A random.dll error means a particular application is missing, rejecting, or unable to load the dependency shipped with that program.
What this file actually does
The name random.dll is not unique. Different applications can use it for different functions, and the filename alone cannot establish its publisher, version, architecture, checksum, or correct download source.

The strongest documented match is RandomDLL.dll, a dependency used by some Win64 applications built with the TMS Cryptography Pack. TMS documents it for applications using older RAD Studio versions and records cases where the file was omitted from earlier packages or needed to be placed beside the application executable.
Other legitimate software uses similar names. RandomLib documents Random.dll and Random_d.dll as Windows shared libraries, while older SICStus Prolog documentation includes a product-specific random.dll. These files are unrelated and cannot be exchanged.

Before replacing anything, record:
- The exact filename and capitalization shown in the message
- The application or game displaying the error
- The full path of that application’s executable
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the problem began after an update, reinstall, cleanup, move, or antivirus quarantine
- Whether Windows says the file is missing, invalid, or “not designed to run on Windows”
The correct repair is the package belonging to the parent application, not a generic file with the same name.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |

Fix 1: Repair the application that owns random.dll
This is the safest and most likely solution.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the program that displays the
random.dllmessage. - Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair option:
- Return to Installed apps.
- Select the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program using its original official installer or the vendor’s licensed package.
- Launch it again from its normal shortcut.
For a game or launcher, use its built-in file verification feature before uninstalling. Look for commands such as Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or Restore files.
A successful repair normally removes the missing-file message and allows the program to start. If the same message returns, do not copy a different random.dll from another application. The installation may be deploying the wrong build or omitting a dependent runtime.
Fix 2: Restore the TMS Cryptography Pack dependency
Use this section only after confirming that the failing program was built with the TMS Cryptography Pack or that its developer identifies RandomDLL.dll as the dependency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTMS documents a Win64 RandomDLL.dll dependency for applications built with older RAD Studio versions. It also states that the DLL was included in the package beginning with version 1.2.0.1, so an older or incomplete package may not contain it.
The documented deployment location is the application output directory or another location specified by the application’s deployment configuration. Application-local deployment is safer than placing an unknown file in a Windows system directory.
To check the application directory:
- Right-click the application’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
- Check whether the vendor’s original TMS package contains a matching
RandomDLL.dllin its Win64 directory. - Copy that exact vendor-supplied file beside the application executable.
- Start the application again.
Do not use a TMS DLL from a different build unless the application vendor confirms compatibility. A mismatched file may replace the missing-file message with an access violation or another startup failure.
TMS also documents a configuration change for RAD Studio 10.2.1 and later that can bypass this dependency:
{$DEFINE IDEVERSION1021}
This belongs in the TMS configuration or source file described by the package documentation. It does not belong in a Windows folder or in a random application file. If you maintain the source code, ask the developer to apply the documented setting and rebuild the program rather than modifying a deployed computer manually.
If you cannot identify the TMS package version or target architecture, obtain the original package from the software vendor or developer. Do not substitute RandomLib’s Random.dll; it is a separate library.
Fix 3: Confirm 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL, and a 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL. This often produces an invalid-file or “not designed to run on Windows” message instead of a simple missing-file message.
Check the program architecture using the vendor’s documentation or by asking the developer. If you maintain the application, inspect its build target and the DLL’s build target together.
Then:
- Uninstall the incorrect application or library package.
- Download or obtain the matching Win32 or Win64 package from the application’s official vendor.
- Install it into the application’s normal directory.
- Start the program again.
Do not use the Windows folder names as a shortcut for deciding architecture. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Neither directory is a general-purpose storage location for third-party application DLLs.
If the application was created internally, ask the developer for the build artifact, import list, compiler version, and target architecture. Those details are more useful than the filename alone.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a DLL after an update, cleanup, or scan.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries created around the time the error began.
- Look for the exact filename and original application path.
- If the file came from a trusted, verified installer, follow the security product’s Restore or Allow on device action.
- Reinstall the application if you are uncertain about the file’s origin.
Only restore a quarantined file when you can verify that it belongs to the legitimate application. If the DLL was found in %TEMP%, an unexplained user-profile folder, a startup directory, or a randomly named location, investigate the program instead of automatically restoring it.

Fix 5: Check for a missing secondary dependency
Windows may mention random.dll even when that file exists but one of its own dependencies is missing. This can happen after moving a portable program, deleting runtime files, or installing an incomplete package.

First, use the application’s Repair or Verify files function. That is preferable to installing random runtime packages.
If the vendor identifies a required runtime:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Remove the damaged runtime version only if the vendor’s instructions require it.
- Install the runtime from Microsoft or the application vendor.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or another runtime merely because a DLL error occurred. Install a runtime only when the affected application’s documentation or developer identifies it as required.

- Enable only the Windows feature named by the application’s documentation.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components conditionally
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not replace an arbitrary third-party random.dll, but they are reasonable when multiple Windows applications are failing or system corruption is suspected.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
If DISM or SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program again. If both complete without resolving the application error, return to the application installer and architecture checks. That result usually means the missing file is third-party rather than part of Windows.
When repeatedly hunting through repair commands makes it difficult to identify what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns random.dll.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the application requires one
A driver update is not a general fix for random.dll. Consider it only when the affected software is hardware-related and its vendor specifically connects the startup failure to a graphics, audio, storage, or other device driver.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the hardware category named by the application vendor.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the application.
Prefer the computer or device manufacturer’s driver when Windows does not find one. If the problem started immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if available.
When identifying the correct driver manually requires hunting through hardware IDs and multiple packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers are reported as stale; installation is handled by the full version. It is not required for this DLL error, and the application vendor’s repair or reinstall remains the proper fix when the DLL itself is missing.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a command for installing every DLL.
Do not run:
regsvr32 random.dll
unless the application vendor explicitly says that this particular file is a COM component that must be registered. TMS RandomDLL.dll and RandomLib’s Random.dll are not documented here as requiring registration. An entry-point error from regsvr32 will not restore a missing dependency.
Avoid generic DLL downloads and System32 copying
Do not download random.dll from a generic DLL website. The file may contain malware, belong to an unrelated product, use the wrong architecture, or have an incompatible version. Even a file that removes the first error may cause crashes because the application expects companion files or a specific build.
Use these sources instead:
- The application’s original official installer
- The application vendor’s repair or file-verification feature
- The licensed TMS Cryptography Pack package when TMS is confirmed
- The software developer’s build artifacts when the program was created internally
- Microsoft’s official runtime or Windows component pages when the vendor identifies a Microsoft dependency
Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless it runs the identical application build and the application vendor approves that deployment. Never place an unidentified file in C:WindowsSystem32.
If the error still remains
Collect the information below before contacting the application vendor:
- The exact error text.
- The application name and executable path.
- The exact requested filename.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The application and library versions, if displayed.
- The date the problem began and what changed beforehand.
- Whether the file exists beside the executable.
- Any antivirus quarantine record.
- Whether repair or reinstall changed the message.
If necessary, use the application’s logs, Windows Event Viewer, Process Monitor, or a dependency inspection tool to identify the path Windows is loading and any secondary missing library. If every repair fails and the problem began after a clear system change, System Restore may be considered as a last resort, but it should not replace identifying the owning application.

Is random.dll a Windows file?
No. Windows does not provide one universal random.dll in System32 or SysWOW64. The file belongs to whichever third-party application requested it.
Can I download random.dll and copy it into System32?
No. That can install the wrong file or architecture and can create a security risk. Repair the application from its official installer instead.
Is random.dll always from TMS Cryptography Pack?
No. TMS uses RandomDLL.dll in documented Win64 cases, but RandomLib, SICStus Prolog, and other software use similar names. Identify the parent application first.
Should I register random.dll with regsvr32?
Usually not. Use regsvr32 only when the vendor confirms that the DLL is a COM server requiring registration.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does the error remain after I copy the DLL?
The file may be the wrong build, or one of its dependent libraries may also be missing. Remove the unverified copy and repair the complete application package.
What if the program is unfamiliar?
Do not restore the DLL automatically. Check its installation path, publisher, startup entries, and antivirus history. Remove the program if it is unwanted, then scan Windows.
