It also has a separate solo or local-co-op climb, but the available critic response is mixed, and the game’s simple pitch does not by itself establish how much long-term variety its loot and customization offer.
What is ReadySet Heroes?
ReadySet Heroes is a multiplayer dungeon crawler and arena brawler from Robot Entertainment. Its defining format puts players through a dungeon at the same time: fight monsters, avoid traps and gather gear before the run gives way to a short contest against the other player or team. PlayStation’s official listing describes it as a dungeon race followed by a winner-take-all brawl, while lead producer Lance Hoke described the sequence as an eight-minute crawl and boss fight followed by a two-minute arena battle in his September 30, 2019 PlayStation Blog guide.
That structure gives each session a clear purpose: improve your character during the crawl, then use what you found in the fight. It is a more immediately understandable hook than a sprawling campaign, and it is aimed at quick competitive play rather than a long narrative adventure.
How does the game play?
The dungeon race and arena brawl
Players explore a dungeon, defeat enemies, avoid traps and collect weapons, armor, spells and other loot. The crawl ends with a boss fight, after which rivals meet in a short arena brawl. Because the loot phase feeds into the fight, the mode links exploration and competition rather than treating them as separate activities.

The format is designed to be easy to explain and quick to start. Whether its randomized loot creates enough meaningful variety across repeated matches is a separate question; the official descriptions establish the systems, but do not quantify their depth or replay value.
Tower Crawl for a longer climb
Hoke also described Tower Crawl, a separate single-player or local co-op mode with 30 increasingly difficult levels and a final boss. It offers a progression-oriented alternative to the head-to-head race, and gives solo players a stated mode of their own rather than requiring a rival for every session.

Is ReadySet Heroes good for solo play or groups?
The strongest fit is a local group that wants a game everyone can understand quickly. Hoke said Robot Entertainment set out to make a game “easy to pick up and play with your family and friends.” The dungeon-to-brawl sequence supports that goal: players gather loot together, then compete over the result.
For solo play, Tower Crawl is the clearest option in the developer’s description. That makes the game more than an online-versus-only concept, but the existence of a 30-level climb is not proof that it will sustain every solo player’s interest. The available evidence does not establish how much the levels or loot vary from run to run.

On PS4, the PlayStation Store lists one to four players. Local play does not require signing in online, according to Hoke’s guide. For a couch group, plan on having compatible controllers available; the sources do not establish that extra controllers are included with the game.

Hoke’s guide describes local Tower Crawl and split-screen play without an online sign-in, alongside online team and free-for-all options. That describes the available modes, not a guarantee that online matchmaking is currently active; online service availability can change.

Metacritic’s PS4 critic page showed a 57 Metascore from six reviews and categorized the reception as “Mixed or Average.” That is a small sample, not a broad consensus across every platform or current player experience. The visible review excerpts point in both directions: one sees a sturdy single-player experience and accessibility for younger family members, while another criticizes the controls and frustrating execution.

The PlayStation Store search snapshot showed 3.58 out of 5 from 1,079 player ratings. That is a changing storefront figure, not a controlled measure of quality. Both figures are useful context, but neither settles whether the game suits a particular group.
Should you play ReadySet Heroes?
Consider it if you want an approachable party game built around quick competitive rounds, especially for local multiplayer. Tower Crawl gives solo players and co-op partners a distinct progression mode, while the central race-and-brawl loop keeps the game’s competitive identity clear.
Be more cautious if you are looking for a deep solo campaign, a proven long-term loot system or dependable online matchmaking today. The official descriptions confirm the modes and platform requirements, but do not demonstrate the depth of repeated play; PS4 online play also depends on PlayStation Plus and service availability. The mixed, six-review critic snapshot reinforces that the execution is not universally praised.
