The GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU is usually the better choice, especially the 6GB version. It generally delivers higher 1080p performance, better ray tracing, DLSS support, and broader compatibility with creator software. The Radeon RX 6500M is worth considering when its laptop is substantially cheaper or has clearly better CPU, cooling, memory, display, or build quality.
There is one important warning: “RTX 3050 Laptop GPU” does not describe a single fixed configuration. Laptop versions range from 4GB to 6GB of VRAM and roughly 35W to 80W of graphics power, so the exact laptop matters almost as much as the GPU name.

Gaming performance at 1080p
The RTX 3050 generally wins in rasterized gaming, although the gap depends on its power limit, memory version, cooling, CPU, and RAM configuration. Comparison databases point in the same direction but are not identical-laptop laboratory tests. PassMark’s aggregate comparison places the RTX 3050 4GB ahead of the RX 6500M, while NanoReview reports a directional advantage for the RTX 3050 across its selected 1080p game suite.
Notebookcheck’s laptop comparison illustrates the variation. In one Final Fantasy XV high-setting test, it lists approximately 42fps for the RX 6500M and 49fps for the RTX 3050 6GB. In one Dota 2 test, the figures are approximately 89fps and 122fps respectively. These are examples from different laptop systems, not guaranteed results for every model. See the full Notebookcheck comparison.
| Game category | RX 6500M | RTX 3050 |
|---|---|---|
| Esports at 1080p | Generally good with a suitable CPU | Good to very good |
| Older AAA games | Medium-to-high settings are usually realistic | High settings are more achievable |
| Modern AAA games | Medium settings with selective compromises | Medium-to-high settings, depending on TGP |
| Ray-traced games | Usually a poor value at this performance level | More usable with reduced settings and DLSS |
| Heavy texture workloads | Limited by 4GB VRAM | 6GB version is preferable |
For 1440p gaming, neither GPU should be treated as a strong native-resolution option. Reduced settings and upscaling may help, but these are primarily 1080p laptop GPUs.

VRAM: the biggest practical difference
Both the RX 6500M and RTX 3050 4GB can run into texture limits in newer games. Symptoms may include stuttering, texture-quality compromises, or a need to reduce other settings even when average frame rate appears acceptable.
The RTX 3050 6GB provides useful capacity headroom for newer games, higher texture settings, mods, and some GPU-accelerated creative workloads. It is not automatically faster in every situation, however: power limits and cooling still matter. Treat 6GB as less constrained, not future-proof.
Ray tracing, DLSS, and FSR
The RTX 3050 includes second-generation RT cores, third-generation Tensor cores, DLSS, Reflex, DirectX 12 Ultimate support, and NVIDIA’s hardware encoder. These features make it the more versatile choice when a game or application supports them.
DLSS can render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct the image using NVIDIA’s AI-assisted technology. The RX 6500M can use AMD FSR in games that implement it. FSR is generally integrated by the game rather than requiring proprietary hardware; quality and availability depend on the specific implementation. AMD explains its support model on its FSR information page.
DLSS should not automatically be declared superior to FSR in every game. The practical advantage is that DLSS, RT acceleration, and Tensor hardware give the RTX 3050 a stronger feature set for supported titles. When comparing performance, distinguish native rendering from DLSS or FSR results and identify the upscaling mode.

Compare the complete machines, not only their graphics chips. Check:
- RTX 3050 VRAM: confirm whether it has 4GB or 6GB.
- TGP or power limit: identify the actual wattage, not just the product name.
- Cooling: weak cooling can prevent the GPU from sustaining its rated performance.
- CPU: especially important in esports games and at high refresh rates.
- RAM: 16GB dual-channel is much preferable to 8GB single-channel.
- MUX switch or Advanced Optimus: these can reduce the performance cost of routing frames through integrated graphics.
- Display: check resolution, refresh rate, brightness, and color coverage.
- Storage and upgrades: verify SSD capacity and whether RAM or storage can be replaced.
- Battery and build quality: compare the complete laptop, not nominal GPU wattage.
Lenovo’s official LOQ specification document demonstrates why exact configuration pages matter: GPU power and related specifications can depend on the system and power adapter.
Do not infer battery life from GPU wattage alone. Integrated-graphics switching, screen brightness and refresh rate, CPU efficiency, battery capacity, power profiles, and background applications all affect runtime. A lower-power RX 6500M does not automatically mean a longer-lasting laptop.

Should you avoid both in 2026?
Usually, these are older-stock, used, or refurbished options by 2026. If an RTX 3050 or RX 6500M laptop costs close to a newer model, compare RTX 4050, RTX 4060, or Radeon RX 7600M-class laptops before buying. NVIDIA’s RTX 40-series page and AMD’s Radeon laptop portfolio provide the relevant current product families.
An RTX 4050 laptop is generally the more sensible new-purchase benchmark, while an RTX 4060 or RX 7600M-class system can offer substantially more performance and memory. RTX 50-series laptops are newer still, but may not fit a budget comparison.
For used or refurbished machines, verify the exact SKU, GPU memory, TGP, CPU, RAM configuration, display, battery condition, warranty, return policy, seller reputation, shipping, and taxes. Do not pay a premium for the word “RTX” without checking the actual configuration.
Final verdict
The RTX 3050 wins this comparison, and the RTX 3050 6GB is the version to target. It is generally faster, handles modern games more comfortably, offers better ray tracing and upscaling support, and has wider creator-software compatibility. The RX 6500M remains a reasonable budget choice only when its laptop is meaningfully cheaper or substantially better equipped overall.
