hpzipm12.dll is a genuine Hewlett-Packard printer-driver component, not a normal Windows runtime file. When Windows says hpzipm12.dll is missing, not found, or unable to load, the safest repair is usually to remove the damaged HP printer package and install the correct driver again.
Identify hpzipm12.dll before repairing it

The file is associated with HP’s PML and bidirectional communication infrastructure. Some HP packages also install the 32 Bit HP CIO Components Installer and services such as Pml Driver HPZ12 or Net Driver HPZ12.
A legitimate copy can exist in a Windows system directory or inside the printer-driver store, including a path resembling:
C:WindowsSystem32HPZipm12.dll
C:WindowsSystem32spoolDRIVERSx643
The exact location depends on the HP package and operating-system architecture. Do not judge the file by its name alone. Check its path, digital signature, and connection to an installed HP printer.

Error messages Windows may show
Common message variants include:
- “The program can’t start because hpzipm12.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because hpzipm12.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting hpzipm12.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading hpzipm12.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “hpzipm12.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “PmlDrv Module has stopped working.”
These messages do not identify the exact cause. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that hpzipm12.dll itself is absent, or that another dependency required by the HP driver is missing.
The timing is useful:
- During HP printer setup: the installation is incomplete or corrupted.
- After removing or updating an old printer: leftover services or driver files may still be referenced.
- After Windows Update: an older HP package may no longer work correctly.
- After antivirus activity: the file may have been quarantined.
- After disk cleanup or manual deletion: the driver package may be damaged.
- When opening an unrelated game or application: that program may be invoking an old HP component, or the file may be an impostor.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete HP printer package
This is the most reliable repair. Do not begin by downloading hpzipm12.dll separately.
1. Disconnect the printer
Turn off the printer or disconnect its USB cable temporarily. If it is a network printer, leave it disconnected from Windows during the cleanup.
2. Remove HP software
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the printer model, HP Smart, HP printer software, or an older HP driver package.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the relevant entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
If the package does not appear there:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the HP printer software.
- Choose Uninstall or Change.
Do not remove every HP entry automatically if more than one HP printer is installed. First note the printers currently listed in Windows so you do not break a different installation.

- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected HP printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Restart Windows after uninstalling the software and removing the printer.
4. Install the correct driver
Identify the exact printer model from its label or the printer’s control panel. Then obtain the current driver from HP’s official support pages or 123.hp.com. Select the package for the exact model and your Windows version.
Run the installer, and reconnect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.

How to tell whether this worked
The installation worked if:
- The HP installer completes without the DLL message.
- The printer appears under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- A test page prints.
- HP status or bidirectional communication works without another
PmlDrverror.
If the same message returns, remove the old package again and continue with the driver and service checks below. Installing a second copy over a damaged package often preserves the original problem.

Fix 2: Check the printer driver in Device Manager
Use Device Manager when Windows still detects the printer but cannot use it, or when the error began after a driver update.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the HP printer or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the update does not help:
- Return to the same device in Device Manager.
- Right-click it.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove the driver package, select that option only when you are sure it belongs to the affected HP printer.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the printer and install the correct HP package.
Windows may reinstall a compatible built-in driver. That can be enough for printing, although some HP scanning, status, or bidirectional features may require the full HP package.
When manually checking drivers, the difficult part is identifying which package is stale among several printer entries. Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
If hpzipm12.dll disappeared immediately after a security alert, inspect quarantine before copying anything from the internet.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
HPZipm12.dll. - Review the file path, detection name, and action taken.
Restore the file only when all of these are credible:
- It was located in an HP printer-driver directory.
- The related HP printer package is installed.
- The file has valid HP publisher information.
- The security event is clearly associated with that installation.
If any detail is unclear, do not restore it. Reinstall the complete driver from HP instead. Do not disable antivirus protection to force an unverified DLL into System32.
Fix 4: Remove leftover HP PML services
A failed old installation can leave services behind and cause the installer to repeatedly reference missing files. HP documentation associates this component with services named Pml Driver HPZ12 and Net Driver HPZ12.

Before removing services, make sure the affected HP printer software is no longer installed and that no other HP printer depends on the same package.

- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
sc delete "Net Driver HPZ12"
sc delete "Pml Driver HPZ12"
Restart Windows and run the correct HP installer again.
If Windows reports that a service does not exist, that is harmless. If it reports access denied, close other administrator windows and reopen Command Prompt as administrator. Do not delete HP services blindly when several printers are installed.
Associated files may remain after a service is removed. Delete driver files only after confirming that the relevant printer package is uninstalled and no other installed printer uses them.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components
Windows corruption is less likely than an incomplete HP installation because hpzipm12.dll is normally third-party. Use these commands when several installers fail, Windows reports broader system problems, or the issue began after system corruption.

Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows afterward and retry the HP driver installation.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If DISM or SFC reports an error, copy the exact message and address that Windows repair problem before repeatedly reinstalling the printer.

Fix 6: Use System Restore only for a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the printer worked immediately before a specific driver installation, Windows change, or software removal.

- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore does not replace obtaining a current compatible HP driver. If the printer package is old, restore may temporarily bring back the same incompatibility. Prefer the current HP package or a compatible Windows driver first.

To inspect an existing copy:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Check that the signer is Hewlett-Packard or HP.
- Open Details and review the file location.
- Confirm that the path belongs to an HP printer installation or Windows printer-driver directory.
A missing signature does not automatically prove malware, particularly with older packages, but a copy in a random application folder deserves caution. Run a full Windows Security scan and compare the file’s path and provenance with the HP installer. Do not treat a filename as proof of legitimacy.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
A standalone download can have the wrong version, wrong architecture, missing dependencies, altered contents, or malware. It may also place the file in the wrong directory while leaving the damaged HP package untouched.
The safe source is the complete driver package for the exact printer model from HP’s official support channel or 123.hp.com.

Do not copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit driver package
The file may be used within 32-bit or 64-bit printer-driver infrastructure depending on the package. Do not assume that a file labeled x86 or x64 is interchangeable. Reinstall the complete package selected for the printer and Windows environment.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable reason to assume that this HP driver component needs manual registration.

Running:
regsvr32 HPZipm12.dll
does not restore a missing dependency, rebuild the printer package, or repair an incompatible driver. It may simply produce an error or accomplish nothing useful.
Do not delete the file just because it exists
Removing HPZipm12.dll can break printing, printer status reporting, or bidirectional communication. Uninstall the owning HP package first, then remove leftover components only when you have confirmed that no installed printer uses them.

Is hpzipm12.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with HP printer-driver infrastructure rather than being a standard Windows component.
