Ravenswatch Review: A Solid, Tried-and-True Action Roguelike

A top-down action roguelike with dark folklore heroes, timed runs, build choices, and solo or four-player co-op, Ravenswatch puts a familiar genre loop in a distinctive setting.

Ravenswatch is a top-down action roguelike built around real-time combat, fairy-tale heroes, and runs that ask you to balance exploration against a ticking clock. Its familiar structure gives the game a dependable foundation; its darker folklore setting and flexible hero builds give each run room for personality. It supports solo play and co-op for up to four players, making the key choice less about whether it is a roguelike and more about whether you want to tackle its pressure alone or with a team.

What kind of roguelike is Ravenswatch?

Ravenswatch is an action roguelike, not a turn-based or deck-building game. You control a hero from a top-down perspective, fight enemies in real time, and grow stronger during a run by adding talents and combining them with items and other upgrades. The developers describe it as an intense combat game set in dark reinterpretations of folktales and legends. Passtech Games’ overview and Nacon’s product page establish the game’s genre and advertised setup.

The recognizable source material is part of the appeal: the cast includes darker versions of Little Red Riding Hood, Sun Wukong, and the Snow Queen. Rather than retelling those stories directly, the game uses their characters as the foundation for a dark fantasy action setting.

How a run works

A run unfolds over three days and three nights. During that window, you build your hero’s power and decide when to take on the chapter boss. The clock makes those choices meaningful: time spent exploring and developing your build competes with the need to advance toward the boss encounter. It is a familiar roguelike loop, but one shaped by a clear question of timing rather than open-ended map clearing.

Ravenswatch Legendary Edition PS5
  • BANISH THE NIGHTMARE FROM YOUR REALM; The Nightmares are spreading within Reverie, corrupting everything in their path
  • You must hone your skills and find the strength to defeat the creatures of the Nightmare using unique hero abilities
  • To defeat the Nightmare and reach the final chapter, you will need a strong build, focus and excellent teamwork
  • The world of Reverie is built on old folk tales and legends; from the Three Little Pigs to Norse mythology to One Thousand and One Nights
  • Run after run, play as different heroes, make the most of the upgrades and items you find, and explore

Progression comes from combining talents, items, and dreams into a build. Nintendo’s product description advertises three open maps, more than 200 talents, 50 magical items, four difficulty levels, and customizable modes. These are publisher-provided feature counts, not an independent assessment of how much variety each produces in play. Nintendo’s Switch listing describes the progression and advertised content.

Does Ravenswatch feel solid?

The structure gives Ravenswatch a strong genre baseline: real-time combat, upgrade choices, build-making, escalating runs, and a boss to bring each chapter to a head. The folklore cast also gives that framework a distinct identity. Those ingredients support the “tried-and-true” part of the verdict; the stronger claim that the game is solid depends on how its combat, hero differences, pacing, and repeat runs work together in actual play.

  • You must hone your skills and find the strength to defeat the creatures of the Nightmare using unique hero abilities inspired by characters from folk tales and legends.
  • To defeat the Nightmare and reach the final chapter, you will need a strong build, focus and excellent teamwork.
  • Increase your fighting power in battles then face the level boss when you feel ready… or when you no longer have a choice.
  • The world of Reverie is built on old folk tales and legends. From the three little pigs to Norse mythology to One Thousand and One Nights.
  • Run after run, play as different heroes, make the most of the upgrades and items you find, and explore a randomly generated map with new activities and new enemies.

One useful way to judge the game is to watch for the tradeoffs its design creates. Do you have enough time to explore before the boss? Do upgrades make a hero feel meaningfully different from run to run? Is the action clear when enemy pressure rises? And does co-op add useful teamwork without making solo play feel like an afterthought? These are the points that determine whether its familiar loop stays engaging rather than merely recognizable.

Steam’s English-language user review snapshot, accessed October 8, 2026, rated the game “Very Positive,” with 85% of 8,455 reviews positive; recent reviews were “Mostly Positive,” with 78% of 198 positive. Those user ratings are time-sensitive community feedback, not a substitute for evaluating the game’s design firsthand. Steam also displays a 4/5 review excerpt from Hardcore Gamer calling it “A solid tried and true roguelike”; the listing does not provide a date for that excerpt. Steam’s listing includes the review snapshot and release information.

Is Ravenswatch worth playing solo or with friends?

The game supports both solo play and co-op for up to four players. Nintendo’s U.S. Switch listing specifically describes online play for one to four players; Steam likewise lists single-player and online co-op. That makes the format flexible, but the sources establish availability rather than whether solo balance or team synergy is better. Choose based on whether you prefer managing the run and its time pressure alone or sharing fights and decisions with friends.
