Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 if you want frontier immersion
Red Dead Redemption 2 makes most sense if the appeal is not simply having a large map, but spending unhurried time in a western world and caring about the gang at its center. Hunting, camp life and exploration give you reasons to step away from the main plot. The PlayStation Store describes the story as taking place in 1899 and identifies Arthur Morgan as its protagonist. Pick it if you enjoy inhabiting a setting between major story beats. If you want frequent build changes or a consistently brisk action pace, that same deliberate approach may be a drawback.

Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want Night City and build-driven action
Cyberpunk 2077 is the better match if a futuristic city and shaping V’s combat approach matter more to you than a western’s slower, more directed journey. The game’s progression systems received significant changes in Update 2.0: CD PROJEKT RED’s September 21, 2023 announcement describes changes to perk trees, cyberware, police behavior, enemy AI, traffic and vehicle combat. That update is evidence of a substantial post-launch change, not a statement that it is the latest patch. Treat it as context for the game’s systems rather than a complete guide to its current state.

Which should you play first?
- Start with Red Dead Redemption 2 if you want a western narrative, an outlaw-gang story and small frontier activities between missions.
- Start with Cyberpunk 2077 if Night City and the freedom to shape combat progression are the bigger draw.
- If both sound equally appealing, decide by pace: choose the slower western journey or the more action-oriented city adventure.

Check platform and edition before buying
Store listings differ by region and can change. The US PlayStation Store page lists Red Dead Redemption 2 as a PS4 product, gives October 26, 2018 as its release date, and notes PS5 play subject to compatibility conditions. Rockstar’s page also exposes a PC listing. CD PROJEKT RED’s US purchase page shows PC, Xbox and PS4 selections but contains legacy wording, so these pages do not establish a complete current platform matrix. For Cyberpunk 2077, check whether the edition includes Phantom Liberty; buying the expansion separately requires the base game. PC players should consult current system requirements for their platform and version. The Update 2.0 announcement said an SSD became a requirement in its 2023 notice, which should not substitute for checking current requirements.
