rdpwsx.dll Missing: Repair Windows RDP Components Safely

rdpwsx.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component, not a standalone runtime that you should download from a random DLL website. If Windows says rdpwsx.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows components first rather than copying an old file into System32.

The safest repair path is:

  1. Install pending Windows updates and restart.
  2. Run DISM to repair the Windows component store.
  3. Run System File Checker.
  4. Check Windows Security quarantine history.
  5. Use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall if the problem continues.

What is rdpwsx.dll?

rdpwsx.dll is described internally as the RDP Extension DLL. It is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system and is associated with Remote Desktop and Terminal Services.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Microsoft’s Terminal Services architecture documentation identifies the file as a user-mode protocol extension involved in connection setup, connection, and disconnection. Microsoft historically lists it under the Windows system directory, typically represented as:

%SystemRoot%System32

That does not mean every Windows installation should contain the same file version in the same way. Windows versions, system architecture, servicing state, and file-system redirection all matter.

This file is not:

  • A Visual C++ Redistributable component
  • A DirectX runtime file
  • A .NET assembly
  • A normal application DLL
  • A file that should generally be registered with regsvr32

A program may show the error while starting if it indirectly loads a Windows Remote Desktop component, but that does not prove the program owns the file. The underlying problem is often damaged or missing Windows system data.

Version and location details

The commonly listed file metadata is useful for identifying a historical build, but it is not a universal replacement specification.

Detail Information
File rdpwsx.dll
Description RDP Extension DLL
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Operating-system component Microsoft Windows
Known historical build 64-bit, version 6.0.6001.18000
Approximate historical size 0.11 MB
Historical location %SystemRoot%System32

The 6.0.6001.18000 build belongs to the Vista and Windows Server 2008 era. It should not be copied into Windows 10 or Windows 11 merely because the filename matches. Microsoft update records also show other builds for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, so there is no single rdpwsx.dll version that fits every Windows computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On 64-bit Windows, do not choose a folder based only on the filename. Windows uses file-system redirection for some 32-bit processes, and the correct system location depends on the operating-system architecture and the component being repaired. Windows servicing is safer than manually deciding whether a file belongs in System32 or another directory.

Errors associated with this file

You may see messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because rdpwsx.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because rdpwsx.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting rdpwsx.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Error loading rdpwsx.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “rdpwsx.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These are Windows loader messages. They do not identify the real cause by themselves.

In particular, “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that rdpwsx.dll itself is absent. A dependency required by the DLL may be missing, damaged, or unavailable. The file may also be present but invalid for the current Windows build or architecture.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave protected system files or the component store in an inconsistent state. Start with Windows Update before attempting more invasive recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all applicable updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Try the program or Remote Desktop connection again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install available updates.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Test the action that produced the rdpwsx.dll message.

If Windows Update reports an error, continue with DISM rather than repeatedly checking for updates. Component-store failures can prevent Windows from obtaining or restoring protected files.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC

This is the main repair procedure for a missing or damaged Windows DLL. DISM repairs the Windows image and component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged files with the expected versions.

Do not reverse the order. Run DISM first, then SFC.

Run DISM as administrator

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish.

A successful result says that the operation completed successfully. Do not close the window simply because the progress percentage appears to pause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

Possible results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Restart, run DISM again, and review the CBS log before repeating SFC.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: Restart Windows and confirm that you opened Command Prompt with administrator privileges.

Restart after the scan, even if SFC reports that it repaired files.

When you are hunting through Windows component versions manually and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; the repair is performed by the full version, but it is not required for this Microsoft repair sequence.

If DISM cannot find source files

DISM may report that the source files could not be found. This usually means the local component store cannot provide the files needed for repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use an unrelated DLL download as the source. Microsoft advises using a repair source that matches the same Windows operating-system version. A mismatched source can leave the component store in a worse state or fail to repair it.

After providing a matching repair source, run DISM again and then run:

sfc /scannow

If you cannot supply a matching source, use Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation rather than inserting a historical DLL manually.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows file after a detection, or malware may have modified or replaced it. Do not restore a quarantined file automatically just because its name is rdpwsx.dll.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent actions involving rdpwsx.dll or related Windows components.
  7. Check the reported file location and detection details.

Before restoring anything, verify that the file was located in an expected Windows system directory and that it has a valid Microsoft digital signature. A matching filename alone does not prove that the file is genuine.

Run a full scan:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Select Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.

If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline:

  1. Save your work and close open programs.
  2. Open Windows Security.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Scan options.
  5. Select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan).
  6. Select Scan now.

Windows will restart and scan outside the normal desktop environment. If the file was quarantined, repair Windows with DISM and SFC after the scan instead of relying on a manually restored copy.

Fix 4: Use System Restore if the failure is recent

System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or security event.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter:

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the rdpwsx.dll problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs to review expected changes.
  5. Select Next, then Finish.
  6. Allow Windows to restart and complete the restore.

System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can roll back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. Review the affected-program list before confirming.

After the restore, install current Windows updates and test Remote Desktop or the affected program again.

Fix 5: Reinstall the current Windows version on Windows 11

Supported Windows 11 systems may offer a repair reinstall through Windows Update. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select System.
  4. Select Recovery.
  5. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  6. Select Reinstall now.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  8. Restart if requested and test the affected feature.

If this option is unavailable, use the recovery options provided by your Windows installation. Back up important data before using installation media or any recovery process.

Fix 6: Repair the affected application

If Remote Desktop works normally and only one program reports the error, the application may be damaged or may be loading a dependency incorrectly.

Use the application’s own repair process first:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps.
  2. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Choose Advanced options if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Test the application.
  7. If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
  8. Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the application from its official publisher.

For software distributed through a launcher, use its built-in file verification feature if available. If the application has its own installer repair option, use that rather than downloading rdpwsx.dll.

There is no verified Microsoft redistributable package for rdpwsx.dll. Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears in an error. Those packages address different dependencies unless another diagnostic specifically identifies one of them.

Fix 7: Check Windows features related to Remote Desktop

Windows Features can confirm whether an optional Windows component is disabled, but enabling unrelated features will not normally recreate a damaged protected DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To review optional components:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the available Windows features.
  3. Enable only a feature you specifically need.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart if Windows requests it.

Do not enable random features as a trial. If Remote Desktop is failing because system files are damaged, DISM and SFC are the appropriate repair tools.

For Windows Pro or supported business editions, review Remote Desktop settings:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Remote Desktop.
  4. Confirm whether Remote Desktop is enabled when you need incoming connections.
  5. Confirm that the account is permitted to connect.

On Windows 10, the Remote Desktop page is under Settings > System > Remote Desktop.

Fix 8: Update drivers only when diagnostics point to a driver

A driver update is not the first-line repair for rdpwsx.dll, but a display, network, or remote-session problem may expose a broader system failure. Update drivers only when Device Manager shows an error, the device is malfunctioning, or a recent driver change matches the beginning of the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, and System devices.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. Review the Device status message and Driver tab.
  8. Use Update Driver or install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows.

Do not uninstall a working driver merely because rdpwsx.dll appears in an unrelated error. Record the device name and driver version before changing anything.

When identifying stale drivers across several devices is taking longer than the DLL repair itself, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; installation of drivers is handled by the full version, and a driver update is not a substitute for repairing Windows components.

What not to do

Do not download a random DLL

Third-party DLL download sites may provide malware, an incorrect Windows build, or the wrong architecture. A copied file can also fail because the actual missing item is a dependency or because the component store remains damaged.

The correct official sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, and a matching Windows installation source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy an old build into Windows

The historical 6.0.6001.18000 file is not a universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 replacement. Do not copy Vista, Windows 7, or another computer’s DLL into a current installation.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair command

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that rdpwsx.dll should be manually registered as a COM server.

Running commands such as these is not a substitute for component repair:

regsvr32 rdpwsx.dll

If the command reports that an entry point is missing, that is expected for a DLL that is not designed for that registration process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not trust the filename alone

A file named rdpwsx.dll outside normal Windows system locations should be treated cautiously. Check its location, digital signature, and scan results. If it appears in an application folder, investigate that application rather than assuming the file is an official Windows copy.

When every repair fails

If DISM, SFC, System Restore, security scans, and application repair do not resolve the error, the Windows installation may have broader corruption.

Before escalating:

  1. Back up important personal files.
  2. Record the exact error and when it occurs.
  3. Note whether Remote Desktop itself works.
  4. Review recent updates, drivers, and security detections.
  5. Use supported Windows recovery options or an in-place repair installation where available.

A clean reinstall may be necessary when malware has compromised the system or Windows cannot repair its component store. Use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture.

FAQ

Is rdpwsx.dll a legitimate Windows file?

Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the RDP and Terminal Services user-mode protocol extension. A file with the same name outside an expected Windows location is not automatically trustworthy.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I download rdpwsx.dll manually?

No. Manual downloads can contain malware or the wrong version and architecture. Repair Windows so it restores the correct file for that installation.

Is the file always supposed to be in System32?

It has historically been associated with %SystemRoot%System32, but the correct location depends on the Windows release and architecture. File-system redirection also affects how 32-bit processes view system directories.

Will installing Visual C++ fix this error?

Not normally. rdpwsx.dll is a Windows RDP component, not a Visual C++ runtime file. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC unless another diagnostic identifies a separate runtime dependency.

Does the error prove that the file is missing?

No. “The specified module could not be found” can indicate a missing dependency, corruption, or an incompatible file. Repair the Windows image before assuming that a simple copy operation is enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run regsvr32 rdpwsx.dll?

Generally, no. regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points. It is not a general Windows system-file repair tool.

What if only one game or application shows the message?

If Remote Desktop and other Windows functions work normally, repair or reinstall that application and verify its files through its official launcher. No particular mainstream game was established as the normal owner of rdpwsx.dll.

What is the best first repair?

Install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by sfc /scannow. This allows Windows to restore the correct protected component for the installed operating system instead of forcing an unverified file into a system directory.
