Yes, memory is getting more expensive and harder to source—but “AI bought all the RAM” is too simple. The real problem is that Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron are prioritizing higher-margin HBM, server DRAM, and enterprise SSDs for artificial-intelligence infrastructure. That redirects manufacturing capacity and purchasing power away from conventional PC memory, phones, laptops, consoles, and other electronics.
The short version
Consumer memory is under genuine supply pressure. TrendForce estimated that DRAM industry contract prices rose 81% quarter over quarter in the first quarter of 2026, while inventories remained very low and suppliers prioritized high-capacity server memory. That figure describes contract pricing across the industry, not an identical increase for every retail RAM kit.

The squeeze is more serious than the warning signs reported in late 2025, but it is not proof that every device will immediately become unaffordable. Effects depend on the memory type, a manufacturer’s inventory, contracts, product margins, region, and whether a device uses upgradeable or soldered memory.
TrendForce’s analysis, Samsung’s second-quarter 2026 outlook, and results from Micron and SK hynix all point to strong AI-related demand. Tightness could continue into 2027, although reports about specific capacity allocations are industry claims rather than a confirmed industry-wide sellout.

What “RAM” means in this story
Several different technologies are being discussed under the same word:
- Commodity DRAM: DDR4 and DDR5 used in desktop PCs, laptops, and embedded systems.
- LPDDR: low-power memory commonly used in phones, tablets, and thin laptops.
- Server DRAM: high-capacity registered memory used by data centers.
- HBM: stacked, extremely high-bandwidth memory installed next to AI accelerators and GPUs.
- NAND flash: a different type of memory used in SSDs and other storage products.
HBM is not interchangeable with a desktop DIMM. An HBM shortage does not directly mean that a desktop RAM slot is empty. The connection is that HBM is more complex and resource-intensive to manufacture, competing with conventional DRAM for wafer capacity, packaging, equipment, and engineering attention. One analyst estimate cited in the original reporting suggested HBM can consume more than three times the wafer capacity of standard DRAM; that is an estimate, not a universal engineering constant.
Why AI is squeezing ordinary memory
- AI training and inference require huge amounts of high-speed memory.
- AI accelerators use HBM, while the surrounding servers require large quantities of conventional DRAM.
- HBM and advanced server products are more complex and generally more valuable than ordinary consumer modules.
- Cloud providers and other large AI customers offer stronger, more predictable demand.
- Manufacturers therefore allocate more capacity to HBM, high-capacity server DRAM, and enterprise SSDs.
- Consumer memory receives a smaller or less strategically important share of available supply.
AI is a major structural driver, not necessarily the only cause. Memory manufacturing is cyclical, suppliers are still responding to earlier oversupply, and new fabs or packaging capacity take years—not weeks—to become meaningful sources of supply.

The three-company bottleneck
Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron dominate global DRAM production. The exact combined share changes by quarter and research firm; the original late-2025 reporting cited roughly 93% in the second quarter of 2025. That concentration gives the market’s largest suppliers substantial pricing power.
It also explains why a capacity-allocation decision can spread quickly through the PC market. If the major producers favor HBM and server products, module makers and system builders have fewer conventional chips to purchase. A concentrated market can amplify a shortage, but higher prices alone do not establish illegal collusion or price fixing. The defensible conclusion is that suppliers are prioritizing higher-margin customers in a constrained market.
The financial results show who is benefiting. SK hynix reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of 79.3187 trillion won and operating profit of 60.5426 trillion won on a K-IFRS basis, attributing its performance to AI-server products, HBM, and higher DRAM and NAND prices. Samsung said server DRAM, enterprise SSD, and HBM demand should continue accelerating in the second half of 2026. Micron reported record fiscal-third-quarter 2026 results and described memory as strategically important in the AI era.

How the squeeze reaches gamers and other consumers
Desktop and gaming PCs
This is the most visible impact. DDR5 prices rose sharply from their earlier lows. The original Verge report documented 32GB DDR5 kits moving from roughly $125–$135 in September 2025 to about $390–$428 in December 2025. Those are historical examples, not current September 2026 retail prices.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEven if the CPU and graphics card remain unchanged, a new build can cost more. System integrators may raise prices, reduce the included memory, or substitute a slower configuration. High-capacity kits are particularly exposed because workstation and server demand competes for similar supply.
Laptops
Manufacturers can respond by raising prices, shipping lower-memory configurations, or offsetting memory costs with cheaper displays, batteries, or other components. Soldered memory creates an additional problem: a cheaper base model may be a poor long-term purchase if its RAM cannot be replaced or expanded.
The late-2025 reporting identified cost pressure affecting companies including Dell, HP, Lenovo, Framework, CyberPowerPC, and Maingear. That does not mean each company applies the same surcharge or has the same inventory position.
Smartphones
Phones may see higher component costs, more expensive flagship configurations, or fewer inexpensive models with generous RAM. IDC was cited as forecasting weaker smartphone sales and higher average prices because of the memory shortage; that was a forecast, not a final result.
SSDs
SSDs use NAND, not DRAM, so SSD inflation should not automatically be called RAM inflation. However, the same major memory companies also produce NAND, and AI data centers are buying substantial enterprise storage. NAND supply, enterprise demand, and DRAM supply are related through the manufacturers and broader capital-allocation decisions, but they remain separate technologies.

Consoles, handhelds, and embedded devices
Consoles, handheld PCs, Raspberry Pi-class computers, cameras, televisions, cars, and other embedded products can face higher manufacturing costs. Thin-margin products are especially vulnerable. But the effect varies widely with contracts, inventories, memory type, and product design; the shortage does not guarantee an identical price increase across every category.
Who benefits and who loses?
Memory manufacturers benefit from stronger pricing and a product mix weighted toward HBM and server memory. Cloud providers and hyperscalers get priority because their orders are large, predictable, and tied to lucrative AI expansion. Some AI infrastructure companies can absorb higher component costs more easily than a budget PC buyer.
Budget gamers, small system builders, phone makers, laptop buyers, and upgrade-dependent consumers have less bargaining power. They may face higher prices, reduced configurations, delayed launches, or fewer choices. People with soldered memory are particularly exposed because they cannot simply buy a cheaper module later.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy RAM now?
Do not panic-buy, but do not assume prices will quickly return to their old lows either. Use the workload rather than scarcity anxiety as the deciding factor.
Buy now when:
- Your current system is paging heavily, crashing, or failing to run required games or applications.
- You need the machine for work, school, creative production, virtual machines, or local AI workloads.
- You have a compatible platform and find a reputable, tested kit at a defensible price.
- You need a specific capacity that may become difficult to source later.
Wait when:
- The upgrade is discretionary and your current system has enough memory.
- You are considering an expensive high-capacity kit only for vague future-proofing.
- You expect to replace the entire platform soon or move from DDR4 to DDR5.
- The price is dramatically above recent norms or the seller has unclear warranty and return terms.
Choose capacity by workload
- 16GB: workable for basic use, but increasingly limiting for heavy multitasking and some games.
- 32GB: a sensible mainstream target for many new gaming and productivity PCs.
- 64GB or more: useful for content creation, virtual machines, large projects, professional software, and demanding local workloads.
- 96GB or 128GB-plus: specialist territory that should be justified by a real workload.
More RAM cannot repair a weak GPU, slow CPU, poor cooling, inadequate storage, or inefficient software. Virtual memory can prevent some crashes, but swapping to an SSD is far slower than using physical RAM and is not a replacement for it. Local AI workloads may also be limited by GPU VRAM, storage bandwidth, model size, or quantization—not system RAM alone.

Several developments could ease prices: new fab and packaging capacity, better yields, weaker AI capital spending, demand destruction from expensive hardware, or a normal semiconductor downcycle. Conversely, continued hyperscaler investment could keep HBM and server demand elevated through 2027.
The timing is uncertain because supply expansion is slow while consumer demand can fall quickly. If PC and phone buyers delay upgrades, retail prices may stop rising even while contract markets remain tight. That would not necessarily mean the underlying capacity problem had disappeared.
Bottom line
RAM is the visible symptom, not the whole disease. AI is absorbing a disproportionate share of memory investment and production capacity, especially in HBM, server DRAM, and enterprise storage. That makes conventional memory more expensive and gives consumers fewer attractive configurations—but it does not mean AI is literally consuming every desktop DIMM or that every electronic device will rise in price at the same rate.
For gamers, the sensible response is need-based buying: upgrade when insufficient memory is hurting performance or usability, verify compatibility, and avoid paying a huge premium for unnecessary capacity or cosmetic features. If your system works today, waiting is still a valid choice.
