What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
readcd.dll is a third-party application DLL associated with Signalyst software, most strongly with HQPlayer 4 Pro. It is not a Windows system file, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Signalyst HQPlayer installation that originally placed it.
Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. A replacement can have the wrong architecture, be damaged, or belong to a different application build. It can also leave the actual installation problem unresolved.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall HQPlayer
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
An incomplete installation, failed update, interrupted uninstall, or damaged application folder is the most likely cause.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Close HQPlayer and any related Signalyst applications.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for HQPlayer.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the relevant entry.
- Choose Uninstall, then follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Open a browser and go to the official Signalyst Downloads page.
- Download the Windows installer for the HQPlayer edition you use.
- Install it with the vendor’s installer rather than copying individual files.
- Launch HQPlayer again.
If Windows reports that readcd.dll is missing during startup, test the same program that produced the error. A successful repair normally means the application opens without the loader message and the file is restored inside the application’s own installation directory.

A third-party inventory places ReadCD.dll under:
C:Program FilesSignalystHQPlayer 4 Pro
That strongly connects the file with HQPlayer 4 Pro, but it does not prove that every copy came from that exact release. If you are repairing an old HQPlayer 4 installation and the current Signalyst download page does not provide its original installer, contact Signalyst or use an original trusted installer. Do not obtain only the DLL from a mirror.
If uninstalling does not work
Try the following:
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove any remaining HQPlayer entry.
- Check whether the old HQPlayer folder remains.
- If it does, do not delete personal music libraries or configuration files without confirming what they contain.
- Reinstall the correct application version from Signalyst.
If the error began immediately after an update, reinstalling the same application family and matching architecture is more appropriate than installing a system DLL.
Fix 2: Check whether Defender quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Windows Security may quarantine an application file after an update or a change in detection rules.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for
readcd.dll, HQPlayer, or the Signalyst installer. - Open a matching entry and review its path, publisher, and detection details.
Prefer reinstalling HQPlayer from Signalyst instead of restoring a quarantined file. Restore the file only when you can confirm that it came from the trusted original installer and that its location belongs to the expected HQPlayer directory. Microsoft advises caution when restoring quarantined files.
If Defender repeatedly removes the file:
- Run a scan of the complete HQPlayer installer.
- Do not create an antivirus exclusion immediately.
- Confirm that the installer came from Signalyst.
- Contact Signalyst if the file is removed again after a clean installation.
- Review endpoint-security logs if the computer is managed by an organization.
If the error returns after every reinstall, security software may be deleting or blocking the file, or the installer may be failing to write to its destination.
Fix 3: Determine whether a dependency is missing
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that readcd.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load one of the DLLs that readcd.dll needs.

First, check the exact filename in the error dialog. Pay particular attention to names such as:
vcruntime140.dllmsvcp140.dll- Another Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file
If the dialog names a Microsoft runtime:
- Go to Microsoft’s Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
- Choose the package that matches the application architecture.
- Install the official x86 package for a 32-bit HQPlayer application.
- Install the official x64 package for a 64-bit HQPlayer application.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch HQPlayer again.
Microsoft provides the official packages vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe. The Visual C++ Redistributable supplies runtime dependencies. It does not contain or replace readcd.dll.
Do not remove older Visual C++ Redistributables just because you installed a newer one. Microsoft supports side-by-side installations, and another application may depend on an older package.
If the error names only readcd.dll, reinstall HQPlayer first. Installing a runtime cannot be assumed to repair an application-private file.
Fix 4: Verify the application architecture
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A 64-bit Windows installation can run either 32-bit or 64-bit applications. The required DLL architecture follows HQPlayer, not simply the version of Windows installed on the computer.

readcd.dllis either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
To avoid mixing files:
- Remove the damaged HQPlayer installation from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the appropriate installer for your HQPlayer edition and architecture from Signalyst.
- Install the program as a complete package.
- Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit installation, or the reverse.
If you are unsure which installer is correct, check the application’s download description or contact Signalyst. Do not rely on a public DLL index’s architecture listing as an official Signalyst release record.
Fix 5: Update HQPlayer and related drivers
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
If the error began after changing an audio interface, USB device, DAC driver, or other playback hardware, update the affected application and device software from their manufacturers.

- Launch HQPlayer.
You can also select Properties > Driver to review the driver provider and date. Avoid replacing a working driver with an unrelated package merely because the readcd.dll message appeared nearby in time.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers when manually checking several hardware manufacturers is tedious; its free scan identifies possible issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling HQPlayer remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They normally do not recreate a missing third-party HQPlayer DLL, so use them when other Windows applications are also failing or Windows itself appears damaged.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test HQPlayer.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test HQPlayer again. If both commands report no integrity violations but readcd.dll is still missing, return to the HQPlayer reinstall rather than repeating the commands indefinitely.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when repeatedly running SFC and DISM does not show what changed; its free scan identifies reported issues, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is not required, and it does not replace reinstalling the Signalyst application.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore may help if the error appeared immediately after a Windows update, application installation, driver change, or cleanup operation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore reverts system files, settings, and installed programs to an earlier state. It does not normally remove personal files. Afterward, test HQPlayer and reinstall it if its files were not restored.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this error
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that readcd.dll is a COM or ActiveX component that needs registration.
Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 readcd.dll
It may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That does not mean Windows needs another copy of the file. It means registration is not the appropriate operation.
Similarly, do not use Windows Features to look for readcd.dll. Optional Windows components do not establish that this application DLL belongs to Windows.

Common causes of readcd.dll errors
| Likely cause | What usually resolves it |
|---|---|
| HQPlayer was incompletely installed or updated | Reinstall the affected HQPlayer version |
| HQPlayer was removed while another component still expects it | Reinstall or remove the remaining application cleanly |
| Defender quarantined the file | Verify provenance, then reinstall from Signalyst |
| Wrong 32-bit or 64-bit files were combined | Install the matching application package |
| A Visual C++ dependency is missing | Install the official Microsoft runtime named by the error |
| File corruption or disk problems | Reinstall first, then investigate disk health |
| Broader Windows corruption | Run DISM followed by SFC |
| A recent system change caused the failure | Consider System Restore |
What the error messages mean
Common Windows loader variants include:
- “The program can’t start because readcd.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting readcd.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading readcd.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because readcd.dll was not found.”
- “readcd.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are common loader messages reproduced in public file metadata, not confirmed Signalyst-specific support cases. The wording helps classify the failure, but the repair path remains the same: identify the owning application, check dependencies and architecture, and restore the complete installation.

Is readcd.dll part of Windows?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is a third-party application DLL, strongly associated with Signalyst HQPlayer 4 Pro.
Is it the same as readcd.exe?
No. The similarly named readcd.exe command-line utility is associated with CD-recording software. Similar names do not establish a connection between the two files.
Should I copy readcd.dll to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Keep the DLL in the application directory installed by HQPlayer. Copying it into a Windows system folder can create version conflicts and conceal the real problem.
Do I need the 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Use the architecture required by HQPlayer. A 32-bit application needs 32-bit dependencies even on 64-bit Windows.

What if reinstalling HQPlayer does not restore the file?
Check Defender Protection History, confirm that the installer completed successfully, and inspect permissions and endpoint-security logs. For an old HQPlayer 4 installation with no trusted installer available, contact Signalyst.
Could the file be malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Verify the original installation path, publisher, and installer source. If antivirus repeatedly quarantines it, scan the complete installer and contact Signalyst rather than adding an exclusion immediately.
