REAPER can help you build a career in game audio, but it is a digital audio workstation—not a career path or job title. Game-audio work also involves designing and editing sounds, implementing them in a game engine, testing how they respond to play, and collaborating with a development team. A portfolio that demonstrates those skills matters more than knowing one particular DAW.

What can you do with REAPER?

REAPER is a computer-based application for multitrack audio and MIDI recording, editing, processing, mixing, and mastering. Its developers list sound design and game development among its uses, alongside work in commercial and home studios, broadcast, education, science and research. The official REAPER site listed version 7.82, dated October 4, 2026, when checked; software versions and terms can change.

In game audio, REAPER can be part of the workflow for recording, editing, processing, and organizing assets. It does not, by itself, make those assets interactive in a game. That usually requires implementation and testing in a game engine, sometimes with audio middleware such as Wwise or FMOD.

What jobs are available in game audio?

“Game audio” covers several kinds of work. A sound designer may create and implement effects, using recording, editing, and synthesis. Other roles focus on composing music, building audio technology, recording foley, performing voice work, testing, mixing, producing, or leading an audio team. The mix of responsibilities varies by studio and project.

Role or focus Typical work
Sound designer Create or compile sound assets and, in some roles, implement them in the game.
Audio implementer Set up and test audio behavior in a game engine or middleware workflow.
Audio programmer Build technical systems and tools for game audio; programming is central to this specialization.
Composer Create music for a game.
Foley artist or voice actor Perform sounds or voice material for recording.
Dialogue or effects editor Edit and prepare dialogue or sound-effects material.
Audio mixer, producer, or director Mix audio, coordinate production, or provide audio leadership.
Audio QA tester Check game audio for issues during testing.

These are useful distinctions, not a universal job-title system: smaller teams may combine responsibilities, while larger teams can divide them among specialists. Microsoft’s game-industry career resource describes several of these roles. Berklee also notes that sound designers may work as studio employees or freelance contractors.

What does a game sound designer actually do?

A typical workflow starts with a brief: what should the player hear, and when? The designer may create or source a library of sounds, record effects or foley, then edit and process assets in a DAW such as REAPER. Next, audio is implemented and tested in the game engine. The work may need to change dynamically with player actions rather than play as a fixed recording.

Genre and gameplay shape the sound requirements. A useful asset is not only convincing on its own; it must also work in context, at the right time and level, and alongside other sounds. SAE’s overview of game audio describes this brief-to-library-to-recording-to-DAW-to-engine workflow.

What skills do you need besides a DAW?

Interactive implementation

Learn the basics of interactive audio and how assets move from a DAW into a game. Hands-on experience with middleware such as Wwise or FMOD and an engine such as Unreal or Unity can help you understand implementation. You do not need to present yourself as an expert in every tool; be clear about what you have used and what you can demonstrate.

Technical depth

Some sound-design roles benefit from coding, but not every sound designer is expected to be a programmer. Berklee lists C or C++ among skills relevant to the profession, while Microsoft distinguishes audio programmers as specialists who build audio systems and tools. If you enjoy technical problem-solving, programming can open a more specialized route.

Team practice

Game audio is collaborative. Communication, reliability, deadline awareness, and the ability to work with people in other disciplines matter alongside creative and technical skills. A portfolio project that shows how you handled feedback or worked with a team can make this visible.

How do you prepare for a game-audio career?

  1. Learn REAPER fundamentals. Practice recording, editing, processing, mixing, and exporting audio. The official REAPER user-guide page listed Geoffrey Francis’s guide as updated for version 7.81 and described it as more than 400 pages; check the page for the current edition and access options.
  2. Finish small sound projects. Create a focused set of effects or a sound library, and keep track of the decisions and process behind the work.
  3. Make one example interactive. Put sounds into a game-engine or middleware workflow and show how they respond to player actions. Roblox is one possible creator platform: its Creator Hub audio documentation describes REAPER use for editing audio for Roblox Studio, including trimming, fades, and loops. This is an example workflow, not a claim that all game-audio jobs use Roblox.
  4. Build a concise portfolio. Include a few strong examples and explain what you did—asset creation, editing, implementation, or another contribution. A sound redesign for a game level or video can demonstrate process; a game jam, mod, or small indie project can show collaboration and implementation.
  5. Seek real project experience. Internships, particularly at smaller studios, and networking are options to explore, not guarantees of employment. Look at current job descriptions to see which tools and responsibilities recur for the roles you want.

Do you need a degree to work in game audio?

No degree requirement is established across the field. Berklee says many sound designers earn a bachelor’s degree in audio engineering or a related subject, while also emphasizing the difficulty of landing an entry-level role and the importance of an impressive portfolio. A sample graduate audio-designer job description treats a relevant degree or training as nice to have, not essential. Formal study can provide structure and feedback, but practical skills and work you can show remain important.

Should you aim for studio employment or freelance work?

Both are possible. An in-house studio role can place you on a team working within a shared production process; freelance contracts can involve project-based work, sometimes as a generalist. Neither arrangement is a guaranteed progression. People may specialize in implementation, dialogue or effects editing, composition, mixing, foley, or programming, and some later move into leadership. Audio skills can also transfer to fields such as film, television, or academia.

Compare opportunities by the work itself: asset creation or technical implementation; music or effects and dialogue; studio employment or freelance contracting; and broad generalist duties or a defined specialty. Those distinctions are often more informative than the title alone.

What REAPER can—and cannot—tell you about the job market

REAPER is a capable tool for audio production, but proficiency in it alone does not establish readiness for a game-audio job. Employers and teams may use different tools, so check current postings for the roles and locations you are considering. The available sources do not establish salaries, hiring rates, or regional job growth. SAE reports that global gaming-audio market volume rose 5.4 percent to 40.9 million units in 2024, attributing the figures to Futuresource Consulting; that is market-volume data, not evidence of employment growth or demand for sound designers.
