Common messages include:
- “This application failed to start because rdchost.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because rdchost.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading rdchost.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “rdchost.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “rdchost.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
rdchost.dll is a genuine Microsoft file named RDSHost Client Module, associated with Remote Desktop and Terminal Services components from legacy Windows releases. The documented versions are 32-bit Windows XP-era builds, commonly found in %WINDIR%System32.
Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, this file may be unexpected, left over from old software, or being requested by a legacy application rather than being a normal component of the current operating system.
First, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Restart the computer afterward. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the component source that SFC uses. See Microsoft’s SFC and DISM repair procedure.

If the error remains, determine whether it comes from Windows itself or from an old program. A missing rdchost.dll message on a current Windows installation does not automatically mean that Windows 10 or Windows 11 should contain this file.
What rdchost.dll is
The file’s internal description is RDSHost Client Module. Its publisher metadata identifies Microsoft Corporation, and it belongs to Microsoft Windows and Remote Desktop-related system components.
The strongest public file evidence points to Windows XP and related legacy Windows releases. Commonly indexed builds include:
| Architecture | Version | Reported size |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit | 5.1.2600.5512 | About 0.14 MB |
| 32-bit | 5.1.2600.2180 | About 0.14 MB |
On the legacy systems where it is documented, the normal location is:
%WINDIR%System32
That does not mean every Windows version includes the file. In particular, a download page advertising an XP-era DLL as a universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 component is not proof that Microsoft ships it with those systems.
rdchost.dll is also not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET component. Reinstalling those packages normally will not restore it.
What the error message actually means
“rdchost.dll was not found” or “is missing”
Windows or an application requested the file and could not find it in the locations used for DLL loading. The file may have been deleted, quarantined, removed during cleanup, or requested by software that expects an older Windows environment.
“The specified module could not be found”
This message does not always mean that rdchost.dll itself is absent. A dependency required by the DLL may be missing, or Windows may be unable to load the file because it is damaged or incompatible.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Missing or corrupted”
The file may exist but fail validation or loading. System-file damage, an interrupted update, disk errors, or an incorrect replacement can cause this result.
“Not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This commonly indicates an architecture mismatch, incompatible version, damaged binary, or a DLL placed in the wrong location. It is not proof that the file is malware, but a Microsoft-named file outside a trusted Windows or application directory deserves investigation.
Before repairing anything, identify the source
The repair is different if Windows requests the file during startup than if an old application requests it after you double-click a program.
Check the operating-system version
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
- Record whether the system is Windows 10 or Windows 11 and note the edition shown.
Then check the system architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
The documented rdchost.dll builds are 32-bit. That matters because Windows uses different filesystem views for 32-bit and 64-bit programs. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system files normally belong to SysWOW64, while 64-bit system files use System32. The names are counterintuitive.

Do not copy one DLL into both folders. A 32-bit application may see a redirected filesystem view, and forcing files into both locations can make diagnosis harder.
Check where the error originates
Ask these questions:
- Does the message appear before the desktop loads?
- Does it appear when opening a particular old application?
- Did it begin after antivirus cleanup, disk cleanup, an update, or removal of malware?
- Is the named program still installed?
- Does the application have its own folder containing a copy of
rdchost.dll?
If only one legacy program reports the error, repair that program before attempting manual Windows-file replacement.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file is genuinely part of the Windows installation or protected system files have been damaged.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
When DISM completes successfully, run System File Checker in the same administrator window:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Restart Windows after both commands finish, then repeat the action that produced the error.
Understand the result
SFC may report that:
- It found no integrity violations.
- It found corrupt files and repaired them.
- It found corrupt files but could not repair some of them.
If files were repaired, restart and test the application again. If SFC says it could not repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and run sfc /scannow once more. If the result is unchanged, use System Restore or installation media rather than downloading an individual DLL.

Manually hunting through component versions and repeating SFC/DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues and show what needs attention; its repair actions require the full version, and it is not required for this Microsoft repair process.

The original installation media may be required if SFC cannot locate a valid replacement.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete servicing operation can leave protected files in an inconsistent state.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
After restarting, run DISM and SFC again if the error continues. Windows Update may repair the servicing source, but it is not a reason to obtain rdchost.dll from an unofficial download page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Security software can remove a file during malware cleanup. It can also quarantine a legitimate-looking file if the file is in an unusual location or has been modified.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand an entry to view its path, threat classification, and available actions.
Only consider restoring a quarantined file if all of the following are credible:
- The original path is a legitimate Windows or application directory.
- The file is digitally signed by Microsoft.
- The operating system and architecture match.
- A trusted repair or application installation identifies the file as required.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can cause Defender to detect it again. If the item was found in a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unfamiliar application folder, do not restore it. Update Defender, run a full scan, and repair Windows or the affected application from trusted media. Microsoft documents this process in Protection History in Windows Security.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the program that requests the file
If the error appears only when starting one old application, the program may be requesting a legacy Windows DLL that does not belong on a modern installation.

- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Return to the application’s entry.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the application from its original vendor installer or trusted installation media.
Do not copy rdchost.dll beside the executable merely because that makes the message disappear. Windows searches for DLLs according to defined application and system rules, and an incorrect local copy can override a compatible system or vendor file. Microsoft explains the behavior in its documentation on DLL search order.
If the application was designed for Windows XP, use its documented compatibility settings or contact its vendor. Reinstalling the program remains the definitive repair when the program’s own files are missing.
Fix 5: Check Windows Features, but do not treat them as a DLL download
Some older software depends on Windows components that are optional or disabled. Enabling a Windows feature can restore a supported component, but it will not necessarily install an XP-era rdchost.dll.
Check optional Windows features
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available Windows Features.
- Enable only a feature specifically required by the application’s documentation.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable random legacy features to test whether they contain the file. If the application requires Remote Desktop access, configure it through Settings → System → Remote Desktop on supported editions, but do not assume enabling Remote Desktop will restore a missing DLL.

Fix 6: Use System Restore if the problem is recent
System Restore can roll back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs to an earlier restore point while normally preserving personal files.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the
rdchost.dllerror began. - Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.
Use the Microsoft System Restore guidance if the wizard is unavailable or reports that no restore points exist.
System Restore may be disabled, or restore points may have been deleted. If no suitable point exists, continue with installation media or a supported Windows recovery option.
Fix 7: Repair from official installation media
Use installation media when DISM and SFC cannot repair the installation, especially if the error follows a damaged update or broader system corruption.
For a modern Windows installation, use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture. Start the supported repair or recovery process from Microsoft’s Windows installation and recovery options.
For a genuine Windows XP system, the appropriate source is matching original Windows XP installation media or a valid official service-pack package. Do not use a DLL website as a substitute. The source must match the edition, service-pack level, language, and architecture.

Manual extraction is a controlled recovery technique, not a general fix. A replacement must come from verified matching media or an identical trusted installation. Copying a random file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can introduce an incompatible version or malware.

Fix 8: Check drivers only when the timing points to a driver change
rdchost.dll is not a graphics or chipset driver. Device Manager will not normally restore this file. However, if the error began immediately after a Remote Desktop, display, chipset, or system update, check whether a driver change caused broader system problems.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or System devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Use Roll Back Driver only if the button is available and the problem began after that update.
- Otherwise select Update Driver and follow the Windows prompts.
- Restart the computer.
Avoid installing a driver from an unrelated download page. Hunting through hardware models and guessing which of many drivers is stale can be repetitive. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the scan shows what it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional and is not required to repair rdchost.dll.
Verify a file before trusting it
If a copy of rdchost.dll already exists, inspect it rather than replacing it.
Check the path
In File Explorer, right-click the file and select Properties. A legacy Windows copy may be associated with the Windows directory, but a Microsoft-named file in a temporary folder, download folder, or unrelated writable directory is suspicious.
Check the publisher
- Open the file’s Properties.
- Select the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signer.
- Select Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
A filename alone proves nothing. Malware can use a legitimate filename.
Check architecture and version
Open the Details tab and review the file description, product information, and version. The documented builds are 32-bit XP-era versions. A file advertised for a modern 64-bit system without matching product and signature information should not be trusted.
Do not rely only on the file size or version number. Signature, path, operating-system context, and the program requesting the DLL all matter.
Why regsvr32 rdchost.dll is usually wrong
Do not use this as a routine repair:
regsvr32 rdchost.dll
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a self-registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a deleted file, repair damaged binary data, or fix every DLL-loading error.
If registration is attempted on a DLL that is not a self-registering COM component, it may produce an error without addressing the real problem. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration utility, not a file-recovery command.
Use it only when Microsoft or the affected software vendor specifically instructs you to register that component.
Avoid these common mistakes
- Do not download
rdchost.dllfrom a random DLL site. - Do not copy an unknown file into
System32orSysWOW64. - Do not place both 32-bit and 64-bit copies into multiple folders.
- Do not reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET expecting them to contain this Windows DLL.
- Do not use registry cleaners to reconstruct a missing binary.
- Do not assume the error proves malware or a damaged registry.
- Do not restore a quarantined file without checking its original path and signature.
- Do not assume that a Windows 10 or Windows 11 download claim reflects Microsoft distribution.
- Do not invent a specific game or application as the cause when the error does not identify one.
FAQ
Is rdchost.dll legitimate?
Yes. rdchost.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows file named RDSHost Client Module. The documented evidence associates it with legacy Remote Desktop and Terminal Services components, especially Windows XP-era installations.
Is rdchost.dll malware?
The filename is not malware by itself. Verify the path, Microsoft signature, version, and reason the file is present. A Microsoft-named DLL outside a legitimate Windows or application directory should be scanned and investigated.
Should I download rdchost.dll?
No. A third-party copy may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be incompatible with the requesting program, or conceal a deeper Windows or application problem. Use SFC, DISM, System Restore, official installation media, or the original application installer.
Does Windows 11 include rdchost.dll?
The strongest public evidence points to Windows XP-era 32-bit builds. Do not assume that Windows 11 or Windows 10 should contain this file. If a modern application requests it, identify and repair that application.
Is rdchost.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The commonly indexed versions are 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, filesystem redirection affects whether a 32-bit process sees System32 or SysWOW64. Never choose a folder based only on its name.
Why does the message say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be damaged, or the architecture may be incompatible. The message does not prove that rdchost.dll itself is absent.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will registering the DLL fix the problem?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for self-registering DLLs and is not a general repair command. Restore the file through Windows repair or reinstall the program that requires it.
What if SFC cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If it still cannot repair the installation, use System Restore, matching installation media, or a supported Windows recovery method. On a legacy XP system, use matching original media rather than a modern runtime package.
What if the error appears only in one old program?
Repair or reinstall that program from its original installer. If the program was built for Windows XP, it may not be compatible with modern Windows even after its missing files are restored.
