Rec Room’s Nick Fajt Interview: The Cross-Platform Metaverse Bet, in Retrospect

Nick Fajt argued that a metaverse should bring people together across devices. Rec Room’s 2026 shutdown adds a decisive business lesson to that 2021 vision.

Nick Fajt’s 2021 case for Rec Room was that a social virtual world should work across devices, not require everyone to own a VR headset. That idea helped the platform reach a much broader audience—but Rec Room shut down on June 1, 2026, after the company said it had not found a sustainably profitable business model. The interview is now best read as both a record of an ambitious design thesis and a test of what that thesis could not solve.

What was the Nick Fajt interview?

GamesBeat’s September 19, 2021 interview with Rec Room CEO and co-founder Nick Fajt was published as an edited transcript and updated June 18, 2025. Dean Takahashi asked Fajt about cross-platform play, virtual reality, user-created worlds, creator compensation, safety, scale, AI, interoperability and what “the metaverse” should mean. The GamesBeat interview captures Fajt’s thinking at a particular point in Rec Room’s growth; its platform descriptions and figures are historical, not current product information.

At the time, GamesBeat reported 25 million lifetime users, a $100 million financing round at a $1.25 billion valuation, and a team of roughly 130–140 employees that planned to double. Those are 2021-era figures, not comparable to the company’s later lifetime totals.

What did Fajt mean by “the metaverse”?

Fajt described the metaverse as an evolution of the internet toward experiences that are more physical, three-dimensional and real-time. He did not argue that attractive 3D graphics alone made a metaverse. In his framing, a useful shared world also needs rules for identity, objects, creators, commerce, moderation and participation.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

He said Rec Room did not use the word “metaverse” often because it could confuse more than clarify. His practical emphasis was building a fun, welcoming social platform, not claiming Rec Room was the entire metaverse. That distinction matters: “metaverse” remains a contested label, and a social VR app, a cross-platform game, a user-generated-content platform and an interoperable network of worlds are not automatically the same thing.

Why was cross-platform access central to Rec Room’s pitch?

Fajt’s central argument was that the social world should be the constant while a user’s device acts as a window into it. Friends want to spend time together, he argued, rather than connect through a particular piece of hardware. He compared this to the internet: people generally do not think of a separate “mobile internet” and “desktop internet” when they communicate.

  • VR: A headset can provide stronger presence and immersion, but it brings hardware, space and setup requirements that make it less convenient and less ubiquitous.
  • Mobile: A phone is easier to reach in everyday situations, but its screen and touch controls cannot reproduce the same sense of embodied presence.
  • Shared-world strategy: Supporting both can let friends meet without requiring identical devices, widening the potential audience and giving users more than one way to participate.

Rec Room began as a VR-focused social experience in 2016 and expanded to consoles, PC and mobile. Fajt later described that expansion not as abandoning VR, but as preserving a VR-centered experience while making it available to more people; the Acquired discussion with Fajt provides that additional context. In 2021, GamesBeat listed iOS, Xbox, PlayStation, Oculus and Steam among the platforms. That list describes the service then; Rec Room is no longer playable.

Why “radically cross-platform” meant more than porting the app

Making software run on several systems is not the same as making it feel native to each one. Rec Room’s stated standard, described in PocketGamer.biz coverage, was that players should feel the experience had been designed for the platform they were using.

That means adapting controls, interfaces, performance, comfort, rendering and social features to different hardware while preserving a recognizable shared world. A headset, controller and touchscreen offer different capabilities. If a design simply targets the least capable device, it can dilute the more immersive one; if it assumes the most capable device, it can exclude users elsewhere. Cross-play therefore creates a continuing design and engineering challenge, not just a distribution checkbox.

What made Rec Room more than a collection of games?

Rec Room’s proposition joined player-created rooms and inventions with social hangouts, activities, events and performances. Fajt’s point was that rooms did not have to be conventional videogames: they could become places where a community met or made its own culture. The company provided creative tools and a platform; players supplied experiences the company itself might not have designed.

This model can generate more variety than a studio could produce alone and give creators a reason to build an identity within the community. Sequoia’s profile of Fajt and Rec Room likewise described the move from a VR experience toward a broader shared world, rather than separate VR and flat-screen products. But openness also multiplies the work of reviewing content, maintaining quality and addressing copyright, impersonation, scams and exploitative design.

How did Rec Room approach creator compensation?

In the 2021 interview, Fajt said creators had initially been rewarded with in-game currency and that Rec Room was working toward broader real-world compensation. Historically, its Community Commerce system let players use tokens for player-created inventions and room keys. Eligible partnered creators could exchange earned tokens for money; the program page listed $150 for every 250,000 tokens. That is a historical payout rate, not an available earning opportunity today.

Creator income depended on platform rules and continued service operation. During the shutdown wind-down, Rec Room stopped new monetized user content, ended creator token earnings after May 18, 2026, and terminated the Creator Payment Program. Its official shutdown announcement also described limited data-export options, but creators did not receive working copies of their rooms. A digital economy can reward participation while a service exists; it does not by itself guarantee that creations or earnings will remain usable when the service ends.

What did Fajt say about moderation and AI?

Fajt treated trust and safety as a defining platform problem. His proposed mix included a code of conduct, player tools to block, mute and report others, human moderators, and automation or machine-learning systems to help scale review. He expected AI to assist moderation, not to eliminate the need for human judgment.

  • More open creation expands the range of experiences and voices, but also the amount of content that needs oversight.
  • More social interaction creates more opportunities for harassment, abuse, scams and inappropriate behavior.
  • Automated systems can help prioritize and process cases, but context-sensitive decisions remain difficult to reduce to a rule.
  • Community moderation can extend capacity, while raising questions about consistency and enforcement.

The interview records an operator’s expectation about how moderation might scale; it does not establish that AI solved Rec Room’s safety challenges or demonstrate how well any system performed.

What did the interview say about scale?

Fajt said in 2021 that a single Rec Room instance held roughly 40 people, while the company was exploring replicated stages that could serve audiences in the tens of thousands. He discussed the possibility of large festivals and sporting events that would exceed one room’s capacity. These were plans and expectations voiced in the interview, not evidence that those audience sizes became a current capability. With the service closed, there is no present Rec Room room capacity or live-event offering.

Was Rec Room building an open metaverse?

Not simply by supporting multiple devices. Cross-platform means an application is accessible across different devices or operating systems. Interoperability generally means identity, assets, data or experiences can move between separately operated platforms. Fajt acknowledged the potential value of that portability while discussing its technical, economic and governance difficulties.

Rec Room’s availability on VR, mobile, consoles and PC made it cross-platform; that fact alone did not make its avatars or objects portable to other virtual worlds. The harder questions include who controls an asset, how another world interprets it, which rules apply and who handles safety or disputes across services.

What did Rec Room’s 2026 shutdown change?

Rec Room announced that its platform, Rec Room Studio, applications, Rec.net and related services would shut down on June 1, 2026, at noon Pacific Time. As of August 18, 2026, players can no longer log in or play. The company said it had not found a sustainably profitable business model, citing a difficult VR market and broader headwinds in gaming.

In its shutdown announcement, Rec Room reported more than 150 million players and creators over the platform’s lifetime, more than 500 million friendships, and roughly 68,000 cumulative years spent on the service. These lifetime figures measure different things from the 25 million users reported in 2021. They show that Rec Room reached substantial scale; they do not contradict the company’s explanation that it had not achieved sustainable profitability.

What Rec Room’s story says about the metaverse thesis

Rec Room demonstrated that a social, creator-driven virtual world could reach people through more than VR and support a very large community. The shutdown shows the limit of that achievement: according to the company, participation and growth did not translate into a sustainably profitable business. This is an inference from its closure explanation and lifetime figures, not a claim Fajt made in the 2021 interview.

The interview’s most durable idea may be that a virtual world is not just a visual environment. It is also a social and technical system: people need ways to join from different devices, make things, earn rewards, resolve conflicts and trust the platform to keep running. Rec Room made the access and community case compelling, but its closure underscores that creator incentives, governance and service durability are part of the product—not problems that scale alone can settle.
