What’s actually slowing this PC down?

It depends on the game and timeline. In Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, Raiden merges his powers with Liu Kang, creating Fire God Liu Kang. In the older Mortal Kombat Trilogy storyline, Raiden takes mortal form and risks his immortality. Mortal Kombat 1 takes place in a reborn universe, where the official material reviewed does not confirm that its Raiden permanently loses his powers.
The short answer
There is no single, series-wide event in which Raiden simply loses all his powers. Mortal Kombat has used multiple continuities, and each version gives the thunder god a different outcome.

- Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath: Raiden merges his powers with Liu Kang. Liu Kang becomes Fire God Liu Kang, while the story presents the change as a power merger rather than a clearly stated permanent loss of every supernatural ability Raiden has ever possessed.
- Mortal Kombat Trilogy: Raiden transforms into a mortal warrior to fight in the merged realms. The story connects that choice with giving up, or placing at risk, his immortality.
- Mortal Kombat 1: Raiden belongs to a reimagined New Era created by Fire God Liu Kang. Earlier games cannot automatically establish what happens to this version, and the official game pages reviewed do not confirm a permanent loss of his powers.
So the most accurate answer is: Raiden’s status changes by continuity; Aftermath shows a merger, Trilogy shows a mortal form, and Mortal Kombat 1 leaves permanent power loss unconfirmed.

The name “Raiden” refers to different versions of the character across Mortal Kombat’s timelines. Treating every game as one uninterrupted biography creates contradictions. A scene in an older timeline can show Raiden becoming mortal, while a later reboot can introduce a different Raiden whose history and status have been rewritten.

That is why answers such as “yes, Raiden loses his powers” or “no, he never does” are too broad. The useful question is: Which Raiden, in which game, and what exactly changes? The evidence distinguishes between three different ideas:
- A power merger: Raiden’s powers combine with Liu Kang’s and contribute to the formation of Fire God Liu Kang.
- Mortal transformation: Raiden changes from an immortal divine being into a mortal warrior.
- Permanent power loss: a claim that a particular version can never recover or use supernatural powers again. The reviewed official material does not establish that conclusion for New Era Raiden.
Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath: Raiden merges his powers with Liu Kang
What the ending establishes
In the story of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, Raiden merges his powers with Liu Kang. Tyler Lansdown, a Community Manager at NetherRealm Studios, described the outcome in an Xbox Wire story-spoiler passage dated May 6, 2020: “Raiden merges his powers with Liu Kang to form Fire God Liu Kang.”
That wording matters. It establishes a combination or transfer of power into Liu Kang’s new divine identity. It does not, by itself, say that every version of Raiden across the franchise permanently loses all supernatural capability, nor does it rewrite the events of games in other continuities.

Does Raiden give Liu Kang his powers?
For Aftermath, “Raiden gives Liu Kang his powers” is a reasonable shorthand, provided it is tied to that story. The more precise description is that Raiden merges his powers with Liu Kang, producing Fire God Liu Kang. The event is part of the ending’s resolution and should not be generalized into a rule for every Mortal Kombat timeline.

Does this make Raiden permanently powerless?
The cited statement confirms the merger, not a franchise-wide declaration that Raiden can never possess supernatural power again. It is therefore safer to say that Aftermath changes the relationship between Raiden’s power and Liu Kang’s divine form than to claim that the character is permanently powerless in every subsequent interpretation.
Mortal Kombat Trilogy: Raiden becomes mortal
The older storyline’s change
The Mortal Kombat Trilogy character text describes Raiden transforming into a mortal warrior so he can fight alongside human allies in the merged realms. Its ending explains that he must take mortal form to exist in those combined realms.
This is a different event from the Aftermath merger. The key change is Raiden’s status: he gives up, or places at risk, his immortality in order to participate as a mortal fighter. That does not mean the Trilogy story is describing Liu Kang receiving Raiden’s powers. It is describing Raiden changing his own form and condition.
What “mortal” means in this context
“Mortal” refers to Raiden’s existence and immortality, not simply whether he can still fight. The Trilogy account presents a divine character accepting mortal limitations so he can operate in the merged realms. It is therefore accurate to say that this version of Raiden becomes mortal, but it is not accurate to transfer that statement automatically to Raiden in Mortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat 1: a separate New Era
Why earlier outcomes do not settle the question
Warner Bros. Games describes Mortal Kombat 1 as a reborn universe created by Fire God Liu Kang. The game presents reimagined versions of familiar characters, including Raiden. This is a distinct continuity rather than a simple continuation in which every prior event carries forward unchanged.
Because the setting is reimagined, the Trilogy transformation and the Aftermath merger cannot be used as proof of New Era Raiden’s final power status. They belong to different story arrangements.
What is and is not confirmed
The official Mortal Kombat 1 overview and FAQ establish that Raiden is one of the reimagined characters in the New Era. The reviewed pages do not provide enough character-specific narrative detail to prove that this Raiden permanently loses his powers.

That leaves a careful conclusion: New Era Raiden’s long-term power status is not confirmed by those official pages. Saying he definitely lost his powers would go beyond what they establish. Saying his version is identical to an older Raiden would also ignore the game’s explicit premise that the universe has been reborn.

Raiden’s outcomes compared

| Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath | Raiden merges his powers with Liu Kang. | The merger forms Fire God Liu Kang, according to Tyler Lansdown’s May 6, 2020 Xbox Wire story-spoiler passage. | It establishes the merger in that story, not a universal claim that every Raiden permanently loses all powers. |
| Mortal Kombat Trilogy | Raiden takes mortal form to fight in the merged realms. | The character text and ending describe a mortal transformation and the loss or risk of immortality. | It establishes the Trilogy version’s mortal condition, not the status of later reboot versions. |

How to answer the common questions
“Does Raiden lose his powers?”
Answer with the game name. In Aftermath, his powers merge with Liu Kang’s. In Mortal Kombat Trilogy, he becomes mortal and risks his immortality. In Mortal Kombat 1, the available official material does not confirm a permanent loss.
“Does Raiden give Liu Kang his powers?”
In Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, Raiden merges his powers with Liu Kang, forming Fire God Liu Kang. That is the precise version-specific answer.
“Does Raiden become mortal in Mortal Kombat?”
He becomes mortal in the Mortal Kombat Trilogy storyline described by the character biography and ending. That statement should not be presented as the status of every Raiden, particularly the reimagined New Era version in Mortal Kombat 1.
“Is Raiden powerless in Mortal Kombat 1?”
The official pages reviewed do not confirm that. They establish a new universe and a reimagined Raiden, but they do not provide enough detail to prove permanent power loss.

A continuity-first way to read Raiden’s story
- Identify the title. Do not begin with the character’s name alone; start with Aftermath, Trilogy, or Mortal Kombat 1.
- Identify the type of change. Ask whether the scene describes a merger, a transfer, a mortal transformation, or something else.
- Separate immortality from every other ability. The Trilogy evidence specifically concerns mortal form and immortality. It should not be expanded into an unsupported claim about every power Raiden might have.
- Check whether the timeline was rebooted. The New Era premise means older events are not automatic evidence about New Era characters.
- Use “unconfirmed” when the official material is silent. For Mortal Kombat 1, that is more accurate than filling the gap with an assumption from another game.
Why contradictory answers appear online
Most disagreement comes from combining separate story contexts. One explanation quotes the Aftermath merger, another recalls Trilogy’s mortal Raiden, and a third treats Mortal Kombat 1 as if it were a direct continuation. Each may be referring to a real event, but the events do not describe the same continuity.
Another source of confusion is the phrase “lose his powers.” It can mean at least three different things: Raiden’s power becoming part of Liu Kang’s divine form, Raiden surrendering immortality by taking mortal form, or a permanent inability to use supernatural powers. The available evidence supports the first two in their specific stories; it does not establish the third for New Era Raiden.
Bottom line by game
- Playing or discussing Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath? Say that Raiden merges his powers with Liu Kang, creating Fire God Liu Kang.
- Discussing Mortal Kombat Trilogy? Say that Raiden takes mortal form and gives up or risks his immortality to fight in the merged realms.
- Discussing Mortal Kombat 1? Say that this is a reimagined New Era and that permanent power loss for its Raiden is not confirmed by the official pages reviewed.
The definitive answer is therefore continuity-dependent, not simply yes or no.
