Radeon RX 9070 XT BIOS Flash Delivers a Reported 25% Synthetic Boost—but Not in Games

A reported 25% 3DMark gain came after BIOS flashing and extra tuning; the gaming uplift was closer to 8–12%, with substantial compatibility and hardware risks.

A PowerColor RX 9070 Reaper reportedly scored about 25% higher in a tuned 3DMark Steel Nomad run after being flashed with an RX 9070 XT BIOS. The BIOS flash alone accounted for a smaller gain, and the card’s reported Cyberpunk 2077 improvement was about 11%. The modification does not unlock the RX 9070 XT’s additional compute units, and it carries real risks to the card and its warranty.

What the RX 9070 BIOS-flash test actually showed

In a report published on September 21, 2025, Tom’s Hardware summarized an enthusiast’s test of a PowerColor RX 9070 Reaper flashed with an RX 9070 XT vBIOS. The card was benchmarked first, then tuned further for voltage and memory clock. The reported 25% increase compares the final tuned result with the original stock score; it is not the gain from the BIOS flash by itself. Tom’s Hardware’s report links to the community test and its flashing-tool discussion.

Configuration 3DMark Steel Nomad score Change from stock
RX 9070, stock Approximately 5,821 Baseline
RX 9070 with XT BIOS Approximately 6,461 Approximately 11%
XT BIOS plus additional tuning Approximately 7,277 Approximately 25%

These are approximate results from one enthusiast’s card and benchmark run, not a controlled test across multiple RX 9070 models. Silicon quality, cooling, board design, BIOS compatibility and tuning all affect what another card might achieve.

Gaming gains were smaller than the headline

In the same report, Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p rose from approximately 70 FPS on the original undervolted configuration to approximately 78 FPS after the flash and tuning—about an 11% increase. Tom’s Hardware characterized the gaming uplift as roughly 8–12%. That is a more useful expectation than applying the synthetic benchmark’s 25% result to games generally.

Game engine, resolution, ray tracing workload, cooling and power limits influence results. The report does not establish a universal gaming gain for RX 9070 owners.

Why an XT BIOS can raise performance—and what it cannot change

A video BIOS (vBIOS) sets board-level operating parameters, including power and clock behavior. Flashing a different vBIOS may allow a higher power limit or more boost-clock headroom. The reported user also changed voltage and memory settings after flashing, so the best score reflects both firmware and additional overclocking.

Firmware cannot restore compute units that the RX 9070 does not have. AMD lists 56 compute units and 3,584 stream processors for the RX 9070, versus 64 compute units and 4,096 stream processors for the RX 9070 XT. The two cards share RDNA 4, 16GB of GDDR6 memory and a 256-bit memory interface, but they are not the same GPU configuration. AMD’s specifications show the differences:

Specification Radeon RX 9070 Radeon RX 9070 XT
Compute units 56 64
Stream processors 3,584 4,096
Boost clock, up to 2,520 MHz 2,970 MHz
Total board power 220 W 304 W
Recommended PSU 650 W 750 W
Memory 16GB GDDR6, 256-bit 16GB GDDR6, 256-bit

The practical description is a power-unlocked, overclocked RX 9070—not an RX 9070 XT. It does not gain the XT’s extra compute units, guaranteed clocks, board design, cooler, voltage-regulator capacity or factory validation.

More power brings costs and uncertainty

An earlier Asus Prime RX 9070 cross-flash cited by Tom’s Hardware reportedly reached approximately 317 W, compared with the RX 9070’s official 220 W board-power rating, and boosted to approximately 3.1 GHz. That is one enthusiast result, not a prediction for every card. It illustrates why an XT-style power envelope can impose greater demands on the card’s power delivery, connectors, cooling and system power supply.

Higher power can mean higher GPU, hotspot, memory and VRM temperatures, more fan noise and thermal throttling if cooling is insufficient. The cited results do not establish sustained temperatures, noise, or performance-per-watt across cards. A high benchmark score alone cannot show that a card is suitable for long gaming sessions.

Stability is another unknown. A run that completes once does not rule out driver timeouts, black screens, crashes, visual artifacts, memory errors, inconsistent scores, resume-from-sleep failures or boot-time display problems. RX 9070 samples also differ in how well they tolerate higher clocks and voltage.

Cross-flashing can brick a card

The correct firmware depends on the precise board model and revision, memory configuration, power-delivery design and BIOS-chip layout. A similar product name is not enough to establish compatibility, and an XT BIOS from another board partner may be a poor match. AMD supporting both cards in the same Radeon driver family does not mean AMD or a board partner approves cross-flashing.

An incompatible or interrupted flash can leave a card unable to initialize. Recovery may require a secondary BIOS, another graphics device or integrated graphics, an external SPI programmer, or specialist access to the flash chip. Recovery is not guaranteed. A physical dual-BIOS switch can help, but it is not a substitute for verified compatibility and a recovery plan.

Warranty consequences depend on the manufacturer’s written terms and the purchase region. Tom’s Hardware warns that flashing another model’s BIOS may void warranty coverage and can brick the card; do not assume either that every cross-flash automatically voids every warranty or that a vendor will cover resulting damage. Check the specific board partner’s terms. AMD’s Radeon user-guide page links to warranty resources, but it is not a replacement for the RX 9070 board maker’s terms.

A safer progression for RX 9070 owners

For most owners, test the card’s limits without replacing its firmware. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition supports the RX 9070 series through AMD’s driver packages; the shared driver support is not approval for a cross-flash. AMD’s Adrenalin 25.3.1 release notes added support for both RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. A later RX 9070-series driver page lists version 25.10.2 for Windows 10 and Windows 11: AMD RX 9070-series driver notes.

  1. Record a stock baseline. Note benchmark scores, game performance, temperatures and fan behavior before changing settings.
  2. Try official software tuning. Adjust one setting at a time—such as a modest power-limit change, GPU or memory clock, undervolt, or fan curve—using AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. Revert settings if the card becomes unstable.
  3. Check sustained behavior. Test games and workloads you actually use, not only a short benchmark. Watch temperatures, noise, crashes and repeat-run consistency.
  4. Consider firmware modification only if experienced. Establish the exact board and revision, confirm a genuinely matching firmware source, save the original firmware, and have a workable recovery method before proceeding. The community method cited in the report is specific to its hardware and is not a universal flashing recipe.
  5. Stop when the trade-off is poor. If temperatures, noise, stability or power use are unacceptable, return to stock settings rather than chasing a score.

An undervolt may help a card sustain higher clocks under its existing thermal and power constraints, though results vary. A factory-overclocked RX 9070 keeps a board-specific firmware and validation path, but models still differ in power limits and cooling. Neither software tuning nor a BIOS flash can add the RX 9070 XT’s missing compute units.

Who should consider the modification?

Cross-flashing is best viewed as an enthusiast experiment for someone prepared to accept firmware, thermal and warranty risk—not a routine upgrade recommendation. Before considering it, an owner should be able to verify board compatibility, manage power and cooling, monitor stability, and recover the card if it fails to boot. A dual-BIOS design and recovery hardware can reduce some recovery risk, but cannot make an incompatible flash safe.

For most players who want dependable XT-level hardware, buying an RX 9070 XT is the straightforward route. For an existing RX 9070 owner seeking a modest uplift, official Adrenalin tuning is the lower-risk place to start.
