The Realme GT Neo 5 SE pairs a Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 chip with a 144Hz 1.5K AMOLED display, a 5,500mAh battery and 100W wired charging. That still makes it appealing for gaming and long sessions away from an outlet. But it launched in China in 2023, and in 2026 it is mainly an import or used-phone purchase: firmware, carrier compatibility, battery condition and warranty can matter more than its headline specs.
It makes sense if you can verify the exact model and official firmware, confirm it works with your carrier, and buy it for substantially less than a newer locally supported phone. If you need dependable updates, camera versatility or straightforward US support, choose a newer officially sold model instead.
What the Realme GT Neo 5 SE is
Realme launched the GT Neo 5 SE in China in April 2023 as a lower-cost, performance-focused companion to the GT Neo 5. It is a distinct phone from later Neo models such as the GT Neo6 SE; similar names do not mean shared hardware or software support. Realme identifies units as RMX3700 or RMX3701, so check the model number rather than relying on a seller’s title. Realme’s product page and official specifications document the device.
The starting price widely reported at launch was CNY 1,999, a 2023 China launch price—not a current 2026 offer or a guide to what an import is worth today. Is it still good for gaming?
The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2, built on a 4nm process, was unusually capable for its class. Its octa-core CPU is listed up to approximately 2.91GHz, with an Adreno 725 GPU, LPDDR5X memory and what Realme describes as overclocked UFS 3.1 storage. That combination remains a credible basis for demanding games, multitasking and emulation, subject to compatibility and game settings.
Do not read “144Hz” as a promise that every game renders at 144 frames per second. The display can refresh at up to 144Hz, but apps and games set their own frame-rate limits, and actual refresh behavior can vary. Sustained gaming speed and heat also depend on the title, graphics settings, firmware, ambient temperature and the phone’s condition. Realme’s marketing performance claims are not independent, reproducible game benchmarks, so they should not be treated as a guarantee of a particular frame rate.
For gaming, the strongest case is the blend of a fast chip, high-refresh screen, large battery and high-capacity storage options. The weakest case is buying an aging import at a price close to a newer phone: performance alone cannot compensate for uncertain firmware, support or battery wear.

Display, build and everyday extras
The 6.74-inch AMOLED panel has a 2772 × 1240 resolution, often called 1.5K, and supports 10-bit color. Realme lists up to 1,400 nits peak brightness, 100% DCI-P3 coverage and up to 1,500Hz instantaneous touch sampling. These are manufacturer specifications, not guarantees of a particular brightness in every setting; maximum brightness depends on conditions and display mode.
The phone is about 163.9 × 75.8mm and weighs roughly 193.1–195g depending on finish. Realme also lists dual speakers, Dolby Atmos branding, Hi-Res Audio certification, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, an infrared remote, dual Nano-SIM, GPS and other satellite-navigation systems, and NFC. Battery and 100W charging
The battery is rated at 5,500mAh typical capacity and 5,360mAh minimum capacity. Realme specifies 100W wired SuperVOOC charging and lists a 100W adapter in the China package. Actual charging speed changes with battery level, temperature, charger and cable, software settings and the particular regional configuration; charging also slows as the battery fills. Do not assume a used phone still has its original battery capacity or charging behavior.
Wireless charging is not listed in the official specifications. If the appeal is fast top-ups rather than wireless convenience, the wired charging system is a major advantage—but only if the correct charger and compatible cable are included or available.

Camera quality: a performance phone, not a camera phone
Main and ultrawide cameras
The rear setup consists of a 64MP primary camera, an 8MP ultrawide with a listed 112-degree field of view, and a 2MP microscope camera. The main sensor is the most generally useful of the three. The ultrawide’s lower resolution and the lack of a listed telephoto camera make this a less versatile kit than phones built around stronger secondary cameras. Megapixel counts alone do not establish image quality.
Microscope, selfie and video
The microscope camera is a novelty for close-up subjects rather than a substitute for optical zoom. The front camera is 16MP; Realme lists front video up to 1080p at 30fps. Rear modes listed by Realme include slow motion, time-lapse, night video, HDR video and microscope video. Those mode names do not establish stabilization or image quality. If photography, reliable video stabilization or zoom is a priority, compare actual camera reviews of the alternative phone before buying.
Software, updates and the “global ROM” risk
The GT Neo 5 SE launched with realme UI 4.0 based on Android 13. Realme’s security pages identify both RMX3700 and RMX3701. Its China security-update page places RMX3701 in a monthly-update group and RMX3700 in a quarterly group in the published historical table. That is a support categorization, not a promise of future Android versions or evidence that every region receives the same updates. No specific later Android version should be assumed without an official update record for the exact model and region.
“Global ROM” is not precise enough to assess a listing. It may refer to an official regional firmware, Chinese firmware with Google services added, or an unofficial modification or port. Such changes can affect normal OTA updates, Play Protect certification, banking apps, NFC, Widevine DRM or Android Auto. The label alone does not establish official global support.

Before the return period ends, check the model identifier, software build and region in Settings; establish whether the firmware is official for that identifier; and test OTA updates, Play Protect certification and the apps and services you depend on. Do not flash firmware casually: an incorrect package can cause data loss, missing features, a boot loop or a phone that will not start. Realme’s listed bands include 4G FDD B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B18, B19, B26 and B28A; 4G TDD B34, B38, B39, B40 and B41; and 5G n1, n3, n5, n8, n28A, n40, n41, n77 and n78. For US use in particular, do not infer compatibility from “5G” or a band list. Check the exact RMX model against the carrier’s current requirements and confirm LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE provisioning, device certification or whitelisting, emergency calling and the carrier’s supported 5G mode. Realme notes that actual network use depends on local operator deployment. If reliable calls or emergency access are essential, avoid an import unless the carrier confirms the exact device is supported.
An imported phone may have no practical local manufacturer warranty, and a seller warranty is only as useful as the seller’s return and repair process. Realme’s global support site provides market-specific support information; it does not establish broad US retail availability for this model. What to test when buying used or imported
- Match the model number in Settings to the listing and record the software build and region.
- Ask whether the ROM is official for that model, whether the bootloader has been modified, and whether OTA updates work. Get the answer in writing.
- Install or open Google Play, check Play Protect certification, and test banking, authentication, Android Auto and any DRM services you need.
- Test NFC for your intended use, both SIM slots, calls and VoLTE with your own carrier, plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.
- Test the cameras, speakers, microphones, vibration, fingerprint reader and USB-C port. Inspect the display for burn-in or dead pixels and the battery for swelling or unstable charging.
- Check the IMEI or serial number through Realme’s tool where available, while treating the result as a reference rather than a final warranty decision.
- Keep the listing, seller responses and evidence of faults until the return window has expired.
How it compares with alternatives in 2026
The sensible comparison is about the whole purchase, not a single chipset or advertised charging speed. Realme’s current China store shows newer GT and Neo models, including GT8 Pro, GT8, GT7, GT7 Pro, Neo8, Neo7 Turbo and Neo7 SE. They may offer newer hardware and more remaining support life, but some can still be China-market imports with similar region and warranty questions. Availability and support depend on the market. Should you buy the GT Neo 5 SE?
It can be a good buy if
- You want a gaming-capable phone, a high-refresh AMOLED screen, large battery and very fast wired charging.
- The price is substantially below a newer, officially supported alternative after shipping, taxes and any warranty costs.
- You are comfortable managing an import and have verified the exact model, firmware, carrier compatibility and return policy.
Choose something else if
- You need dependable local carrier support, warranty service or easy repairs.
- Long-term security updates, camera quality, video stabilization or zoom are central priorities.
- The seller cannot identify the model and ROM, or the price is close to a newer officially sold phone.
For an import or used unit, prioritize a documented official firmware, a working return route and successful tests on your own carrier and essential apps. The GT Neo 5 SE’s hardware can still be appealing; whether it is a good 2026 purchase depends on the condition and support of the particular unit.
