began immediately after a software installation, update, or security action and reinstalling IrfanView did not help.

- Start the restore only if you understand what software changes will be reversed.
System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can remove or roll back installed programs and system settings.
FAQ
Is ra_player.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an IrfanView RealAudio plug-in. Windows Update, SFC, and DISM do not normally restore it.
Is ra_player.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
IrfanView’s official plug-in documentation identifies the RealAudio plug-in as 32-bit only. Use it with IrfanView-32 and do not mix it with the 64-bit plug-in directory.
Where should ra_player.dll be located?
It should be in the PlugIns folder inside the IrfanView installation. It should not normally be copied to System32 or SysWOW64.

Which package restores it?
Use the official 32-bit plug-in installer, iview475_plugins_setup.exe, or the media archive iv_mmedia.zip.
Does reinstalling Windows repair this file?
Usually not. Reinstalling Windows does not address the source application’s missing plug-in and is excessive for this error. Repair IrfanView first.
Why does IrfanView still fail when the DLL exists?
The DLL may be in the wrong plug-in folder, paired with the wrong IrfanView architecture, quarantined or damaged, or unable to load a historical Real Audio dependency. Check the full error message before replacing anything.
Should I register the file?
Generally no. ra_player.dll is an application plug-in, not a typical self-registering COM component. regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair utility.
What if I installed IrfanView from the Microsoft Store?
The Store app folder may prevent manual plug-in installation. Use the official desktop edition if you need to add the RealAudio plug-in.
