Razer Headsets Compared: Kraken, BlackShark, or Barracuda—which should you buy?

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Choose BlackShark for competitive play, Kraken for immersive gaming and comfort, and Barracuda for a headset that moves between home gaming and mobile listening. That is Razer’s own family-level guidance, not an independent performance test. The important qualification is that each family contains different generations and connection options. A Kraken V4 X is a wired USB headset, for example, while a Kraken V4 Pro adds wireless modes, haptics and an OLED control hub.

Use the family labels as a starting point, then select an exact model by checking its microphone, connection method, platform support, weight, battery conditions and regional availability. The comparison below separates documented model specifications from Razer’s broader positioning.

Quick answer: which Razer family fits your setup?

Family Razer’s stated role Choose it when you need Questions to check before buying
BlackShark Esports and competitive performance, with emphasis on audio performance, microphone clarity and sound isolation. A focused gaming headset and, on selected models, a detachable boom mic, active noise cancellation and multiple connection modes. Does the exact SKU include the microphone and ANC features you want? Which platforms and connection modes does it support?
Kraken Immersive gaming, custom-tuned audio, comfort and durability. Gaming immersion, with choices ranging from the wired Kraken V4 X to wireless V4 and feature-heavy V4 Pro. Do you want wireless flexibility, haptics, RGB, a control hub or the lighter wired model?
Barracuda A hybrid headset for home gaming and mobile entertainment. One headset that can use 2.4 GHz wireless at home, Bluetooth on a phone and 3.5 mm analog when needed. Will you use both gaming and mobile modes? Does the exact platform support the included dongle and Bluetooth features?

Razer’s family guide describes these roles at Which is the right Razer gaming headset for you?. Treat those descriptions as product positioning rather than measured evidence of sound quality, comfort or competitive advantage.

What actually separates BlackShark, Kraken and Barracuda?

BlackShark: competition-first features

BlackShark is the line Razer directs toward esports. The family guide highlights the BlackShark V3 Pro with Gen-2 HyperSpeed wireless, a detachable 12 mm HyperClear Full Band microphone, hybrid active noise cancellation, four connectivity modes, THX Spatial Audio and pro-tuned FPS profiles with custom equalizer support. Those are features of the cited V3 Pro example, not specifications that automatically apply to every BlackShark headset.

  • DETACHABLE HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID 9.9MM MIC — The mic’s unidirectional pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise, while its detachable design allows for easy removal when not in use
  • HYPERSPEED WIRELESS — Featuring an ultra-fast 2.4 GHz wireless connection, enjoy high-performance, low-latency competitive play with sound that’s perfectly synced to the game
  • 3 MODES OF CONNECTIVITY — Gain the competitive edge when gaming on PC, console or mobile; seamlessly switch between 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth with SmartSwitch Dual Wireless or stay plugged in for non-stop gaming via USB
  • 7.1 SURROUND SOUND — With our advanced 7.1 surround sound, enjoy true-to-life acoustics that optimizes the game’s sound design to hear everything like being right in the middle of it all

A detachable boom is useful if you alternate between voice chat and ordinary headphone use, but you should verify whether the model you are considering uses a detachable, retractable or fixed microphone. Also check whether its ANC refers to the earcups, the microphone, or both; those functions solve different problems.

Kraken: immersion and a wide range of designs

Kraken covers a broader spread of gaming formats. The current V4 comparison includes the wireless Kraken V4, the wireless Kraken V4 Pro and the wired Kraken V4 X. The Pro model combines HyperSpeed wireless, Bluetooth, USB wired operation and 3.5 mm connectivity through its OLED Control Hub. The regular V4 is lighter and has a much longer stated battery figure when lighting is disabled. The V4 X avoids batteries altogether with USB connectivity.

That range means “Kraken” is not a single performance level. A V4 Pro’s haptics, lighting and hub add hardware and weight that the V4 X does not have, while the V4 X may suit a desk-based PC or console setup better than a wireless model.

Barracuda: home-to-mobile flexibility

The Barracuda product page describes SmartSwitch, which can connect to a 2.4 GHz device and a Bluetooth device at the same time and switch between them. Razer lists USB Type-C wireless at 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5.2 and 3.5 mm analog connectivity, making this the most explicitly hybrid-oriented option of the three families.

  • COMMUNICATE CLEARLY WITH YOUR TEAM – The detachable HyperClear Super Wideband 9.9 mm microphone captures a wider vocal frequency range for natural voice quality and more accurate shot calling
  • CONNECT THE WAY YOU PLAY – Triple-mode connectivity supports 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth, and USB wired modes, while simultaneous wireless (2.4Ghz and Bluetooth) mixing lets you monitor two devices at once

Razer also lists noise-cancelling microphones and passive noise isolation for the headphones. Do not read that as earcup ANC: microphone noise cancellation helps your voice, while passive isolation comes from the physical earcup seal. The page claims up to 40 hours of battery life, a maximum manufacturer figure rather than an independently measured result. Details and replacement-part information are on Razer’s Barracuda product page.

Exact models and published specifications

The following figures come from Razer’s product pages and comparison tables. Battery claims include the operating conditions Razer specifies; changing lighting, haptics or simultaneous connections changes the result.

Model Connections and notable hardware Published battery or weight What the specification means
BlackShark V3 Pro Gen-2 HyperSpeed wireless; detachable 12 mm HyperClear Full Band mic; hybrid ANC; four connectivity modes; THX Spatial Audio; FPS profiles and custom EQ listed by Razer. Not stated in the supplied product information. Confirm the exact platform, connection list and regional SKU before purchase; these features should not be generalized to every BlackShark model.
Kraken V4 Pro HyperSpeed wireless, Bluetooth, USB wired and 3.5 mm through the OLED Control Hub; haptics, lighting and hub controls. Up to 50 hours with haptics and lighting off on 2.4 GHz; up to 45 hours with those features off while using 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth simultaneously; up to 13 hours with haptics and lighting on over 2.4 GHz. Weight: 397 g, excluding the OLED Control Hub. These are Razer’s maximum figures under the stated conditions, not a common runtime for every mode.
Kraken V4 Wireless model in the V4 comparison; check the exact product page for the supplied adapter and platform details. Up to 70 hours with lighting off on 2.4 GHz; up to 35 hours with lighting on. Weight: 350 g. Turning RGB lighting on cuts the published maximum in half; compare like-for-like settings.
Kraken V4 X Wired USB Type-C or Type-A through the included adapter. Weight: 310 g. No battery-life figure because it is wired. A straightforward option for a fixed gaming station, provided your device accepts the required USB connection.
Barracuda 2.4 GHz USB Type-C wireless, Bluetooth 5.2, 3.5 mm analog; SmartSwitch can maintain 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth connections together. Up to 40 hours, according to Razer’s product page. The 40-hour number is a maximum claim. Confirm whether your console, phone or computer supports each mode you plan to use.

The Kraken figures and model comparison appear on Razer’s Kraken V4 Pro technical-specification page. The listed weights are manufacturer values; the Pro figure excludes its control hub, so it is not a complete carried-weight comparison with a bare headset.

Choose by the way you will use the headset

For ranked shooters and team communication

Start with BlackShark, especially if you need a boom microphone, sound isolation, FPS-oriented profiles or low-latency wireless. The V3 Pro feature set is the clearest example of that design brief. Before ordering, verify the exact microphone construction, supported console or PC connection and whether the model’s noise feature is earcup ANC, microphone processing or both.

For long single-player sessions and general gaming

Kraken is the more natural starting point when immersion and comfort are your priorities. Compare the V4 and V4 Pro rather than assuming the family shares one battery or weight. The V4 Pro’s haptics and OLED hub are meaningful only if you want those controls and effects; the regular V4’s 350 g listed weight and longer lighting-off battery claim may fit a simpler wireless setup better.

For gaming at home and listening on a phone

Barracuda makes sense when the same headset must move between a 2.4 GHz dongle and Bluetooth. SmartSwitch is useful if you want to remain connected to both devices, but it is not a reason to buy the headset if you will use only one wired PC connection. Check how your particular console handles Bluetooth: many consoles restrict Bluetooth audio even when a phone supports it.

For a wired desk setup

The Kraken V4 X is the clearest wired choice among the documented models. Its 310 g listed weight and USB Type-C or Type-A operation remove battery management, but you must have a compatible USB port and enough cable reach. A 3.5 mm headset can be more flexible with controllers and older devices, so compare the actual ports on your platform rather than choosing by family name.

Connectivity and platform checklist

Wireless labels are not interchangeable. A 2.4 GHz USB dongle is generally used for a dedicated gaming link, Bluetooth is intended for compatible phones, tablets and computers, and USB wired mode may carry audio while also charging or controlling the headset. A 3.5 mm connection is analog and depends on the device’s jack and microphone wiring.

  1. List every device you will use. Include the exact console model, PC, phone and any handheld system.
  2. Match each device to a supported connection. Check whether it accepts USB Type-C, USB Type-A through an adapter, Bluetooth audio, 3.5 mm analog or a proprietary wireless dongle.
  3. Check simultaneous-use behavior. Barracuda’s SmartSwitch is specifically described for concurrent 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth connections; do not assume another model can mix sources in the same way.
  4. Confirm the regional SKU. Razer’s Europe catalog currently lists BlackShark V3 Pro, BlackShark V3, BlackShark V3 X HyperSpeed, Barracuda X Chroma, Kraken V4 Pro, Kraken V4 and Kraken V4 X. That is a Europe-market snapshot, not proof that every model is sold in your country.
  5. Read the exact specification page before checkout. Generation names, included adapters, supported platforms and microphone designs can differ inside one family.

Microphones and noise features: avoid the common mix-up

A boom microphone places the voice pickup near your mouth; detachable and retractable designs differ in how easily you can remove or hide it. An integrated microphone is convenient for mobile use but may not suit frequent team communication. Razer’s BlackShark V3 Pro example uses a detachable 12 mm microphone, while the Barracuda page describes noise-cancelling microphones without making the same detachable-boom claim.

There are two separate noise questions:

  • Headphone noise control: ANC reduces outside sound reaching you. The BlackShark V3 Pro guide entry lists hybrid ANC. The Barracuda information supplied here lists passive isolation instead.
  • Microphone noise control: processing attempts to reduce background sound in what teammates hear. It does not make your own listening environment quiet.

Ask which of these you need before paying extra for a feature label.

Battery, weight and feature trade-offs

Battery comparisons are only fair when settings match. Kraken V4’s stated maximum falls from up to 70 hours with lighting off to up to 35 hours with lighting on. Kraken V4 Pro is listed at up to 50 hours with haptics and lighting off on 2.4 GHz, up to 45 hours under simultaneous 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth, and up to 13 hours with both haptics and lighting enabled over 2.4 GHz. Those numbers illustrate the cost of effects and extra radios; they are not independent endurance tests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weight also needs a consistent basis. Razer lists 310 g for the wired Kraken V4 X, 350 g for Kraken V4 and 397 g for Kraken V4 Pro without its OLED Control Hub. A hub sitting on your desk does not add to the headset’s head weight, but it is still part of the system you must place and connect.

Common buying mistakes and how to prevent them

  • Buying by family name alone: write down the generation and full model suffix before comparing listings.
  • Assuming every BlackShark has ANC or every Kraken lasts 70 hours: attach each feature to the exact model and its operating condition.
  • Comparing maximum battery claims as if they were lab results: keep lighting, haptics, radios and volume conditions visible beside the number.
  • Confusing microphone cancellation with ANC: decide whether you need cleaner outgoing voice, quieter incoming audio or both.
  • Ignoring adapters and ports: check whether your device has USB Type-C, USB Type-A, a 3.5 mm jack or a controller jack that supports headset microphones.
  • Assuming catalog availability is global: the current list cited above is from Razer Europe; check your country’s product page and warranty terms.
  • Expecting independent test conclusions: the specifications here are manufacturer statements. No hands-on listening, comfort, microphone or battery measurements establish a winner between the families.

A practical decision path

  1. Choose the use case: competitive performance points to BlackShark, immersive general gaming to Kraken, and mixed home/mobile use to Barracuda.
  2. Choose the connection: decide whether you need 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth, USB wired, 3.5 mm or more than one of these.
  3. Choose the microphone: specify boom, detachable, retractable or integrated before comparing prices.
  4. Choose noise handling: separate earcup ANC from microphone noise reduction and passive isolation.
  5. Choose acceptable weight and features: compare the documented V4 weights and decide whether haptics, RGB or an OLED hub justify the added hardware.
  6. Verify the listing: confirm generation, platform compatibility, included dongle or adapter, regional stock and replacement-part support on the exact product page.

Bottom line

There is no single “best Razer headset” across these families. BlackShark is the focused competitive option when its exact model’s microphone, ANC and wireless support match your platform. Kraken offers the broadest immersion-oriented spread, from the wired V4 X to the haptic V4 Pro. Barracuda is the specialist choice for switching between a 2.4 GHz gaming device and Bluetooth mobile audio. Select the model and connection combination that matches your actual devices; the family badge alone is not enough.
