What is Fear of the Dark?
Fear of the Dark is a mode within Red Dead Online, the online component of Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.13 notes, dated October 29, 2019, list it as a new Showdown Mode. The available official record supports an original introduction in 2019, not a new announcement in 2026. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.25 notes, dated July 13, 2021, later mention a defect fix for Showdown Mode – Fear of the Dark. That confirms the mode remained part of the documented game systems, but it does not show that it was continuously featured in a playlist. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.25 notes document the later defect reference.

When has it appeared in a rotation?
Fear of the Dark has appeared in Halloween-themed Featured Series schedules. The official Red Dead Redemption 2 Steam news archive lists “Halloween Series – Fear of the Dark” for October 7–13, 2025, and “Hardcore Halloween Series – Fear of the Dark” for October 28–November 3, 2025. The October schedule also associated the series with 2X RDO$ and XP through November 3.
Those are historical rotation dates and rewards, not evidence that the mode or a bonus is live now. Check current official game news for the active schedule before planning to play.

What do you need to play it?
Because Fear of the Dark is part of Red Dead Online rather than a separately identified release, access is through the online mode in Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar’s update notes do not identify a standalone Fear of the Dark game or a separate expansion.
