VOID Interactive said changes made while preparing Ready or Not for consoles were limited to content its first-party platform partners required—but some of those edits also appeared on PC. That cross-platform decision became the center of the 2025 censorship controversy: VOID described the changes as narrow compliance edits, while many players objected to both the changes themselves and their effect on the PC version.
What sparked the Ready or Not censorship controversy?
On July 2, 2025, GameSpot reported that VOID Interactive had explained changes made during the console-port process. The developer said its first-party partners had flagged the changes as required, and that some would also be visible in the PC version. VOID cited console age ratings of ESRB M, PEGI 18, and USK 18, and referred to additional platform content requirements.

The cross-platform effect mattered as much as the content edits. Players who had bought or played the PC version objected that changes associated with console certification were being applied to their version too. Many called the decision censorship or a betrayal; those were players’ interpretations, not VOID’s description of its purpose.
What content did VOID change?
In a later clarification, reported by GameSpot and PC Gamer, VOID identified six targeted PC visual or content changes and shared before-and-after images. Reported examples included adding clothing to previously nude figures, removing post-mortem dismemberment, changing a child NPC’s depiction from convulsing to sleeping, and changing or removing an evidence image and its label.

VOID’s account did not describe a general removal of gore or violent gameplay. The developer said dismemberment of living enemies remained possible, while further dismemberment of dead enemies did not; it characterized the level of dismemberment itself as unchanged when it occurs. The reported changes therefore concerned particular depictions and what could be done to bodies after death, rather than the wholesale removal of violent combat.
PC Gamer reported that VOID said the missions Elephant, Neon Tomb, and Valley of the Dolls remained unchanged. That is the developer’s account as reported by the outlet, not an independent finding about every element of those missions.

How did VOID defend the edits?
As quoted by GameSpot, VOID said it had tried “to only make changes when they are flagged as absolutely required by our first party partners,” and that changes aimed to remain faithful to the game’s original tone. In the later clarification quoted by PC Gamer, the company said it had made changes “only to the letter of the regulations—no further.”
VOID’s position was that the edits were limited to requirements and did not compromise the game’s violence, atmosphere, or creative vision. The reporting establishes the company’s stated rationale, but does not establish that a particular rating board or platform partner required each individual edit. It would therefore be inaccurate to attribute a specific change to ESRB, PEGI, USK, or another organization without evidence tying that edit to that organization.

Why did players reject the explanation?
Many players disputed the distinction between a limited compliance change and censorship. For them, the edits still altered the game’s presentation, and applying them to PC made the console-port process relevant to players who were not buying the console edition. The July clarification did not end negative reactions.
The disagreement was about more than whether the game remained violent. VOID emphasized the scope of the edits and its stated obligations; critics focused on the fact that specific content had changed and that those changes reached PC. Both descriptions can be true: the reported edits were targeted rather than a complete removal of gore, and players could still regard targeted changes as censorship or as a breach of expectations.

Did the controversy affect sales?
PC Gamer reported on July 21, 2025, that VOID CEO Julio Rodriguez said the console edition reached one million units in about 3.6 days, compared with about 36 days for the PC version. These are company figures attributed to Rodriguez through LinkedIn and reported by PC Gamer; the article did not independently audit them. The milestone provides commercial context, but it does not show that the controversy was resolved or that the edits caused the console sales.
