Redfall is more accommodating now than it was at launch, but its final update did not turn it into a consistently strong shooter. Redfall is an open-world first-person shooter set in Redfall, Massachusetts, developed by Arkane Austin and published by Bethesda Softworks. You can play alone or in co-op, choosing from four heroes: Layla Ellison, Jacob Boyer, Remi de la Rosa, and Devinder Crousley. Is Redfall better after the final update?
Yes, in specific ways—but the patch did not resolve every issue. Bethesda released Update 4, version 1.451.3.0, on May 30, 2024. It is identified in the official material as the game’s final update, so this review concerns the final available version, not the launch build or a game still receiving updates. Bethesda’s Update 4 notes describe these key changes:
- Offline solo play and pausing: You can start a solo session offline or continue solo if your connection drops, and the update added single-player pausing.
- Community Standing: Actions such as opening safehouses, completing safehouse missions, rescuing civilians, and killing Underbosses contribute to a progression system. Its skill tree has six ranks and 39 permanent rewards.
- Elder Nests: The update added boss-focused nest challenges.
- Neighborhood progression: The system was reworked, giving neighborhoods a revised progression structure.
The changes make solo play less dependent on a live connection and give players more progression to pursue. They do not, by themselves, establish that the game’s central combat or enemy behavior became compelling. In an April 11, 2026 retrospective, PC Gamer contributor Rick Lane credited Update 1.4 with improvements but said problems with shooting and enemy AI remained. Can you play Redfall offline?
Solo, yes; co-op, no. Update 4 allows an offline solo session and lets a solo player continue if internet access is lost. Co-op still requires a persistent internet connection, according to Bethesda Support. If a co-op host disconnects, Bethesda’s update notes say the host returns to a solo offline session; that does not mean the co-op session itself can continue offline.
Does Redfall still have co-op?
Yes. Co-op remains part of the game, and the Xbox listing describes co-op features, but all co-op players need persistent online access. The offline change applies to solo play, not to a fully offline multiplayer mode. Check the Xbox Series X|S listing for platform-specific storefront details.

Is Redfall worth playing now?
Consider it if you want to explore a vampire-occupied Massachusetts setting, prefer playing solo, and are curious about a game whose final update added useful quality-of-life and progression changes. The case is weaker if you expect polished shooting and consistently convincing enemy AI, or if you need co-op that works without a persistent connection. The available evidence supports a qualified verdict: Update 4 improved the experience in identifiable ways, but it did not erase the criticisms that continue to shape the game’s reception.
