Ranked: The Best PlayStation Consoles of All Time

PS2 takes the top spot, but PS4, the original PlayStation, PS5 and PS3 each have a different case in this ranking of Sony’s home consoles.

By a mix of library reach, lasting influence and how rewarding each system is to play today, the PlayStation 2 is Sony’s best home console. My ranking puts PlayStation 4 second, the original PlayStation third, PlayStation 5 fourth and PlayStation 3 fifth. That order is an editorial judgment, not a sales chart or a claim of consensus; a favorite era or game can reasonably change it.

How this ranking works

The order weighs three things: the breadth and cultural reach of a console’s games, what it contributed to the PlayStation line, and how practical or enjoyable it is to play today. Hardware sales help show how widely a system reached, but they do not measure game quality. Sony’s reported totals also use different cutoff dates, and PS5 is still an active generation.

This list covers Sony’s five main home-console generations, from the original PlayStation through PS5. Sony’s company history dates the first PlayStation’s Japanese launch to 1994, while its timeline records PS4 launches in North America, Europe and Latin America in November 2013 and PS5’s launch in November 2020. See Sony’s company history and expanded timeline.

1. PlayStation 2

Why it ranks first

PS2 combines extraordinary reach with a defining place in PlayStation history. Sony reported more than 160 million units sold in to the market as of March 31, 2012, the highest published cumulative hardware figure among the systems compared here. Its software total was more than 1.537 billion units by the same date. Those figures establish scale, not an objective measure of quality, but they reinforce the case for a system whose appeal extended well beyond a niche audience.

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation®5 Digital Edition (slim)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

Its first-place position rests on the combination: a huge, consequential library and a long-lasting cultural footprint, rather than sales alone. It is the strongest choice for readers judging a console by the breadth of the generation it represents.

Playing it today

For the original experience, a functioning PS2 and compatible display setup are needed; availability and condition vary in the used market. A modern console may offer access to some older games, but that is not the same as reproducing the entire original library. Check the specific game and hardware compatibility before buying on the assumption that a later system will play it.

2. PlayStation 4

Why it ranks second

PS4 is the most persuasive modern-era entry in this ranking: it paired broad audience reach with a substantial generation of games and remains a practical way to play its own catalog. Sony reported more than 117 million units sold in as of June 30, 2022. The figure makes PS4 one of PlayStation’s most widely adopted systems, though it is not a same-date comparison with PS2 or PS3 totals.

Rank #2
Sony PlayStation 5 PS5 Disc Version Gaming Console, 4K Blu-ray Player, 16GB GDDR6 Memory, Ultra-High Speed 825GB SSD, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, 120Hz 8K Output
  • CPU: x86-64-AMD Ryzen Zen 8 Cores / 16 Threads at 3.5GHz.GPU: AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics engine.
  • 16GB GDDR6/256-bit Memory; 825GB SSD Storage Capacity
  • Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T), IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, Bluetooth 5.1
  • HDR technology, 8K output, 4K TV gaming, Up to 120 fps with 120Hz output, Tempest 3D AudioTech
  • What's Included: Sony PlayStation 5 Disc Version; Wireless controller; USB cable, HDMI cable, AC power cord. Nogtox PVT HDMI_cable

It falls short of the top spot because PS2’s historical reach and legacy are harder to match. PS4’s second place reflects its strength as an all-around generation, not a claim that it has the single best game library by a measured critical or player score.

Playing it today

PS4 is a sensible option for players focused on that generation’s software and a familiar console experience. Its position here is also practical: it is newer than the original PlayStation and PS2, while avoiding the fact that PS5’s lifetime is still underway. Confirm compatibility title by title if your plan depends on playing a specific older game on newer hardware.

3. Original PlayStation

Why it ranks third

The original PlayStation established the foundation for the line that followed. Its 1994 Japanese launch makes it the earliest system in this comparison, and its influence is larger than a sales figure can capture. Sony reported more than 102.4 million units sold in by March 31, 2012, demonstrating substantial reach alongside its historical importance.

Rank #3
Playstation 5 Digital Edition PS5 Gaming (Disc Free) Console (Renewed)
  • 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
  • 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
  • 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
  • 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU

It places below PS4 because its age makes access and convenience more complicated today, and below PS2 because the successor built on that foundation with an even larger reported audience. The third-place ranking is not a dismissal of its role; it recognizes that historic significance and present-day usability are different criteria.

Playing it today

Original hardware offers the most direct period experience, but players should verify console condition, regional compatibility and the availability of the games they want. Some titles may be accessible through later PlayStation systems or other officially supported routes, but there is no guarantee that any particular game is available on current hardware.

4. PlayStation 5

Why it ranks fourth

PS5 is the current generation, so its lifetime standing is unfinished. Sony reported more than 95 million units sold in as of June 30, 2026; that is a current-generation milestone, not a final total, and Sony’s measure is hardware sell-in rather than confirmed consumer sell-through. Its place at fourth is therefore provisional in the sense that the generation still has time to build its legacy.

Rank #4
Sony Playstation 5 Disc Version PS5 Console - 4K-TV Gaming, 120Hz 8K Output, 16GB GDDR6, 825GB SSD, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1 (Renewed) White
  • Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
  • PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
  • Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
  • 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
  • Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.

The hardware makes a strong present-day case: Sony’s December 2023 feature description highlights fast loading, ray-traced environments, and DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. These are meaningful strengths, but novelty alone does not settle an all-time ranking. Sony’s own announcement is useful for understanding its claims about the system, not as independent evidence of critical superiority: PS5 50 million milestone announcement.

Who should choose it now

Readers buying into the current generation should consider a PlayStation 5 console for its present-day features and access to PS5 software. That is practical buying context, not a change to the historical ranking. The DualSense wireless controller for PlayStation 5 is the directly compatible controller associated with the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers discussed above.

5. PlayStation 3

Why it ranks fifth

PS3 is a consequential generation, but it is the least compelling all-around pick in this particular order. Sony reported more than 87.4 million units sold in as of March 31, 2017, and more than 999.4 million software units as of March 31, 2019. These figures show a large platform; they do not establish that its games were better or worse than those on other systems.

  • 825GB of storage, keep your favorite games raeady and waiting for you to jump in and play
  • Ultra-High Speed SSD, maximize yoru play sessions with near instant load times for installed PS5 games

  • Ray Tracing, immerse yourself in owrlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games

The fifth-place spot reflects the criteria used here: PS3 does not displace the larger historical case for PS2, the broad all-around appeal of PS4, the original system’s foundational importance or PS5’s present-day hardware advantages. A reader whose favorite games or formative gaming years belong to PS3 could reasonably put it much higher.

Playing it today

PS3 access depends on the specific game and how you want to play it. If you are considering original hardware, verify the console’s condition and the title’s regional format. Do not assume that a later PlayStation console supports every PS3 game; check the game’s compatibility and availability before choosing a system.

What the sales figures do—and do not—show

Sony’s business data and sales page reports cumulative hardware sell-in with platform-specific cutoff dates. The figures below should be read with those dates attached; they are not a synchronized snapshot of lifetime totals.

Console Sony-reported hardware sell-in Cutoff
PlayStation 2 More than 160 million units March 31, 2012
PlayStation 4 More than 117 million units June 30, 2022
Original PlayStation More than 102.4 million units March 31, 2012
PlayStation 5 More than 95 million units June 30, 2026; active generation, not a lifetime total
PlayStation 3 More than 87.4 million units March 31, 2017

Sell-in means hardware sold into the market; it should not automatically be described as units purchased by consumers. Sony’s software figures also need care: its reported PS4/PS5 combined software total includes physical and download-only titles, PS VR titles and bundled software. It is not an independent total for either console. Sales are evidence of reach, not a verdict on which system had the best games.

Why reasonable rankings differ

There is no single objective measure that settles a ranking across generations. Someone prioritizing current features may put PS5 first; a player whose strongest memories are tied to one catalog may rank that system above the others. Community posts ask questions such as “Where would you rate the PS2 compared to the other PlayStation consoles?” and “Rank the consoles,” but those discussions are examples of individual reader phrasing, not representative polls or evidence of consensus: r/ps2 discussion and r/playstation discussion.
