If your racing wheel is not working in a Steam game, check it in three layers: whether it powers on and connects, whether its manufacturer software and Windows recognize it, and whether the specific game supports it and has its controls mapped. A wheel missing from Steam’s controller list does not, by itself, prove the hardware is faulty.
1. Check power and startup calibration
Start with the wheel, not Steam. Confirm its power supply is connected and watch for the startup movement or calibration expected for your model. If it does not power on or calibrate, check the model’s setup instructions and power connection before changing game settings.
For the Thrustmaster T248, the manufacturer says incomplete or absent calibration can sometimes be related to power. Its guidance suggests testing another outlet, USB port, or cable and, if possible, another platform. See Thrustmaster’s T248 support instructions.
2. Check the mode switch and USB connection
Connect the wheel directly to the computer while diagnosing it. Try another USB port, and temporarily disconnect unnecessary USB devices if the wheel behaves intermittently or its behavior changes when other devices are connected.

For a Thrustmaster T300
Thrustmaster says the T300’s switch must be set to PC for detection by a PC. Try another port, including a rear port on a desktop if available, and avoid USB hubs or extension cables during testing. Its T300 support page also covers the model’s PC setup.
If USB behavior changes with other devices
Steam’s general USB troubleshooting guide—not a racing-wheel-specific guide—recommends testing another port and temporarily disconnecting other devices. If that helps, reconnect devices one at a time to identify whether one causes the problem. 3. Confirm that the manufacturer software and Windows see the wheel
Logitech G923, G29, and G920
Open Logitech G HUB and check whether it detects the wheel and receives input. Then use Windows’ native controller module to confirm the wheel appears and responds there. Logitech’s troubleshooting guide for the G923, G29, and G920 says its former Steam troubleshooting step is “not applicable as Steam no longer detects wheels.” That statement is specific to Logitech’s guide and these models; it means Steam’s controller list alone is not a conclusive hardware test. Thrustmaster wheels
Check the driver and firmware guidance for your exact model rather than installing software intended for a similar-looking wheel. Thrustmaster’s T248 instructions call for the latest available PC driver. Its T300 documentation says firmware may be needed for optimal operation in a compatible PC game.

4. Check whether the game supports the wheel and map its controls
If the manufacturer utility or Windows sees the wheel but one game does not, the problem may be game-specific. Check the game publisher’s supported-device information for your exact wheel, then open the game’s controls or options and bind the steering axis, pedals, and buttons. A wheel can be detected by the computer yet remain unusable in a game until its controls are assigned.
Thrustmaster recommends manually mapping T248 buttons and axes in PC game settings, but cautions that it cannot guarantee its wheels will work with every PC game. Its T300 support page likewise explains that PC game compatibility depends on which devices the publisher chose to support. These are model-specific examples, not a universal compatibility promise.

Some game support pages also advise disconnecting unnecessary controllers and provide game-specific binding or diagnostic-log steps. Follow those directions only for the game they address; they are not universal Steam settings. Do not assume there is one Steam Input configuration that fixes every racing wheel and game.

Consider a hardware fault only after checking power and startup behavior, USB connection, any model-specific mode switch, manufacturer drivers or firmware, recognition by the manufacturer utility and Windows, and the game’s support and bindings. If the wheel fails to respond in its manufacturer utility and in Windows on another suitable connection or computer, consult the manufacturer’s model-specific support guidance.

Logitech describes registry editing as an advanced measure for G923/G29/G920 calibration problems or a blank Windows Controller Properties test page—not as a first step for a wheel missing from a Steam game. Avoid casual registry changes; if Logitech’s instructions point to that procedure, follow the guide for the exact model carefully.
What to check before replacing a wheel
A replacement is not the first fix for a wheel that is absent from one game. If you are comparing alternatives because the current wheel is confirmed faulty or unsupported, verify compatibility for the specific game and the PC version of the wheel, check the manufacturer’s driver and firmware support, and confirm that the pedals and any required accessories are included and compatible. Manufacturer support for a wheel does not establish that every game supports it.
