Randy Pitchford confirmed in August 2024 that Gearbox was working on more Borderlands, but he did not announce Borderlands 4 by name. 2K and Gearbox formally revealed the game on August 20, 2024. It later launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on September 12, 2025, with the Nintendo Switch 2 version scheduled for October 3, 2025.
What Randy Pitchford said about the next Borderlands
In an Epic Games Store interview reported by GameSpot on August 8, 2024, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford was asked whether the studio was working on another Borderlands game. He replied: “Of course we are. There’s a moment when we’re ready, and we can and will announce something because that’s the moment to make a public promise. We’re working on lots of Borderlands. We’re working on lots of Brothers in Arms.”

Pitchford confirmed active work on the franchise, but did not say “Borderlands 4” or give a release date. GameSpot characterized the comment as a more overt hint than his July 2024 remark about “so many great things coming with Borderlands.” GameSpot’s report attributes the quote to Pitchford’s Epic Games Store interview.
When Borderlands 4 was officially announced
2K and Gearbox announced Borderlands 4 at gamescom Opening Night Live on August 20, 2024, initially saying it would arrive in 2025. In the announcement, Gearbox founder and president Randy Pitchford said the team had “a lot we’ve wanted to do with Borderlands” since introducing the looter-shooter genre with the original game. Take-Two’s announcement also reported that the franchise had sold in more than 87 million copies as of 2024; that is the publisher’s company-reported figure, not an independent sales estimate. Release dates and platforms
The release date changed after the initial announcement. 2K announced a September 23, 2025 date in February; on April 30, Take-Two said the game would arrive earlier. 2K subsequently reported Borderlands 4 available worldwide on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on September 12, 2025. The Switch 2 version was scheduled for October 3, 2025.

The September 23 date was the earlier plan for the initial platforms, not their final announced release date. 2K’s September 12 launch notice and February release-date announcement document the change.

What Borderlands 4 is about
2K describes the looter-shooter as set on Kairos, a planet ruled by the Timekeeper. Players take on the role of one of four new Vault Hunters and can explore with traversal abilities, collect weapons and play solo or in co-op with up to four players. The publisher says co-op includes instanced loot, dynamic level scaling and individual difficulty settings. These are publisher-described features, not an independent assessment of how the game performs.
A gameplay deep dive in April 2025 profiled Vex the Siren and Rafa the Exo-Soldier, and outlined the weapon system, eight manufacturers, Licensed Parts, an Enhancements gear slot, Ordnance and Rep Kits.
