Do not install BIOS, embedded-controller (EC) firmware, or recovery files until you have matched them to the laptop’s full model identifier, usually an RZ09-xxxx code.
This guide covers Blade 15 Advanced generations from roughly 2018–2022. The steps focus first on safe, reversible checks; data-erasing recovery and firmware work come later. If the battery is swollen, the laptop smells burnt, or its charging port or cable is damaged, stop using it and arrange qualified service.
Identify the exact Blade 15 Advanced model
“Blade 15 Advanced” covers multiple generations and configurations, with different processors, graphics hardware, displays, adapters, drivers, and firmware. Look for the full RZ09-xxxx identifier on the underside label, original packaging or invoice, in BIOS/UEFI system information, or in Windows System Information. Razer’s support pages separate model families; for example, its 2021 Advanced pages cover RZ09-0367x and RZ09-0409x.
Use the exact model’s support page to select downloads and recovery media. Never use a BIOS, EC firmware, keyboard firmware, or recovery image simply because it names a similar Blade 15. See Razer’s 2021 RZ09-0367x support page and 2021 RZ09-0409x support page for examples of model-specific support.

Check for hazards before troubleshooting
Shut down and unplug the laptop if you find any of the following:
- A swollen or unusually hot battery, a lifting trackpad, or a distorted bottom cover.
- Smoke, a burning smell, liquid damage, melted connector plastic, or repeated shutdowns accompanied by an electrical smell.
- A frayed AC cable, exposed wiring, or a damaged charging port.
Do not keep gaming with a swollen battery, and do not puncture, compress, freeze, or put one in household trash. Razer warns that batteries from other vendors can create thermal-runaway and fire risks; use Razer-authorized parts or a qualified repair provider. Its system recovery guidance includes this battery warning. Check current service eligibility and options with Razer Support.
Choose the troubleshooting path by symptom
| Symptom | First safe action | What the result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| No lights, fans, logo, or other response | Remove peripherals, check the adapter and outlet, then try the hard reset below. | If there is still no response, consider the adapter, battery, charging port, motherboard, or firmware rather than Windows. |
| Fans or keyboard lights work, but there is no picture | Check brightness, try the Windows graphics reset shortcut if Windows may be running, and connect an external display. | Whether the Razer logo or BIOS appears helps separate a Windows/driver issue from a pre-boot display, firmware, or hardware fault. |
| Windows starts, but games crash or performance falls | Check airflow, adapter recognition, temperatures and recent driver changes; change one variable at a time. | Load-related faults may involve thermals, power delivery, drivers, memory, storage, or the GPU. |
| Charging is intermittent | Try a known-good outlet, inspect the cable and port, and check Windows charging status. | A loose connection may point to a cable, port, or charging fault; battery wear is a separate possibility. |
| Problem began after a BIOS or graphics-mode change | Revert the setting if the display is usable; avoid repeated firmware flashes. | If the screen fails before Windows loads, escalate rather than treating it as a routine app problem. |
Fix no-power and sudden-shutdown problems
Try a safe power reset
- Shut down if possible. Disconnect docks, external displays, USB devices, memory cards, and other peripherals.
- Connect the original or correctly specified Razer AC adapter directly to a known-good wall outlet. Check the adapter cable at both ends and inspect the charging port.
- If the laptop was under heavy load, let it cool before testing again.
- Hold the power button for about 15 seconds, or until the power indicator blinks, following Razer’s blank- or black-screen procedure.
- Reconnect AC power and try a normal startup.
This is a power-state reset, not a Windows repair or a hardware fix. It may clear a temporary power or embedded-controller lock, but it cannot repair a failed adapter, battery, charging port, motherboard, display, GPU, or corrupted firmware. If the laptop still has no signs of life, arrange hardware diagnosis rather than repeating the reset indefinitely.
Diagnose a black or blank screen
No logo, no BIOS, and no picture on either display
If the laptop has no logo or BIOS image and an external display also stays blank, start with the power checks above. If fans or lights come on but neither screen shows pre-boot output, a Windows driver is less likely to be the sole cause; display hardware, firmware, GPU, or motherboard trouble may be involved.

- Raise the brightness and disconnect then reconnect external displays or docks.
- If Windows may be running, press
Win + Ctrl + Shift + Bto reset the graphics driver. A beep or brief flicker may indicate that Windows responded. - Connect an external monitor as a diagnostic. If it works, that does not prove the GPU is healthy or establish that the internal panel alone is faulty.
- Check whether the Razer logo or BIOS is visible. If BIOS appears but the picture disappears in Windows, focus first on Windows recovery and graphics drivers.
- If the problem began after an update, use Windows Recovery or Safe Mode to roll back or reinstall the relevant display driver.
Microsoft separates blank-screen cases such as a cursor-only screen, a login screen, a screen following an update, and a blinking cursor. Its Windows blank-screen guide gives recovery and display-adapter steps for those different symptoms. Razer also advises updating graphics drivers through Windows Update in its Blade black-screen guidance.
Black screen after changing graphics mode
Some Blade 15 Advanced models and software versions offer graphics options such as hybrid/Optimus operation or dedicated-GPU-only operation; the available modes vary. If the display still works, restore the last working mode. If possible, enter BIOS and restore appropriate defaults. Do not repeatedly force dedicated-GPU-only mode after the system has become unresponsive. If the screen is unavailable before Windows starts, use model-matched recovery guidance or contact support.

Community reports describe dedicated-GPU or display-mode failures on individual machines, including discussions at this Razer thread and this technical-support discussion. These are anecdotal examples, not evidence that every Blade supports the same modes or shares a universal defect.
Blinking cursor or “no boot device”
A blinking cursor can mean BIOS/UEFI cannot find a boot device, which differs from a Windows desktop that goes black. Enter BIOS/UEFI and check whether the internal SSD is detected and correctly prioritized; disconnect external boot media. If the SSD appears, try Windows Recovery. Do not reinstall Windows until important files are backed up, and seek storage diagnosis if the SSD is missing.
Check charging and battery behavior
A battery that pauses charging at full and resumes at about 95% is not automatically defective: Razer describes this behavior in its RZ09-0367x support material and RZ09-0409x support material. That behavior alone is not a battery-health test.
- Use the correct Razer adapter; an adapter may charge the battery yet fail to support high-performance operation reliably.
- Try another wall outlet and inspect the cable and port. If charging changes when the connector moves gently, stop flexing it and have the cable or port checked.
- Check whether Windows says “plugged in” or “plugged in, not charging,” and test charging with the laptop powered off.
- Generate a battery report from Command Prompt:
powercfg /batteryreport
Windows reports the saved file location. Review design capacity, estimated full-charge capacity, any available cycle count, recent usage, and battery-life estimates. These are diagnostic estimates, not laboratory measurements. A marked capacity decline, sharply reduced runtime, shutdowns at nonzero charge, or erratic percentages can indicate battery wear; no single percentage threshold applies to every battery.
Investigate overheating, fan noise, and throttling
- Note whether the issue occurs at idle, during ordinary work, or only in games, and whether performance drops after several minutes.
- Use the laptop on a hard, unobstructed surface in a cool environment. With the laptop powered down, clear dust from external vents without forcing debris inside.
- Check Task Manager for runaway background processes and compare a quiet or low-power profile with high-performance mode.
- Confirm the AC adapter is recognized. Charging alone does not prove it can provide stable power for high-performance operation.
- Watch for sustained performance loss, fan failure, or sudden shutdowns. Shutdowns are more serious than ordinary fan noise.
Razer’s support guidance recommends cleaning vents, using a cool environment, adjusting fan speed, closing background applications, and updating Windows and drivers. There is no useful universal temperature cutoff for every Blade: readings depend on model, sensor, workload, ambient temperature, and whether a value is a brief peak or sustained.
Internal fan, heatsink, or thermal-paste work is advanced service. It carries risks including stripped Torx/T5 screws, damaged connectors, incorrect thermal-pad thickness, poor heatsink pressure, and battery puncture. Liquid metal can damage nearby components and is not a routine remedy. If external airflow and software checks do not help, use a qualified repair provider.

Repair Windows, graphics drivers, and Synapse in order
First establish when the fault occurs: before login, after login, only when Synapse starts, only in games, only on battery, after sleep, or only on an external display. Timing helps distinguish a Windows service or driver problem from pre-boot hardware trouble.
- Install ordinary Windows updates, then restart.
- From the exact model’s Razer support page, install relevant model-specific drivers. Keep Intel graphics/chipset and NVIDIA graphics packages distinct from audio, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, touchpad, and keyboard components.
- Restart and test the original problem before changing another component.
- If symptoms began immediately after a driver update, record its version and use Device Manager to roll it back where available, or install a known model-appropriate package.
- Repair or reinstall Synapse only after basic drivers work. If the issue began after Synapse starts, test without the affected profile or service where possible.
- Use System Restore or Safe Mode when the fault tracks a recent software change. Back up files before any clean Windows installation or factory recovery.
Razer’s model pages provide the relevant driver and support sections: see the RZ09-0367x page or RZ09-0409x page as applicable. A driver reinstall cannot fix a failed GPU, physically damaged display cable, dead SSD, swollen battery, charging fault, or firmware corruption that occurs before Windows loads.
Update BIOS or EC firmware only when justified
A BIOS or EC update is not a general first-line fix. Consider it only when the update is intended for the exact model, its release notes are relevant, and the laptop is stable enough to complete the process. Record the current BIOS version first.
- Match the updater to the full model code; never cross-flash a similar Blade.
- Keep the laptop connected to wall power throughout; do not update on battery alone.
- Install required Windows updates and prerequisites, close other programs, and follow the model-specific release notes.
- Do not interrupt power or assume downgrade is possible.
Razer’s 2020 Advanced BIOS updater guide and mid-2019 Advanced BIOS updater guide illustrate why procedures are model-specific. Firmware updates may address power management, compatibility, display/GPU behavior, fan control, security, or stability, but the newest BIOS is not a guaranteed fix.
Secure Boot Violation recovery
Razer documents a recovery path involving an empty USB drive, temporary Secure Boot changes in BIOS, copying a recovery application to USB, re-enabling Secure Boot, selecting the USB from the boot menu, and following on-screen instructions. The sequence can vary by model and may affect boot configuration. Follow only the exact model’s current instructions; do not improvise with another model’s firmware or recovery files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Isolate Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, microphone, keyboard, and touchpad faults
- Remove docks and hubs, test an external USB device, and if possible test the affected peripheral on another computer.
- Check whether the fault occurs in Windows only or also before Windows loads or in a bootable environment.
- Reinstall the relevant model-specific driver and check Windows privacy and device permissions.
- Note whether the issue followed sleep, a Windows update, or Synapse installation; test one likely cause at a time.
Razer’s RZ09-0409x guidance includes Windows 11 microphone privacy checks and directs users to Windows sound troubleshooting for audio problems. Keyboard lighting or macro failures can involve Synapse services, profiles, permissions, or firmware, so they do not automatically indicate failed hardware.

Diagnose freezes, blue screens, and unexpected restarts
Record whether the problem occurs in one game, during sleep or wake, on battery or AC, or after a specific update or hardware change. Capture any blue-screen stop code and driver filename before changing software. Microsoft treats these faults separately from blank screens in its unexpected-restart and stop-code guide.
- Review Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer for the time of failure.
- Record BIOS/EC and graphics-driver versions, and whether a lower performance mode changes stability.
- Run Windows Memory Diagnostic and check SSD health if symptoms suggest memory or storage trouble.
- Test whether the system remains stable in Safe Mode, and avoid running stress tests if the laptop is overheating or shutting down.
- Change one variable at a time. Replacing drivers, BIOS, RAM, and SSD together makes the cause harder to identify.
Use factory recovery or reinstall Windows only after backup
Razer’s system recovery-stick process can restore a Blade’s original software configuration and help with persistent Windows problems. Before starting:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Back up personal files, game saves, and application data; confirm cloud synchronization rather than assuming it.
- Save browser passwords and application license information as needed.
- Record the BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled.
- Record BIOS settings, disconnect unnecessary peripherals, and confirm the recovery image matches the exact model.
Recovery can delete user data, remove later applications, and reinstall the original operating-system configuration and Razer utilities. It may fail if the SSD or recovery environment is damaged. If the image is unavailable or unusable, Microsoft installation media and a clean Windows installation are alternatives, but back up first. A successful or failed reinstall does not prove that hardware is healthy.
Know when to stop and seek repair
Arrange Razer or qualified service when the laptop has a swollen battery, charging-port or motherboard symptoms, no pre-boot display, an SSD that BIOS does not detect, or a GPU/display failure that persists outside ordinary Windows troubleshooting. Firmware recovery failure is also a stop condition. Check warranty, parts availability, service eligibility, and a repair quote for your region and model; compare the estimate with the used laptop’s value before authorizing major work.
For an intermittent fault, provide the technician with the exact model code, BIOS/EC and driver versions, stop codes, battery-report file, and the point in startup when the symptom begins. That evidence is more useful than a list of fixes tried all at once.
