How Red Dead Redemption 2 runs on each console
RDR2 runs on PS5 and Xbox Series X as the older console release, not as a native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition. Rockstar said the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions would be playable on the new consoles through backward compatibility in its backward-compatibility announcement. The PlayStation Store likewise identifies the available game as a PS4 version, marks it PS4 Pro Enhanced, and says it is playable on PS5; it notes that some PS4 features may be absent. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.25 notes, last updated January 9, 2025, list PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia rather than PS5 or Xbox Series editions. That reflects the game’s release lineage; it does not rule out a future update.

The resolution and performance figures come from a 2020 technical comparison by ElAnalistaDeBits, which reports the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X modes inherited by PS5 and Series X. These are that comparison’s findings, not guarantees for every scene or setup. Frame rate and frame pacing are related but distinct: the reported 30 fps cap describes how many frames the game outputs, while frame pacing concerns how evenly those frames arrive. The comparison observed minor irregularities on Series X despite the same 30 fps cap.

Which console should you choose for RDR2?
- Choose Xbox Series X if resolution is your priority. The cited comparison reports 3840×2160 for the Xbox One X/Series X version, versus up to 1920×2160 with checkerboard rendering for PS4 Pro/PS5.
- Choose PS5 if you value the cited frame-pacing result. That comparison described PS5 as steadier at 30 fps, though this is a third-party observation rather than a universal guarantee.
- Do not choose either expecting 60 fps. The cited comparison reports both versions at 30 fps.
If you are buying the game for one of these consoles, the relevant editions are the PS4 and Xbox One releases; they run on the newer systems through backward compatibility.
