Yes—most Nintendo DS and DSi game cards work on Nintendo 3DS and 2DS family systems. The main exception is software that requires the Nintendo DS’s GBA (AGB) Game Pak slot or an accessory inserted into it. DS and DSi games run in 2D on these systems; they do not gain stereoscopic 3D.
Which DS games work on 3DS and 2DS?
Nintendo says all DS games are compatible with 3DS-family systems except a few that require the AGB slot; its UK support page describes the library as “most” DS games, and Nintendo’s 2DS page says “almost all” existing DS and DSi games can be played. This applies to 2DS as well as 3DS: the 2DS is part of the 3DS family and plays most DS and DSi cards. Keep the formats separate, though. Why do some DS games not work?
GBA-slot games and accessories
DS and DS Lite systems have a slot for Game Boy Advance Game Paks, also called the AGB slot. 3DS and 2DS systems do not. A DS game that needs a GBA cartridge or an accessory fitted into that slot may therefore fail to run, or may run without the feature that depends on the missing hardware. Nintendo’s DSi compatibility guidance names Guitar Hero On Tour and Guitar Hero Decades as examples of games that are unplayable on DSi, and describes other games with unavailable features. Region and imported cards
Check the exact game’s format and region before buying an import. Nintendo says 3DS-family systems are region locked, and its UK DS compatibility guidance cautions that some DSi games bought outside the PAL region may not play on a PAL 3DS. Do not turn that into a blanket claim that every older DS card is region locked: the cited guidance specifically identifies the 3DS system’s region lock and a caveat for some non-PAL DSi games. Other cartridge or system problems
If a game that should be compatible does not start, first check whether it requires a GBA-slot accessory or cartridge feature, then confirm the exact game region and whether it is DS, DSi, or 3DS software. The official compatibility statements establish broad support and named caveats; they do not provide a complete title-by-title diagnosis for every failure. A resolution setting will not make an otherwise incompatible card work.
Do DS games display in 3D on a 3DS?
No. DS and DSi software does not display in stereoscopic 3D, even when played on 3DS hardware. As Nintendo puts it, “Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games will not display in 3D.” Nintendo Support (Americas).
How to play a DS game at its original resolution
By default, DS and DSi titles are expanded to fill more of the 3DS-family screen. To use the original resolution, hold START or SELECT while launching the game, choose OPEN, and continue holding the button as the game starts. What happens to wireless features in DS mode?
While DS or DSi software is running, the 3DS HOME Menu, StreetPass, and SpotPass are unavailable. Nintendo says wireless-enabled DS games can connect with players using DS, DSi, DSi XL, or 3DS systems. That compatibility statement concerns system support; it does not confirm that any particular historical online service or server is still operating today.
