rasadhlp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, and a missing or damaged copy should normally be repaired through Windows rather than downloaded separately. Start with DISM and SFC, then check Windows Security, the affected application, and the file’s location if the error continues.
What this file actually does
rasadhlp.dll is the Remote Access AutoDial Helper, a Windows component associated with networking and Remote Access Service functionality. It is published by Microsoft Corporation and ships as part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or game-specific library. An application may mention it while starting because Windows loads system dependencies on the application’s behalf. That does not necessarily mean the application installed the file or that reinstalling a runtime will repair it.
On a typical Windows installation, the file belongs in:

C:WindowsSystem32
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system binaries are stored under:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The names can be confusing. System32 is normally the native 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Windows file-system redirection can make a 32-bit program transparently see the appropriate version when it accesses a system path. Microsoft documents this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
Do not rely on a generic file size, version number, hash, or architecture from another computer. Windows file versions vary by release, edition, architecture, and servicing level.

| The error appeared after Windows Update | Servicing or system-file corruption may have occurred | Finish pending updates, restart, then repeat DISM and SFC |
| Only one application fails | The application may have a damaged installation or a private DLL copy | Use its Verify, Repair, or reinstall function |
| The file repeatedly disappears | Quarantine, malware, disk errors, or recurring corruption may be involved | Review Protection History and run a full scan |
These symptoms do not prove that rasadhlp.dll itself is the only damaged file. Windows may report the first dependency that fails while loading a larger chain of files.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest and most likely fix when the file is missing, corrupt, or unsuitable for the installed Windows build. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC then uses those repair sources to check protected system files.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Select Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt in the results.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Press Enter and wait for it to finish. The process can appear to pause at a percentage for some time. Do not close the window while it is working.
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows, even if the commands report that no problems were found.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can provide the repair files that SFC needs. The supported procedure is documented in Microsoft’s guide to using the System File Checker tool.
Understand the SFC result
SFC normally ends with one of these useful messages:
-
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations
SFC did not detect damaged protected files. Continue with the application and loader checks below if the error remains. -
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them
Restart Windows and test the affected program again.Recommended: PC Feels Slow? A Free Scan Shows What's Dragging Windows Down →Recommended: Crashes or Glitches? A Free Driver Scan Usually Finds the Culprit →Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them
Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time. If the result does not change, use the recovery steps later in this guide instead of copying a DLL manually.
If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, the Windows repair source may not match the installed image. Continue with Windows Update and recovery options rather than downloading rasadhlp.dll from an unrelated site.
Repeating SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds, while the repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands remain the primary repair path.
Fix 2: Complete Windows Update and restart
A Windows servicing problem can leave protected files incomplete or inconsistent. A Microsoft Q&A report describes repeated rasadhlp.dll messages after an update, but that report does not establish that a particular update universally causes the error.

Check for pending updates as follows:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Settings → Windows Update and check again.
- After updates finish, run DISM and SFC again in that order.
If Windows Update itself fails, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance. Do not assume the update is the cause solely because the error appeared afterward. The timing may indicate broader component-store corruption.
Fix 3: Repair or verify the application that shows the error
If Windows starts normally and only one game or application reports rasadhlp.dll, the application installation may be damaged. It may also contain a private copy of a system DLL that is incorrect for your Windows build.
Look through the application’s settings, launcher, or installed-program entry for one of these functions:
- Repair
- Verify files
- Scan and repair
- Check installation
- Reinstall
For a conventional desktop program:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings.
- Reinstall the program from its official installer if necessary.
For a game launcher, use its built-in file verification feature before reinstalling the entire game. If the launcher does not provide repair tools, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows’ documented DLL search order commonly checks an application directory before system directories. That means a bad rasadhlp.dll beside the executable can interfere even when the Windows copy is healthy. Do not replace that private file with a random download. Remove or repair the application through its supported installation process.
If several unrelated applications fail, treat the problem as a Windows integrity issue rather than reinstalling each application separately.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Microsoft Defender or another security product may have quarantined a file. A quarantine event does not automatically mean the file was malware, but restoring a file merely because its name is rasadhlp.dll is unsafe.
To inspect Defender’s records:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any event involving
rasadhlp.dll. - Check the complete path, detection details, and publisher information.
A legitimate Windows copy should normally be in a Windows system directory and carry Microsoft signature information. A file with the same name in a temporary folder, a user profile, a game directory, or an unfamiliar application folder deserves additional scrutiny.
If Defender identifies the file as a threat, leave it quarantined until you have completed a full scan. Run:
- Windows Security
- Virus & threat protection
- Scan options
- Full scan
- Scan now
Do not add a broad exclusion for the Windows directory just to suppress the warning. If the file was removed and DISM/SFC cannot restore it, use Windows recovery procedures or contact Microsoft support rather than downloading a replacement.
Microsoft explains quarantine and restoration in its Protection History documentation.
Fix 5: Check the path, signature, and architecture
You can check whether a file exists without downloading or replacing anything.

Do not interpret the absence of a file in one directory by itself as proof of corruption. The relevant copy depends on Windows architecture and the process loading it.

To check the Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.

- Look at System type.
Check the publisher signature
Right-click the file, select Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab if it is available. Review the signer details and signature status. A valid Microsoft signature is useful evidence, but it does not replace DISM and SFC.
A file can have the right name and still be the wrong file. Pay attention to its full path, not only the filename.
Consider 32-bit and 64-bit loading
Do not copy a 32-bit file into the native system directory or replace a 64-bit file with a 32-bit copy. A mismatch can create the same “not designed to run on Windows” message.
The application’s architecture also matters. A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows uses Windows redirection behavior when accessing system files. Microsoft describes this in its file-system redirection reference.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, generally for COM or ActiveX components.
There is no evidence that rasadhlp.dll should be manually registered. Running a command such as this is not an appropriate fix:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →regsvr32 rasadhlp.dll
It may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That does not mean the file needs a different registration command. It means registration is not the correct repair method.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains what the command is designed to do.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the timing points there
rasadhlp.dll is not identified as belonging to a particular graphics, audio, storage, or chipset driver. Do not start by installing unrelated driver packages.
A driver check is reasonable if the error began immediately after a device change, a driver installation, or a hardware fault.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Network adapters, Display adapters, or Storage controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for a device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Roll Back Driver only if the button is available and the issue began after that driver change.
- Otherwise choose Update Driver and use a driver supplied by Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
Do not delete devices or install driver bundles merely because an application mentioned rasadhlp.dll.
Manually hunting through driver versions can leave unrelated hardware untouched or introduce another mismatch. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the official hardware manufacturer or Windows Update remains the preferred source.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help if the problem started after a driver, application, update, or configuration change and an appropriate restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs to review likely changes.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the process.
System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can remove programs, drivers, and settings added after the selected restore point. Back up important data first. Microsoft explains these effects in its System Restore guidance.

If DISM repeatedly cannot find repair sources, SFC repeatedly reports unrepairable files, or several Windows components are failing, the installation may have broader corruption.

Before using recovery options:
- Back up important documents.
- Make sure you know your Microsoft account and application credentials.
- Record any specialized software settings.
- Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
Available recovery choices depend on the Windows installation and edition. Prefer an in-place repair installation that preserves applications and personal files when that option is available and appropriate. Use a matching Windows installation source rather than an unrelated image.
A clean reset or reinstall is more disruptive and should be considered only after less destructive repair methods have failed. If the disk is reporting errors or files become corrupt repeatedly, investigate storage health as well.
Why downloading rasadhlp.dll is usually wrong
There is no verified Microsoft download page for an individual rasadhlp.dll. Random DLL download sites pages can provide:
- Malware disguised with a familiar filename
- A file from a different Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An unsigned or modified binary
- A copy with incompatible dependencies
Copying a file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can also create version conflicts and DLL hijacking risk. It does not repair the Windows component store, restore related files, or address the reason the original file disappeared.
The safe sources for repair are Windows itself, Windows Update, Microsoft recovery media, and the affected application’s official repair or installation process.
FAQ
Is rasadhlp.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A file with that name is not automatically safe, particularly if it is outside the expected Windows directories, lacks a valid Microsoft signature, or was flagged by security software. Check the path and signature, then run a full scan.
Should I reinstall Visual C++ or DirectX?
Usually no. rasadhlp.dll is a Windows system component, not an identified Visual C++ or DirectX runtime file. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC first. Reinstall a runtime only when the application’s own documentation identifies that runtime as missing.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I copy the file from another computer?
Normally no. The other computer may have a different Windows edition, build, servicing level, or architecture. Use Microsoft-supported repair sources instead.
Does Windows 11 handle this file differently from Windows 10?
The file is still part of Windows, but its version and servicing state can differ between releases and installations. Do not use a version number or file size from another system as a universal standard. DISM and SFC select repair files appropriate to the installed Windows image.
Why does the message mention System32 when my application is 32-bit?
On 64-bit Windows, Windows uses file-system redirection for 32-bit processes. The visible path in an error message does not always describe the physical file location used internally. Do not move files between System32 and SysWOW64 manually.
Can I enable a Windows Feature to restore it?
There is no verified basis for enabling a random Windows Feature to replace rasadhlp.dll. Use DISM and SFC for the protected system file. Enable or repair a networking feature only when Windows or the application specifically identifies that feature as missing.

What if the error appears only when one game starts?
Verify or repair the game files, then reinstall the game if necessary. Also check whether the game directory contains a private copy of rasadhlp.dll. Do not download a replacement beside the game executable.
What is the correct order of commands?
Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Run them from an elevated Command Prompt, wait for each to finish, and restart afterward.
