hwxkor.dll is missing when Windows or an older application cannot find the Microsoft Korean Handwriting Recognizer component. The error may appear as one of these messages:
- “This application failed to start because hwxkor.dll was not found.”
- “hwxkor.dll file cannot be loaded. Module was not found.”
- “hwxkor.dll could not be loaded.”
- “hwxkor.dll is corrupted.”
- “Cannot find hwxkor.dll.”
- “[path]hwxkor.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
hwxkor.dll is not a general-purpose gaming DLL, Visual C++ file, DirectX component, or .NET runtime. It is associated with Microsoft’s Korean Handwriting Recognizer, a legacy Tablet PC handwriting component documented for Windows XP Tablet PC and related software. Microsoft’s recognizer documentation lists a Microsoft Korean Handwriting Recognizer among the available recognizers.
The safest repair is to identify which program is requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that program or the originating Windows language component. On a current Windows installation, run DISM followed by System File Checker. Do not download an isolated copy from a random DLL website or copy it into System32.
Modern Windows language installation may restore Korean input features, but it should not be expected to recreate the historical hwxkor.dll filename. If an old program still requests that exact file, the program may depend on a legacy recognizer that is not included in your current Windows release.

What hwxkor.dll belongs to
Microsoft’s Tablet PC documentation identifies a Korean handwriting recognizer. Historical file information associates hwxkor.dll with the internal description HWXKOR - IV - Desktop, published by Microsoft Corporation.
Historical Windows XP System File Checker reports place the file in this tree:
C:WindowsIMEimkr6_1appletshwxkor.dll
That location matters. It suggests a Korean input-recognition component rather than a normal application library. There is no reliable evidence that this file normally belongs in a modern C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 directory.
Some public file listings report version and size information, but those details are not confirmed by a current Microsoft file catalog. Do not use an unverified version number or byte count to choose a replacement.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Microsoft describes handwriting recognition as part of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and related Tablet PC software. Microsoft also documented the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 Recognizer Pack for certain XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 development environments. These are legacy installation routes, not evidence that Windows 10 or Windows 11 normally installs this DLL.
Why the error appears
The likely causes are:
- A legacy Korean handwriting component is missing or damaged.
- Windows protected files or the component store are corrupted.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Language removal, an update, cleanup software, or an incomplete repair removed part of the component.
- An old application has an incorrect or obsolete dependency.
- The disk or filesystem has errors.
- The file exists but is blocked, inaccessible, the wrong architecture, or incompatible with the program loading it.
The exact wording does not identify the cause by itself. A “Bad Image” message means the Windows loader rejected a file or one of its dependencies. It does not prove that the DLL is malware or that Windows itself is damaged.
Step 1: Identify the exact program and path
Before changing Windows files, determine what is requesting hwxkor.dll.
Check when the message appears
Ask these questions:
- Does the message appear during Windows startup?
- Does it occur when opening an old text, language, or Tablet PC application?
- Does it appear only when launching one game or desktop program?
- Did it begin after removing Korean language support?
- Did it follow antivirus activity, a Windows repair, an update, or disk trouble?
If only one old program reports the error, that program is the first repair target. If Windows or an input panel reports it, investigate the Windows language or Tablet PC component.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Record the full path
If an error dialog shows a path, write it down. A historical path under:
C:WindowsIMEimkr6_1applets
supports the Korean recognizer explanation.
A path inside an old program’s own folder suggests that the application is incorrectly bundling or requesting the legacy dependency. A path in a temporary folder, an unrelated game directory, or a user profile deserves extra caution.
Do not assume that a file belongs in System32 because the program says it is missing. System32 does not always mean “64-bit DLL,” particularly across older Windows releases, and placing a 32-bit legacy component in the wrong directory can create another failure.
Check the triggering process
If the message disappears too quickly, open Task Manager and review the Startup apps list for an old input tool or application. You can also use Settings > Apps > Installed apps and sort by installation date or search for the program associated with the error.
Do not delete an entry simply because it mentions an IME or handwriting feature. First identify the executable and its publisher.
Step 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If one application produces the error, repair that application before replacing any Windows file.
Repair from Settings
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application that produces the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The repair option does not erase the application’s data in the same way as a reset. If Repair is unavailable, check the application’s own installer or support documentation.
Repair from Control Panel
For older desktop programs:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If repair does not help, uninstall and reinstall the program from its original installer or the publisher’s official source. This is the definitive fix when the application itself supplied the dependency or has an incorrect reference to a legacy recognizer.

If the program is very old, check whether it supports your version and architecture of Windows. Compatibility mode may help an old application run, but it will not create a missing Microsoft recognizer component.
Step 3: Install the appropriate Korean language features
This step differs substantially between current Windows and Windows XP.
Windows 11 and Windows 10
To install current Korean language support:
- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Time & language > Language & region.
In Windows 10, select Time & Language > Language. - Select Add a language.
- Search for and select Korean.
- Select Next.
- Select the language features you need.
- Select Install.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Microsoft’s Windows language-pack guidance covers the current process.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
This installs modern language features. It should not be described as a guaranteed way to restore the old hwxkor.dll file. If the error remains after Korean is installed, continue with the component-repair steps and investigate the application requesting the file.
Windows XP
On Windows XP, the documented route was:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Regional and Language Options.
- Open the Languages tab.
- Select Install files for East Asian languages.
- Apply the change and provide the Windows XP installation CD or installation files if requested.
- Return to Regional and Language Options.
- Select Languages > Details.
- Add Korean under Text Services and Input Languages.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft’s IME installation documentation describes the older process. On an XP Tablet PC system, use the original Windows media or the applicable Microsoft recognizer package rather than an isolated DLL.
Windows XP is no longer a supported modern platform. If it contains important data, back it up before changing system files or installing legacy components.
Step 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
If Windows reports corruption, or if the file belongs to a Windows component rather than one application, use Microsoft’s repair sequence.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window merely because progress pauses.
- Restart Windows when it finishes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the repair source used by SFC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun System File Checker second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward, then test the application again.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files appear intact. Focus on the triggering application, language component, path, and architecture.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again if necessary, review the SFC result, and inspect the CBS log for the affected component.
- SFC cannot copy or restore
hwxkor.dll: this indicates a Windows File Protection or component problem on the historical system. It does not prove that the file is unnecessary.
Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM instructions provide the supported procedure.
Repeatedly hunting through folders and rerunning SFC/DISM without knowing what changed can make diagnosis slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues and show what it identifies; the repair is performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required.
Do not use a third-party repair tool as a substitute for the original installer when a particular application or legacy Windows component is missing. Reinstalling that program remains the definitive repair for an application-specific dependency.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Step 5: Check antivirus quarantine
A legitimate Microsoft filename can still be copied or abused by malware, so the filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe.
To review recent detections:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to
hwxkor.dll. - Expand a detection to see its original path and action.
Microsoft explains this process in its Protection History guidance.
Only consider restoring a quarantined file when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- The original path matches the expected Korean recognizer location.
- The file has a valid Microsoft digital signature where applicable.
- A current security scan finds no threat.
- The application or Windows component genuinely requires it.
If the file was found in a temporary directory, an unrelated application folder, or a suspicious download location, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can expose the device.
Step 6: Verify the file if it exists
If you locate hwxkor.dll, do not immediately replace or register it.
Check its location
A historical location associated with this component is:
C:WindowsIMEimkr6_1appletshwxkor.dll
A copy beside an unrelated executable is not automatically legitimate. The path must be considered together with the program that loaded it.
Check the digital signature
- Right-click the DLL.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signer.
- Choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A missing signature is not conclusive for every legacy file, but an invalid signature or a publisher that is not Microsoft is a reason not to use the file.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Public metadata describes hwxkor.dll as a 32-bit Win32 DLL, but the complete supported-version history is not established by current Microsoft documentation. Do not substitute a 64-bit DLL for it.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows can still require a 32-bit component. Conversely, moving a 32-bit file into a 64-bit system directory does not make it compatible. Let the original installer place the file in the correct location.

- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program again.
Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions cover the current process.
If the error started immediately after a system change, open Settings > System > Recovery and review the available recovery options. Depending on the Windows version and configuration, System Restore, uninstalling a recent update, or an in-place repair may be appropriate. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain the tradeoffs.
Back up important files before using a recovery feature.
Step 8: Check drivers only when the symptom points to input hardware
A display, touch, or tablet driver is not the normal source of hwxkor.dll. Reinstalling graphics drivers, DirectX, Visual C++ Redistributables, or .NET is not the primary repair for this file.
Use Device Manager only when the broader symptom involves a tablet, touch device, pen, or input hardware:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Human Interface Devices, Keyboards, or Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs a driver.
For a failed update, use the device manufacturer’s official support page or select Uninstall device, restart, and allow Windows to detect it again. Do not remove an unknown device merely because it appears near an input component.
Manually checking many driver versions is useful only when Device Manager identifies a hardware problem. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported outdated drivers; the driver installation is handled by the full version, and using it is optional. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the application or Korean recognizer that actually requests hwxkor.dll.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic DLL fix
Avoid this command:
regsvr32 hwxkor.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the COM DllRegisterServer entry point. A handwriting-recognition or runtime module may not expose that entry point. The likely result is an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found, and the missing file is still not repaired.
Use registration only when Microsoft or the component’s original installer explicitly requires it. A missing or damaged recognizer should be restored through its installer, Windows repair process, or legitimate installation media.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why downloading a replacement DLL is unsafe
There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download for the individual hwxkor.dll file.
Downloading a DLL from an unknown repository can provide:
- Malware disguised under a familiar filename.
- The wrong language build.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- An incompatible version or dependency.
- A file placed in the wrong directory.
- A temporary workaround that hides the original Windows or application problem.
Do not copy a replacement into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder unless the original vendor’s installer specifically requires that destination. Use Windows Update, the original Windows XP or Tablet PC media where applicable, the Microsoft-documented recognizer package for its supported legacy environment, or the affected application’s official installer.
If the error still remains
Collect these details before escalating:
- The exact error wording.
- The full path shown in the message.
- The executable name that triggers it.
- Your Windows version and architecture.
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The result of
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. - The result of
sfc /scannow. - Any antivirus action involving the file.
- Recent language removal, update, repair, or disk failure.
These details distinguish a missing legacy component from a bad image, access failure, wrong architecture, or application compatibility defect.

FAQ
Is hwxkor.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft’s Korean Handwriting Recognizer and has the reported internal description HWXKOR - IV - Desktop. That does not make every copy with this name safe. Verify the path, signature, and security history.
Is `hwxkor.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
The evidence points mainly to Windows XP-era Tablet PC and Korean handwriting-recognition components. Modern Windows provides current Korean language features, but there is no verified evidence that Windows 10 or Windows 11 normally installs this historical filename.
Should I download `hwxkor.dll?
No isolated current Microsoft download has been verified. Restore the originating component through Windows repair, legitimate installation media, or the affected program’s installer.
Do I need Korean handwriting recognition?
If you do not use Korean handwriting input or an old Tablet PC application, the feature may not be relevant to your daily work. However, a Windows corruption report should still be investigated with DISM, SFC, and the original component source rather than ignored indefinitely.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does the error mention a game?
The game or launcher may be loading an old dependency incorrectly. Reinstall or repair that game from its official installer, then check whether the error disappears. A modern game should not normally require a legacy Korean handwriting recognizer.
Will installing Korean language support restore the file?
It may install current Korean input features, but Microsoft does not document it as a guaranteed recreation of the historical hwxkor.dll filename. If the error persists, repair the requesting application or use the applicable legacy Windows media.
Is the “Bad Image” message proof of malware?
No. It means Windows could not load the file or one of its dependencies in the expected format. Check the path, digital signature, antivirus history, architecture, and program that requested it before drawing a conclusion.
