Important: Razer Synapse 3 is now legacy software. Razer ended Synapse 3 updates and cloud services on February 3, 2026. The instructions below apply to an existing installation that still detects your keyboard. For new installations, check your keyboard’s Synapse 4 compatibility before removing Synapse 3.
Use Synapse 3’s LIGHTING tab for one color or a simple preset. To assign different colors to individual keys or groups, open STUDIO, also called Chroma Studio, add a Static effect, paint the selected keys, and click SAVE.

Not every Razer keyboard offers identical controls. Per-key RGB keyboards provide the finest control, while zone-based models may let you color only larger regions. Razer Blade laptop options also vary by model. Check the keyboard’s manual or model-specific support page before assuming that every key can be addressed separately. Razer’s Chroma system is described as supporting up to 16.8 million colors, but the visible result depends on the keyboard’s LEDs, keycaps, brightness, and effect layers. Razer Chroma overview.
Set one color across the keyboard
- Open Razer Synapse 3.
- Select your keyboard from the device list.
- Open the LIGHTING tab.
- Choose Static, if that effect is available.
- Open the color control and select the desired color.
- Adjust brightness if the control is available.
- Save or apply the change, then test the keyboard after closing Synapse.
The exact effect names and controls can differ by device. The LIGHTING page is intended for basic brightness, on/off, and effect controls; it is not the usual route for assigning separate colors to individual keys.
#1 Best Overall
- YELLOW MECHANICAL LINEAR SWITCHES: With zero distance between actuation and reset points at 1.2mm and only 45g of force required — enjoy instant, rapid-fire inputs that are just as quiet thanks to built-in sound dampeners
- 6 DEDICATED MACRO KEYS: Expand the arsenal of commands with a set of easy-access macro keys that can be programmed to peferred playstyle
- MULTI-FUNCTION ROLLER and SECONDARY MEDIA KEYS: Pause, play, skip, and tweak everything from brightness to volume for ultimate convenience
- CHROMA RGB PER-KEY LIGHTING: With a switch construction that promotes brighter, even lighting, customize each key from over 16.8 million colors and effects—including dynamic lighting for hundreds of Chroma-integrated games
- DOUBLESHOT ABS KEYCAPS: Using a doubleshot molding process to ensure the labeling never wears off while having extra-thick walls to withstand intense gaming
Create a custom per-key color scheme
For a fixed layout such as red WASD keys, blue number-row keys, and white modifiers, use Chroma Studio.
- Open Synapse 3 and click STUDIO at the top.
- Under ADD EFFECT, add Static.
- Select the Static effect in the EFFECT LAYER area.
- Select a key or group of keys on the keyboard canvas.
- Choose a color in the effect settings or color picker.
- Use the Pen tool to apply that color to the selected LEDs.
- Use Paint Bucket when you want to fill a continuous region supported by the canvas.
- Repeat the selection and color process for each key group.
- Click SAVE in the bottom-right corner.
- Return to the keyboard’s lighting or profile controls and confirm that the saved Chroma effect is active.
Chroma Studio includes a Selector for selecting LEDs or keys, a Pen for applying the current effect, and a Paint Bucket for filling a continuous region. Razer’s Chroma Studio instructions document these controls and the save process.
Example: three-color gaming layout
- Add one Static effect.
- Select WASD and apply red.
- Select the number row and apply blue.
- Select modifier keys such as Shift, Ctrl, Alt, and Space and apply white.
- Leave the remaining keys a darker neutral color, or assign another group.
- Save, activate the effect, and test it outside the editor.
On a zone-based keyboard, the canvas may select an entire hardware zone rather than individual keys. In that case, a per-key pattern is not possible through Synapse 3 even if the keyboard appears in the application.

Start with Static and make sure the color map works before adding animation. Depending on the device, Synapse 3 may offer effects including:
Rank #2
- LOW-PROFILE KEYS — With slimmer keycaps and shorter switches, enjoy natural hand positioning that allows for long hours of use with little strain
- MECHA-MEMBRANE SWITCHES — Fusing the snappy, clicky feedback of a mechanical switch with the familiar feel of a conventional keyboard, each keystroke is as satisfying as it is precise
- UV-COATED KEYCAPS — More durable than regular keycaps, the UV coating ensures more fade-resistant legends and greater protection against wear and tear from frequent use
- BACKLIT DEDICATED MEDIA KEYS — Configure them to pause, play, skip and adjust everything from brightness to volume for ultimate convenience
- MAGNETIC SOFT TOUCH WRIST REST — Designed to seamlessly snap to the keyboard, the soft-touch wrist rest provides ample comfort and support for the wrists that is vital during long periods of use
- Breathing: slowly pulses one or more colors.
- Reactive: illuminates keys when they are pressed.
- Ripple: spreads light outward from a pressed key.
- Wave: moves continuously in a direction across the keyboard.
- Spectrum Cycling: cycles automatically through the color spectrum.
- Fire: creates a warm animated effect rather than a precise fixed layout.
- Starlight: creates intermittent, randomized illumination.
To add animation, use ADD EFFECT, choose the desired effect, select the keys or regions where it should appear, and adjust the controls that Synapse exposes for that effect. Speed, direction, duration, and color options are not available for every effect or keyboard.
Understand effect layers
Effects appear in the EFFECT LAYER area. Razer prioritizes layers from top to bottom, so a higher layer can visually override a lower layer when both affect the same keys.
For predictable fixed colors, use one Static layer first. If you add Reactive, Wave, or another animation over the same keys, the animated layer may hide the Static colors. If colors disappear or look wrong, inspect the layer order and restrict each effect to the intended keys. Moving the Static layer higher can help, but the most reliable solution is often to avoid overlapping effects.

Rank #3
- FASTER THAN TRADITIONAL MECHANICAL SWITCHES — Razer Linear Optical switch technology uses optical beam-based actuation, registering key presses at the speed of light (15-30% shorter actuation distance than other linear switches at 1.0 mm)
- ULTIMATE PERSONALIZATION & GAMING IMMERSION WITH RAZER CHROMA RGB LIGHTING — Fully syncs with popular games, Razer hardware, Philips Hue, and gear from 30+ partners; supports 16.8 million colors on individually backlit keys from the world’s largest lighting ecosystem for gaming devices
- QUALITY, ALUMINUM CONSTRUCTION — Covered with a matte, aluminum top frame for increased structural integrity
- OIL-RESISTANT DOUBLESHOT PBT KEYCAPS — Made of textured, high-grade PBT for a more durable and textured finish less prone to long-term grime buildup
- FULLY PROGRAMMABLE MACROS — Razer Hypershift allows for all keys and keypress combinations to be remapped to execute complex commands
Test the result by:
- Pressing keys from each colored group.
- Closing and reopening Synapse.
- Checking the active profile.
- Launching the intended game, if the scheme is application-specific.
- Closing the game to confirm whether the profile changes back.
Profile behavior and application switching can vary by Synapse version, device, and game. Where supported, create or select a Synapse profile for the game and associate the saved lighting effect with it. Do not assume that every Chroma device will switch identically.
Troubleshooting
There is no STUDIO tab
- Confirm that the keyboard appears in Synapse.
- Check Synapse’s modules or dashboard for Chroma Studio.
- Restart Synapse and reconnect the keyboard.
- Check the model’s manual for advanced lighting support.
- Confirm that you are using the existing Synapse 3 installation rather than a different Synapse version.
The missing tab may indicate that Chroma Studio is not installed, the device is unsupported for advanced effects, Synapse is damaged, or the keyboard is not detected. Avoid casually uninstalling Synapse 3 in 2026: removing it may leave you on Synapse 4 or without the legacy configuration path.
The keyboard is detected but the lighting does not change
- Make sure an effect was added under EFFECT LAYER.
- Confirm that at least one key or LED region is selected.
- Apply the color with the appropriate tool.
- Click SAVE.
- Check that brightness is not set to zero.
- Inspect layer order for an overriding effect.
- Close games and other RGB utilities that may control the keyboard.
- Check whether the keyboard has a hardware mode that disables lighting.
The entire keyboard changes instead of selected keys
You may have changed the global setting on the LIGHTING page rather than painting keys in Chroma Studio. It is also possible that the selected effect is global, the wrong canvas region was selected, or the keyboard exposes only hardware zones. Per-key customization requires a compatible device and Chroma Studio.

The custom colors disappear after saving
Confirm that the correct device and profile are active, the effect layer is enabled, and another layer is not covering the colors. A game or other Chroma-enabled application may take control of the lighting. Also check whether the keyboard was disconnected or Synapse restarted.

Synapse 3 cloud synchronization is no longer supported after February 3, 2026. Do not expect a saved configuration to synchronize between PCs through the old cloud service. Razer’s Synapse 3 support FAQ explains the cutoff and migration path.
The keyboard is not listed
Possible causes include an unsupported model, an incompatible USB hub or port, a detection problem, another RGB utility taking control, or a requirement for a different Synapse version. A non-Chroma or single-color backlit keyboard cannot display a multi-color RGB scheme. Use the model-specific Razer support page rather than assuming all Razer keyboards have the same features.
The selected color looks different on the physical keys
LED diffusion, keycap material, brightness, hardware differences, and overlapping effects can change the visible result. A color-picker value should not be treated as a guarantee that the physical key will look identical.

Synapse 3 versus Synapse 4 in 2026
Razer says Synapse 3 stopped receiving updates and cloud-service support on February 3, 2026. An already-installed setup may continue configuring supported devices locally, but cloud synchronization between PCs is disabled. Razer directs users toward Synapse 4 and its Profile Migration Tool for supported hardware.

Stay with Synapse 3 if it is already installed, detects your keyboard, and you only need local lighting configuration. Consider Synapse 4 if Synapse 3 was removed, your keyboard is supported by Synapse 4, or you need Razer’s current software path. Do not assume that every Synapse 3 keyboard or profile behaves identically in Synapse 4; check compatibility first.
Razer’s current installation guidance also warns that installing newer Razer applications can uninstall Synapse 3. Back up or migrate profiles before removing the legacy software. See Razer’s Synapse installation guidance.
Bottom line
Use LIGHTING for a single color or preset effect. Use STUDIO, a Static effect, the Selector/Pen/Paint Bucket tools, and the SAVE button for a multi-color per-key or zoned scheme. Because Synapse 3 is legacy software, keep a working installation intact unless you have checked Synapse 4 compatibility and are ready to migrate.
