Razer’s 1999 gaming-mouse icon is back as a $1,337 wireless collector’s edition

Razer revived its 1999 Boomslang with modern wireless hardware, but the $1,337 price is mostly for scarcity, nostalgia and collector presentation—not gaming performance.

Razer’s Boomslang 20th Anniversary Edition is not a normal $1,337 gaming mouse. It is a limited, individually serialized collector’s item built around a modern wireless sensor and switches, wrapped in the distinctive transparent, snake-head-inspired shape of Razer’s original 1999 Boomslang.

Razer produced just 1,337 units worldwide and priced the mouse at $1,337, a deliberate “1337” or “leet” reference. U.S. preorders opened on February 10, 2026, and sold out rapidly. As of August 18, 2026, Razer’s product page showed a notification form rather than a normal purchase option, so buyers should treat retail availability as unavailable unless Razer announces another release.

The short version

  • Product: Razer Boomslang 20th Anniversary Edition
  • Original inspiration: Razer Boomslang, launched in 1999
  • Price: $1,337 in the United States
  • Production: 1,337 individually serialized units worldwide
  • Announcement: December 9, 2025
  • U.S. preorders: February 10, 2026, at 8 a.m. Pacific
  • Current status: The U.S. allocation sold out; Razer currently directs visitors to availability notifications
  • Best suited to: Razer collectors, original Boomslang owners and gaming-history enthusiasts

For everyone else, the price is difficult to justify. The Boomslang has contemporary hardware, but its value comes mainly from limited production, nostalgia, serialization and presentation—not from delivering anything close to 13 times the practical performance of a $100–$200 flagship mouse.

Razer uses premium-looking finishes and leather-style details, although independent coverage has identified those details as PU leather, not genuine leather. That matters less to the buying decision than the larger point: part of the price pays for the display object and packaging, not just the electronics.

The number 1,337 is doing double duty. It represents the production limit and references “leet,” the gaming shorthand for “elite.” The result is a product whose price is an identity statement as much as a specification.

Modern hardware inside a retro shell

Under the translucent retro exterior, the Anniversary Edition uses current high-end Razer components:

Razer’s launch materials describe eight customizable controls, while its support documentation lists six programmable buttons. Because the available official sources use different counts, it is safer not to treat those figures as interchangeable.

  • RAZER FOCUS PRO 35K OPTICAL SENSOR GEN-2 — Experience best-in-class tracking performance on a wider variety of surfaces including glass, supported by intelligent functions and 1-DPI step adjustments for more granular aim and control
  • UP TO 140 HOUR BATTERY ON RAZER HYPERSPEED WIRELESS — Enjoy smooth, lag-free performance for non-stop play or unlock a true 8000 Hz polling rate with the Razer Mouse Dock Pro or HyperPolling Wireless Dongle (both sold separately)

  • 13-ZONE CHROMA LIGHTING WITH FULL UNDERGLOW — Customize each zone from over 16.8 million colors and countless lighting effects, and experience greater immersion as they react dynamically with over 200 Chroma-integrated games

The 45,000-DPI sensor and 8,000-Hz polling rate are maximum capabilities, not guarantees of a visible advantage in every game or on every computer. Most players will notice shape, weight and handling long before they benefit from headline numbers at the extreme end of the specification sheet.

The important connectivity compromises

This is not a flexible travel mouse. According to Razer’s support documentation and independent reviews, the Boomslang Anniversary Edition:

  • Has no USB port and cannot be used in wired mode.
  • Has no Bluetooth.
  • Relies on the included Mouse Dock Pro for wireless reception and charging.
  • Does not work with ordinary Razer HyperSpeed or HyperPolling dongles.
  • Can also charge on a compatible Qi wireless charging pad.

That dedicated dock is part of the collector package, but it is also a practical dependency. Lose or damage it and the mouse becomes less convenient to use, even though Qi charging remains an alternative. Basic pointer operation does not require Synapse, but profiles, macros, DPI settings and advanced lighting controls require Razer Synapse 4.

How it compares with the original Boomslang

Feature Original Boomslang Anniversary Edition
Era 1999 and early 2000s Modern wireless hardware
Tracking Opto-mechanical ball system 45,000-DPI optical sensor
Connection PS/2 or USB Wireless through dedicated dock
Polling Not comparable with modern high-polling wireless Up to 8,000 Hz
Switches Mechanical-era design Gen-4 optical switches
Lighting Translucent appearance Nine-zone Chroma RGB underglow
Charging Wired connection Mouse Dock Pro or Qi pad
Ergonomics Distinctive snake-head silhouette Similar retro silhouette with modern materials

Razer describes the original Boomslang as the world’s first gaming mouse. That is a Razer marketing claim, rather than an uncontested historical fact. What is clear is that the 1999 model was unusually ambitious for its period: its opto-mechanical tracking system and advertised sensitivity of up to 2,000 DPI stood out in an era when most mice were not designed specifically for gaming.

  • MECHANICAL MOUSE SWITCHES GEN-2 — Rated with a 60-million click lifespan, the switches feature gold-plated contact points for greater resistance against wear and tear to enjoy crisp execution that always comes in clutch

The revival modernizes the electronics without abandoning the physical identity. That is its appeal—and its central compromise.

Why the anniversary wording is confusing

Calling this a “25-year-old mouse” is an understandable reference to the age of the design, but it is not precise in 2026. The original Boomslang launched in 1999, making it roughly 27 years removed from the current product.

Razer calls the new device a 20th Anniversary Edition because the anniversary refers to the modern Razer company’s 2005 revival, not simply to 20 years since the original mouse launch. In other words, the Anniversary Edition celebrates Razer’s later company history while resurrecting a much older product design.

Is it actually good as a daily mouse?

Technically, the answer is yes—but that does not make it a sensible purchase for ordinary gaming.

Independent reviews from WIRED and PC Gamer found the sensor, optical switches, wireless performance and charging system to be contemporary. The physical design is more divisive. WIRED describes the mouse as weighing more than 100 grams, which is heavy compared with the lightweight trend among current enthusiast and competitive mice.

The mirrored shape is genuinely ambidextrous, but “ambidextrous” does not mean universally ergonomic. The broad, angular shell can feel awkward to users accustomed to modern, sculpted or ultralight designs. A longtime Boomslang owner may specifically enjoy that familiar silhouette; a competitive player choosing purely for comfort and speed may not.

That makes the fairest verdict a qualified one: the Boomslang is a capable modern mouse in a polarizing, ergonomically dated body. Its limitations—weight, no Bluetooth, no USB fallback and dedicated-dock dependence—matter more to most buyers than its 45,000-DPI ceiling.

Who should buy it?

It makes sense for:

  • Collectors of Razer hardware or gaming history.
  • People who owned the original Boomslang and want a functional commemorative piece.
  • Buyers who value the serial number, display frame and limited production more than price-to-performance.
  • Collectors who want a display object that can still function as a mouse.

It does not make sense for:

  • Competitive players seeking the lightest possible mouse.
  • Anyone who needs Bluetooth, USB charging or wired fallback.
  • Buyers evaluating mice by sensor performance per dollar.
  • Users who dislike large, heavy or symmetrical shapes.
  • Anyone assuming a sellout automatically makes the mouse a profitable investment.

For a conventional gaming purchase, a modern model such as the Razer DeathAdder V4 Pro or Razer Viper V3 Pro is a more rational direction, depending on whether you want an ergonomic or symmetrical shape. Those products do not provide the Boomslang’s collector value, but that is precisely why they are better comparisons for performance-focused buyers.

Availability and resale-market warnings

MacRumors reported that the U.S. preorder allocation sold out after preorders opened on February 10, 2026. Razer’s product page now presents a notification route and says availability is limited to Razer.com and select RazerStores while stock lasts. Treat the original run as sold out unless Razer confirms a restock or another release.

Secondary-market listings may appear, but asking prices are not completed-sale prices. WIRED observed listings approaching $2,000 shortly after the sellout in March 2026; that is historical context, not a verified August 2026 valuation.

If you consider a resale purchase, confirm all of the following before paying a premium:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The mouse’s individual serial number.
  • The original receipt or credible proof of purchase.
  • The Mouse Dock Pro and its receiver functionality.
  • The illuminated display frame.
  • The original packaging and accessories.
  • The condition of the shell, dock and display components.
  • Whether warranty or support can be transferred or accessed.

A mouse sold without its dock or display frame may still work, but it is not the complete collector package. Counterfeits, damaged presentation pieces and incomplete listings are additional risks when a limited product changes hands.

Verdict

Razer’s Boomslang 20th Anniversary Edition is best understood as a luxury collectible with a modern gaming mouse inside it. The 45,000-DPI sensor, 8,000-Hz wireless polling and Gen-4 optical switches make it technically current, but they do not explain a $1,337 price on their own.

Buy it only if the Boomslang’s history, serial-numbered scarcity and elaborate presentation are worth more to you than conventional performance per dollar. If you simply want a fast, comfortable wireless gaming mouse, spend your money elsewhere.
