Razer AVA explained: the holographic AI gaming companion, launch plans and price

Razer AVA is real, but it is not yet a finished, widely available retail product. First shown as an AI esports coach at CES 2025, Project AVA has evolved into a physical desktop companion with a small animated 3D display, camera, microphones, screen-understanding features and broader agentic AI ambitions. Razer currently estimates U.S. shipping between July 1 and December 31, 2026, but the final retail price remains undisclosed.

That makes AVA more substantial than a speculative CES concept, but buyers should treat its capabilities, pricing, privacy model and launch timing as unfinished.

What is Razer AVA?

Project AVA is Razer’s attempt to combine a gaming assistant, general-purpose AI companion and animated desktop device. Razer first presented it at CES 2025 as an AI esports coach. At CES 2026, the project became a physical desk companion with an animated 3D avatar. At GDC 2026, Razer described AVA as an agentic AI companion that can understand a goal, break it into steps and interact with supported apps and services.

Razer’s own announcements describe the project’s direction, rather than a final, independently validated product specification. The device is therefore best understood as an announced product in development.

Razer’s CES 2026 announcement outlines the shift from gaming coach to broader AI companion, while its GDC 2026 announcement focuses on agentic functions.

What does the “holographic” display actually mean?

Razer describes AVA as having a 5.5-inch animated 3D holographic display. The device is a compact cylindrical desktop unit that shows a character with eye tracking, facial expressions, natural movement and synchronized speech.

That is not the same as a free-floating, room-scale hologram. “Holographic” is Razer’s product terminology for the compact display experience; the available information does not establish a particular projection technology, brightness, viewing angle, resolution or refresh rate.

Razer has shown multiple possible characters, including its own avatars Kira and Zane, alongside other featured or licensed personalities. Whether every avatar will be available in every region, and whether some will cost extra, remains unknown.

What can AVA do for gamers?

Razer says AVA can provide strategy advice, recommend games, suggest loadouts, help with puzzles and offer gameplay guidance. Its PC Vision Mode is intended to interpret content visible on a connected computer screen, allowing the assistant to respond to menus, objectives and game situations.

The important distinction is between screen analysis and game automation:

  • 3-PORT USB TYPE A HUB — From webcams to controllers to drawing tablets, plug in more devices to the laptop without solely relying on its native USB ports
  • Screen analysis: AVA interprets what it believes is visible on the display.
  • Information assistance: it can explain mechanics, suggest tactics or help diagnose a situation.
  • Game automation: it plays, aims, clicks, farms or otherwise controls the game.

Razer says AVA is designed as a coach and trainer, not an automated gameplay tool, and says it intends to comply with game developers’ terms of service. That does not create a universal exemption. A game, anti-cheat system, league or tournament may still prohibit screen-reading overlays or AI assistance, even when the software does not control the player’s inputs.

AVA’s advice may also be wrong or delayed. Rapid camera movement, dark scenes, small text, multiple monitors, unusual resolutions and overlays could all affect screen interpretation. For competitive play, users should check the specific game and event rules rather than relying only on Razer’s description.

What can it do outside games?

Razer presents AVA as a general-purpose assistant for tasks such as scheduling, meal planning, wardrobe suggestions, brainstorming, data analysis and creative problem-solving.

The company’s broader agentic vision includes understanding a goal, planning several actions and coordinating supported applications, services and devices. Razer has mentioned possible workflows involving services such as Spotify and calendars. In practice, the usefulness of this feature will depend on which integrations ship, what permissions they require and how reliably AVA handles multi-step tasks.

An assistant that can act rather than merely answer also needs safeguards. Users should expect confirmation controls for messages, purchases, calendar changes, file operations and other actions with lasting consequences. Razer has not yet published a complete description of those controls.

How does AVA see and hear?

Razer has listed an HD camera, eye tracking and far-field microphones among AVA’s sensing hardware. These features support its animated interaction, voice conversations and PC Vision Mode.

  • Detachable Base: Allows the base to be separated from the headset stand for safe transport and more portability

  • Universal Compatibility: Design to fit all size headphone with all-new aluminum construction and enhanced height for larger headsets

They also make privacy a central buying question. Razer’s materials refer to user control and secure handling, but the cited information does not fully explain:

  • whether camera, microphone and screen data are processed locally, in the cloud or through a hybrid system;
  • whether screen images, recordings, transcripts or inferred preferences are retained;
  • how long that data is stored;
  • whether the camera and microphones have physical disable controls;
  • whether AVA works with PC Vision Mode disabled; or
  • how visitors and other household members are notified when sensing is active.

A camera and far-field microphone on a shared desk can capture more than the owner intended. Buyers should wait for final privacy documentation before treating AVA as suitable for bedrooms, shared workspaces or sensitive conversations.

Which AI model powers it?

The CES demonstration used xAI’s Grok to show AVA’s conversational personality and response speed. Razer has also described AVA as a multi-model platform rather than a device permanently tied to one AI model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Razer has discussed an “Inference Control Plane” capable of routing requests between local and cloud models. That creates a distinction between:

  • the model used in a demonstration;
  • the models available during beta;
  • the models used at commercial launch; and
  • the controls, if any, that customers receive over model selection.

It is therefore inaccurate to describe the final product simply as an AI device that “runs on Grok.” Razer has not established which functions will work offline, how much cloud access will be required or whether cloud inference will involve a recurring charge.

Hardware and compatibility

Razer’s regional product information says AVA is designed for Windows users and requires a direct USB Type-C connection to a Windows PC. Razer says the wired connection provides the bandwidth needed for PC Vision Mode and low-latency communication between the computer and the device.

That does not mean every USB-C port will necessarily be suitable. A USB-C connector alone does not specify data bandwidth, power delivery or display capability. The final port requirements should be confirmed before purchase.

Known requirements and access points include:

  • a Windows PC;
  • a direct USB Type-C connection;
  • a Razer ID to complete a purchase, although Razer says an account is not required for the initial reservation; and
  • Razer Cortex for access to the beta application process.

Razer has not provided complete public requirements for Windows version, processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage, power, networking or USB-C data standards. Support for macOS, Linux, consoles and mobile devices is also not established in the cited material.

When will Razer AVA ship?

Razer currently describes AVA as expected to ship in the second half of 2026. Its U.S. reservation terms define that estimate as July 1 through December 31, 2026.

That is a shipping window, not a firm launch date. The reservation terms say the timing is an estimate and may change. Reservations and final shipping are limited to legal residents of the 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C.

Razer’s reservation page is the relevant source for the current terms: Project AVA reservation information.

The only concrete amount currently published for U.S. customers is a $20 reservation deposit. Razer says the deposit is fully refundable and intended to count toward the eventual purchase price.

  • ‎10.84 x 13.99 x 0.14 inches

AVA does not currently have a published final retail price in the cited Razer materials. The $20 amount is not the cost of the device and should not be described as a $20 product.

Other unanswered pricing questions include:

  • whether a subscription will be required;
  • whether cloud inference will incur usage fees;
  • whether premium avatars or features will cost extra;
  • warranty length and shipping costs; and
  • international pricing and availability.

How does the beta work?

Razer’s beta process is separate from reserving the hardware. The stated path is:

  1. Install Razer Cortex.
  2. Select AVA Beta.
  3. Check the system requirements.
  4. Submit an application.

Participation is limited and selection is not guaranteed. Joining the beta does not guarantee ownership of the final hardware or unrestricted access to the finished software. Details are available on Razer’s AVA beta page.

Is AVA a finished product or a concept?

It is somewhere between those two descriptions. AVA is more concrete than a purely speculative CES concept because Razer has demonstrated hardware, published product information, opened reservations and created a beta pathway.

It is not yet a mature retail product. Razer still uses the Project AVA name, shipping remains estimated, the final price is unknown and the commercial version may differ from demonstrations or beta features. The safest description is pre-release AI desk companion or announced product in development.

Should you reserve it?

Reserving may make sense if you:

  • want to experiment with an unusual gaming-focused AI device;
  • are comfortable with an unknown final price and changing specifications;
  • already use a Windows gaming PC with a suitable direct USB-C connection;
  • are interested in testing agentic software early; and
  • live in the United States and accept the estimated, non-guaranteed shipping window.

Waiting is more sensible if you need:

  • a confirmed retail price or subscription structure;
  • immediate delivery;
  • offline operation;
  • macOS, Linux, console or mobile support;
  • fully documented camera, microphone and screen-data controls;
  • proven accuracy and low latency; or
  • clear approval for use in a particular competitive game or tournament.

What alternatives exist?

AVA occupies an unusual category rather than directly replacing one established product. Conventional smart displays are more established for calendars, music, timers and smart-home controls, but are not positioned as holographic gaming coaches. PC AI assistants and gaming overlays avoid the cost of dedicated hardware, although they lack AVA’s persistent animated presence. AI headsets and smart glasses offer more portable context, while a webcam, microphone and AI application can be assembled modularly and replaced more easily.

The central comparison is not simply “hologram versus smart speaker.” It is whether AVA’s physical presence, screen awareness and gaming context provide enough value to justify a dedicated Windows-connected device, unknown pricing and unresolved privacy and compatibility questions.

The bottom line

Razer AVA is a real product initiative with demonstrated hardware, but it is still a pre-release device rather than a proven retail companion. Its most interesting promise is the combination of an expressive desktop avatar with screen-aware gaming help and multi-step AI actions. Its largest risks are equally clear: an undisclosed final price, estimated shipping, incomplete privacy details, possible cloud dependence, uncertain integrations and game-specific rules around AI assistance.

For early adopters, a refundable U.S. reservation may be a relatively low-commitment way to follow the project. For everyone else, the sensible moment to decide will be after Razer publishes the final price, system requirements, data policies and launch specifications.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
