recpage.dll errors usually point to ABBYY FineReader, not Windows. Before replacing anything, identify which ABBYY product is affected and when the error appears.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Record these details before changing the installation:
- Product: FineReader PDF, FineReader Engine, FlexiCapture, or another ABBYY-based application.
- Timing: during installation, when launching the program, during recognition, or during export.
- Exact message: especially whether it says “specified module could not be found.”
- Windows architecture: check Settings > System > About > System type.
- File path: note the full path shown in the error.
- Security history: check whether antivirus software quarantined an ABBYY file.
The repair depends on the timing. A FineReader PDF 15 installation error is commonly caused by a missing Microsoft Visual C++ prerequisite. A later failure in an existing installation is more likely to require ABBYY repair or reinstallation.
What recpage.dll is
recpage.dll is a genuine ABBYY recognition component used for document analysis and OCR. ABBYY lists it among the system modules supplied with FineReader Engine. Related ABBYY products, including FineReader PDF and some FlexiCapture installations, may also use it.

It is not a normal Windows component. You should not expect to find it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64, and copying it into either folder is not a proper repair.
The exact installation folder depends on the ABBYY product and its architecture. A FineReader PDF 15 installation may use a path under:
C:Program Files (x86)ABBYY FineReader 15
That path indicates a 32-bit application installation. It does not mean the surrounding Windows installation is 32-bit.
Fix 1: Install the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime

The specified module could not be found
The message can mean that Windows cannot load a dependency required by RecPage.dll. It does not necessarily prove that the named file itself is missing.
Choose the correct packages
Use Microsoft’s official latest supported Visual C++ downloads.
Use:
- x86 for a 32-bit ABBYY application.
- x64 as well when Windows is 64-bit and the ABBYY product needs 64-bit components.
For the documented FineReader PDF 15 case:
- On 32-bit Windows, install the x86 package.
- On 64-bit Windows, install both x86 and x64 packages.
The x86 package is still required for a 32-bit FineReader installation on 64-bit Windows. Installing only x64 will not satisfy that application.

Install or repair the runtime
- Close the ABBYY installer and any running ABBYY programs.
- Download the required package from Microsoft.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- If the installer offers Repair, choose it. Otherwise choose Install.
- Repeat for the x64 package if you are using 64-bit Windows.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Right-click the ABBYY setup program and select Run as administrator.
- Run the installation again.

If the official distribution contains those files, you can run the appropriate package from there instead of downloading it separately.
How to tell whether this worked
The installer should pass the point where it previously reported the RecPage.dll error. If FineReader was already installed, open it and perform a small recognition task.
If the same error remains, do not copy a replacement DLL into the ABBYY folder yet. Continue with the product repair steps below.
Fix 2: Repair the ABBYY installation
Use this path when FineReader was working previously, when cleanup software removed files, or when the error appears while launching the installed program.

- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Search for the exact ABBYY product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, depending on what the installer provides.
- Allow the repair to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the ABBYY application and test document recognition.
If there is no repair option, use the official ABBYY distribution kit for the same product and edition. Do not mix files from FineReader PDF, FineReader Engine, and FlexiCapture.
If repair is unavailable
- Confirm that you have the original installer or official distribution kit.
- Back up any application settings or activation information required by your ABBYY edition.
- Uninstall the exact ABBYY product from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Follow ABBY’s removal instructions if the product asks you to remove remaining program folders.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer as administrator.
- Install the required Visual C++ packages if setup requests them.
- Reactivate the product if required.
- Test recognition before restoring optional extensions or integrations.
A complete reinstall is safer than downloading only recpage.dll. The installer supplies the matching DLLs, dependent files, configuration, and product components together.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine application files. This is a possibility, not proof that recpage.dll was malicious or that a particular antivirus product falsely detected it.
- Open Windows Security or your installed security application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or the equivalent section.
- Search for
recpage.dlland the ABBYY installation path. - Check the detection details and original location.
- Restore the file only if the installation is confirmed to come from an official ABBYY distribution and the security product allows you to verify it.
- If you cannot verify the file, leave it quarantined.
- Repair or reinstall ABBYY from its official distribution instead.
- Run a security scan after the reinstall.
Do not disable antivirus protection permanently to force a DLL into place. If the file is repeatedly removed after a clean official installation, save the detection name and contact ABBYY or the security vendor.

Fix 4: Update FlexiCapture when recognition crashes
A crash is different from a missing-DLL message. If FlexiCapture fails during recognition or export with an access-violation error referring to RecPage.dll, update the affected FlexiCapture installation.
ABBYY documents a RecPage.dll access-violation issue in FlexiCapture 12 that was fixed after build 12.0.3.2634.
Check the installed build:
- Open FlexiCapture Administration or the affected station application.
- Open Help > About, if available.
- Record the product name and build.
- Compare it with the update level supplied for your licensed ABBYY distribution.
- Apply the appropriate ABBYY update to the server, stations, and related components as instructed by the product documentation.
- Restart the affected services and computers.
- Repeat the recognition or export that previously crashed.
Do not use a standalone recpage.dll from another FlexiCapture computer. Different builds can require different companion files.
Fix 5: Check architecture and installation paths
Architecture mismatches are a common reason a DLL appears present but still cannot load.
A 32-bit application requires 32-bit dependencies. On 64-bit Windows, that means the x86 Visual C++ package is still necessary. A 64-bit package cannot substitute for it.
Check the application path:
C:Program Files (x86)usually indicates a 32-bit application.C:Program Filescommonly contains 64-bit applications, although the folder alone is not absolute proof.- ABBYY Engine distributions can contain separate 32-bit and 64-bit folders.
Never replace a 32-bit ABBYY component with a 64-bit DLL, or the reverse. If the error names a different missing DLL, troubleshoot that dependency separately rather than assuming recpage.dll is responsible.
Fix 6: Do not register recpage.dll with regsvr32
Do not use this as a routine repair:
regsvr32 RecPage.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the registration interface expected by Windows. ABBYY documents recpage.dll as an analysis and recognition module, not as an ordinary COM component. Registering it normally does not restore FineReader recognition or solve a missing dependency.
If you already tried the command and received an error, undoing the command is not necessary. Proceed with the Visual C++ and ABBYY repair steps instead.

Fix 7: Check Windows components only as a fallback
recpage.dll is supplied by ABBYY, so System File Checker is not the primary way to restore it. SFC cannot replace a third-party application file with the correct ABBYY version.
Use Windows repair commands only when Windows itself is showing other signs of corruption, such as damaged system components, repeated servicing failures, or unrelated built-in applications failing.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test FineReader again.
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker guidance.
If Windows reports that it repaired files but FineReader still reports recpage.dll, return to the ABBYY repair or reinstall step. The Windows scan did not replace the application component.

Graphics or device-driver work is not the normal solution for a missing recpage.dll during FineReader setup. Consider drivers only if recognition causes display corruption, device failures, system crashes, or a separate driver error.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the reported problem.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Note the provider and driver details.
- Use Windows Update or the device manufacturer’s official support channel for the correct driver.
- Restart Windows and retest FineReader.
Avoid changing drivers merely because the DLL error mentions recognition. If the application still fails after a driver update, repair ABBYY rather than continuing to replace unrelated components.

Why DLL download sites are the wrong fix
Do not download recpage.dll from a random DLL website or copy it from another computer. That file may have:
- The wrong architecture.
- An incompatible ABBYY build.
- Missing dependent files.
- Altered or malicious contents.
- A different licensing or installation context.
Even when the copied file has the right name, Windows may still report that the specified module cannot be found because a dependency is absent. The copy also leaves the original installer problem unresolved.

Is recpage.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an ABBYY recognition module. It should not normally be restored to System32 or SysWOW64.

Is recpage.dll legitimate?
Yes, when it is part of a genuine ABBYY installation. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is authentic, so verify the installation source and path.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file is visible?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL. This is why installing the correct Visual C++ runtime can fix the error even when recpage.dll is present.
Should I install x86 or x64 Visual C++?
Match the application. FineReader PDF 15’s documented path is under Program Files (x86), so install x86. On 64-bit Windows, install x64 as well when the ABBYY instructions call for both.
Will regsvr32 recpage.dll fix the error?
Normally no. It is an ABBYY recognition module, not a DLL that should ordinarily be registered with regsvr32.
Is SFC useful?
Only as a fallback for suspected Windows corruption. It is not the primary repair for a missing or damaged ABBYY file.
What if reinstalling FineReader does not help?
Record the exact product and build, Windows version, full error text, file path, architecture, installer logs, antivirus history, and whether the failure occurs during installation, launch, recognition, or export. Those details distinguish a missing runtime from a damaged ABBYY installation, a quarantine event, or a product-specific crash.
Is Icr.RecPage.dll the same file?
No. ABBYY lists Icr.RecPage.dll separately for handprinted-text recognition. Do not substitute it for recpage.dll.
What is the safest repair order?
Install or repair the correct Visual C++ runtime first for an installation error. Then repair or reinstall the exact ABBYY product, check antivirus quarantine, update FlexiCapture if the symptom is a documented crash, and use DISM/SFC only when there is independent evidence of Windows corruption.
